Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Ok I will post my full review in the dedicated thread but...Holy crap they did it!! Star Wars was epic! Second best of the series behind a Empire...and it is close!

So worth the wait. That is all.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I saw Creed last night...quite enjoyable. :)

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I'm seeing Star Wars tonight. My youngest son informs me I now qualify for the senior citizens discount.

Whippersnapper. I saw Star Wars when it first came out in 1977. He was 11 years away from taking his first breath and I was 4 years away from meeting his mother. HA!

Interstellar: From the point of the black hole and beyond, that was not expected.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

I find the last half hour of that movie to be ridiculous but the rest is great. The only Nolan movie I have ever felt zero need to watch again.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Anyone seen this new Cobain doc Soaked in Bleach? Should I bother?

As a rule, I avoid reading or watching anything related to his death unless it's well-vetted. There's way too much conspiratorial/cash grab crap out there.

I said "Fvck it", and took the plunge.

After watching the first 10-15 minutes, I was so angry, because I thought I'd been tricked into a conspiracy doc. Then, it turned into an anti-Courtney doc, complete with sinister, voiced-over reenactments. Of course, it rains every other scene - because everyone knows it always pours in Seattle. There's some nefarious creep named "Dillon" whose name sounds oddly/suspiciously like "Villian" . They tried to debunk the whole "history of suicide in the Cobain family" thing. Long story short, the conclusion is the part of the conspiracy story we're all most familiar with - "Seattle PD didn't properly investigate Cobain's death". ARRRRGH!

My god what a waste of time. I feel ashamed for watching this crap. I haven't been this POed about a film since I re-watched The Phantom Menace for the first time since I was 13.

My thoughts in a nutshell

The acting was good, and the plot was really intriguing up until the black hole. After that, I just don't know what to say about it.

The sound editor should've been replaced. I'm watching the movie with the volume on my TV up 25-50% of normal at various points in order to hear the dialogue, and then various bits of action sequence would begin and I'd have to hurry to turn down the volume so as not to get complaints from my neighbors.

Sisters is the funniest move I've seen probably 3 years. Starts out a bit slow, and it takes a while for the Fey/Poehler role-reversal to take hold, but once it does, it's fantastic. Absolutely hilarious.

A Very Murray Christmas.

This prob could be considered just "television," but I'm putting it here. Started off slow, then slowly escalated into the cheesy Christmas special it was meant to be. I was belly-laughing at George Clooney during his vocals in "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'."

Definitely recommend.

Too bad, too, because the first two hours is nerd crack. I'm sure they felt the need to dumb it down / woo it up for the broader demo, but I really wish someone would carefully remove it from Nolan's fingers and do a "good parts version" re-cut.

Of the recent high hype sci-fi, the fluff ratio is relatively high, but only because we have had such amazing luck:

Prometheus: 40% fluff
Interstellar: 25%
The Martian: 10%
Gravity: 2% and I don't care it made me cry oh jeez he was dead all along so sue me sniff
Ex Machina: 0%. Perfect.

Secrets should only be kept a secret if there's a point to it. There was no reason to hide Khan's identity at all in that movie. That was just Abrams doing his thing of putting stuff in his "mystery boxes" because that's what he does.

Sometimes secrets are deliberately there as misdirection for the audience. You spend all your time fretting about and then figuring out The Big-S Secret and you are being distracted so the real small-s secrets could develop quietly and interestingly without you overly worrying about them. Orson Welles does this very well. Nolan did it lovingly before his movies started having the operating budget of a Baltic republic. Abrams does not do it nearly as well as he thinks he does.

Parallels:

A couple people travel through alternate earths/universes looking for their father. I liked it...except the ending was horsesh*. However, I read up on it, and apparently it was originally supposed to be a pilot for a series (and that is still up in the air as of right now). So the movie gets a bit of a pass on that.

The premise isn't as rigid as other "alt-universe" movies, which was a big plus. Non-spoiler: a character in the movie says that one theory is that an infinite number of earths exist. One could just simply have one less mosquito. The only constant is, that you enter another universe at the exact same moment you left the previous one.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson went on a hand-wringing twitter rampage to "debunk" the "science errors" in Star Wars. Somebody please tell this pedantic fool that Star Wars is not a science documentary. (If you can't tell, attention whores irritate me)

He does it with each sci-fi movie released, and it's more of a bit than anything else. He knows that the vast majority of people out there understand the difference between a fantasy movie and something basing its plots around true science. After all, the people following Dr. Tyson on Twitter have a better than average understanding of science.

Spacecraft cannot stop on a dime and change direction. But, in the words if Gen. Maximus, "Are you entertained?" If so, please proceed to your seat and enjoy the movie.
