Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Citizen Kane, it's a technical masterpiece and all, but I struggled to stay awake throughout the show. Yes, old movies have a slower, quieter pace, which I can usually handle just fine. CK just lost me.

I have this problem with The Magnificent Ambersons and also the Seven Samurai.

But I love CK.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

You'd be surprised at the movies I haven't seen, given the volume of movies I have seen.

Volunteering the obvious ones:

Gone With The Wind
Titanic
Schindler's List (on purpose)
Casablanca
Citizen Kane

That includes my favorite 1.5 movies: Casablanca and the first half of Gone with the Wind. I believe you are missing out.

My mother has been bothering me about this one recently. "Very long wait" on Netflix, though.

Why haven't you watched Schindler's List?

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I haven't watched Gone With the Wind either. I had it at home via Netflix, was going to pop it in, and watch with the wife, and she said, "you know, you're going to hate this movie, right?" Then she convinced me to not even bother....and I sent it back. :p

Subject matter. I don't need to see it. Same with a movie like "Passion Of The Christ."

It's more about his internal struggles. I thought it was extremely overrated, but it's not Shoah if that's what you're thinking.

Your wife knows you better than I do, but I defy anybody not to love the first 120 minutes of GwtW. The last half is, I'll admit, just a pot boiler.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Titanic would have been better if they cut out the sub-plot with modern day old Rose and the hunt for that blue trinket, which I estimate dragged the film out 30-45 minutes longer than necessary, while adding virtually nothing to the main story.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Schindler's List and The Passion are both awesome because of the detail work put into them. Sure The Passion changes the story to make the Romans look good and Schindler's List shines over the fact that there were others doing similar things trying to save people the fact is Gibson and Spielberg made these true passion projects and everything you see serves a purpose. I mean the shower scene in SL alone was disturbing but it was shot so perfectly (not to mention in black and white) so it looked like it a flipping documentary. Titanic could have been like that without the stupidity of the love story.

They are hard to watch and I have watched each only once but they are both brilliant. It is too bad Gibson went schizo because he made some amazing movies.

On another topic I just read an article about American History X and how the director disavowed it when he edited it and didnt see it until 2007. Ed Norton made the final edit. Also the director did not want Norton in the movie but was pretty much forced to have him in it. He took out full page ads in 40 newspapers trashing the movie when it came out.

I agree but see why they did it. IMHO they needed a hook to allow us to jump back to the past while already knowing exactly what happened. That was made clear pretty early on but they still managed to drag it out. That plus chicks to love sappy tragic love stories so that played to a big part of the audience.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I'm sure they don't regret that sappy love story for a second. That love story made them millions upon millions of dollars when every chick between the ages of 15 and 30 saw the movie 8 times in the theater.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Love interest and violence is how you pack the dullards into the theater. Studios make enough money from them that they can do a few money-losing quality movies. Until we figure out how to make people smarter, that's just the rules of the road.

Essentially, smart people live off the economic surplus created from the bulk purchasing and labor of stupid people. Twas ever thus. And we don't even have to pretend to be priests anymore.

That was true in the 80s and 90s. I would say films that are obvious pre-planned franchises with never-ending sequels have become the new way to get us schlubs to fork over $13 for an evening show.

It's amazing what gets a sequel these days...

Grown-ups 2 was the last straw for me.

I didn't see it, obviously, but that was the one that made me say enough is enough with every farking dumbass "comedy" getting sequels.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

This is why I generally watch indie movies now. A majority of the crap that Hollywood puts out is just that: crap.

As for AMX, I didn't know that about the director. I thought it was a great movie (but Norton's actions don't surprise me one bit).

I know bbdl pretty well, and it'd surprise me if he liked Gone With The Wind.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Leap of Faith...seen it 20 times and still love it!

Well it wasnt Norton that did it..the studio wanted a different cut so the director balked. He left to make a commercial and he studio had Norton do it then. Weird story...
