Movies 51 - Rise of the Frozen Joker: Chapter II: Dark Fate

Dunkirk wasn't as good as everyone thinks it was. Just because Nolan makes a movie doesn't automatically mean it's a classic.

Agreed. It was an art film and was a good art film but did not work for me as a WWII story at all.

An arty WWII film that worked for me (ymmv) was The Thin Red Line.

This makes me want to watch it. I've soured on Nolan since DK but maybe he's still got it.

I liked Dark Knight as it really stuck to the themes and some plot points in The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke. The third one was, ugh.

But yeah, Dunkirk viewed as more of an art film really works imo.

"This is my most favorite book of all time, and yet I have not read it. How is such a thing possible, you ask?"

You could do PB over if you did it as the full story, but 95% of people would hate it. For those who haven't read the book my advice is read it. My only hint is the movie isn't what the book is about. In fact the single most important theme of the book isn't in the movie at all, nor are three of its most important characters. Four, now that I think of it.

PB is not a story within a story (the movie). It is a story within a story within a story within a story. They could try to do that, but it would require genius direction, which is rare, and genius writing and Goldman's dead. And to what end? The book is already perfect and it is inaccessible to a mass audience. The movie is already perfect for what it is and accessible to everyone.

Leave it alone.

Or make Buttercup a Honduran illegal immigrant and cause a civil war. :p

Nolan will never do better than Following and Memento, just as Welles never did better than Citizen Kane and the Lady from Shanghai (fun fact: Welles did not direct the Third Man even though it feels like he did). With 90% of great directors the more money you give them the more gunk collects around the beauty and wit.

IIRC The Third Man hit its 70th Anniversary the other day.

Time for my annual viewing. Every time it gets better. I'm about ready to unseat Casablanca as my favorite movie.

Memento was awesome. IIRC, the only movie I haven't liked that was by Nolan was Dunkirk.

And saw Third Man this week. I didn't care for it, really. I was FAR from hating it, just wasn't my flavor.

I thought you flyovers were supposed to have souls close to the soil or some f-cking thing. How the f-ck can anybody not like PB? Srsly? That's like hating A Christmas Story.

I'm from flyover and I like Princess Bride!

I already know you have a soul, Miss. T. I'm worried about your boyz over there. They are messed up from all the cows and boredom or something.

A Christmas Story sucks balls too. Princess Bride had moments.

Christmas Story was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. And it has to be genetic, because my dad hates it too

Shaking my head...

Benito stared after him. "What can be the matter with the fellow?" he wondered, and, shaking his head, decided that the story about the alcohol having been put into the poor chap's blood-surrogate must be true. "Touched his brain, I suppose."

He put away the soma bottle, and taking out a packet of sex-hormone chewing-gum, stuffed a plug into his cheek and walked slowly away towards the hangars, ruminating.

People who hate those movies should not have children. They aren't capable of love.

Honestly, I get it if you’re 40-60+. It’s hardcore kitsch. I normally like kitsch. But Christmas story just never resonated. At all.
