MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

Re: MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

Read the second part of the sentance (my emphasis)

Each segment of the rule is intended to be applied on its own. It should have been listed as an interference penalty, but no matter what the box score says, it's a 2 minute minor and a BSU PP.

So automatic penalty anytime a player loses his stick. boy, they like to call that one a lot.

At the point of the game it happened, yes.

Time to shut up about it, it's over with, you can't change it.

Try 4373. When was the last time Mariucci had every seat filled (for a Gopher game)?

I was making an exaggeration, to get in the wcha they had to build a bigger stadium that seated over 4,000, the place looked small on TV, every seat was filled though. The intensity showed in Serratore (coach), the crowd, it came across on TV, the Beavers were going to bring it, and they did. Matson was pummeled, that's a big loss for this team, Ness going down was as bad for the D. What it looked like to me was after Matson got hurt Lucia was yelling at someone and if it were me I'd be letting the ref know the game was about to turn into a huge slugfest and he better start blowing the whistle.
I'm hoping for a slump by Bemidji tonight and an early start for the gophers. Friday was all about intensity and Bemidji kept it going. Bjugs, Hoefel, and White have been great to watch. I hope the team comes out ready tonight.

Sure, but runs at players on the ice and knee-to-knee hits shouldn't be called. Yeah, whatever.

Re: MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

Matt Read for bsu was also injured and did not play in the third or overtime.

I think what Serratore was ujpset with in ot was a missed interference/hooking call. BSU had a 2 on 2 rush and had a third player coming on fast, pulling away from thr gopher on him. He was hooked/pulled down and no call was made.

The refs were consistant both ways last night even though it was consistently bad, it was consistent.

Re: MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

Gophers are a skilled team but they had a hard time moving the puck out of their own zone through much of the game, and the Beavers seemed more physical.

Looked like teams were evenly matched.

Re: MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

...where to start? I used to really follow the gophers and they were my team before Bemidji went DI. It's good to see what could have been the beginning of another good in-state rivalry, too bad it won't have time to develop.
I think it's been said and I agree that the officiating was poor right from the 18:10 mark of the 1st period. The horse-collar in the corner prompted the gopher announcers to state, "the gophers got away with one there". I also thought a checked player needed to hit the boards before hitting the ice to be called boarding as was called against Bemidji in the 2nd. So yes, there were calls that went both ways with the only difference being how much time was left on the clock. I would have been more satisfied with an interference call myself and if the gopher stick was coming down it would have been a slash. Lastly, the beaver did not have control of the puck as was stated earlier on this thread. The puck was in the air above everyone’s head when the stick went flying.
All the excuses are making the gopher fan base look bad. I think the one that made me laugh out loud was when fsn announcer said "Patterson seems to be fighting the puck...maybe its the lighting". Just like the hits, nothing intentional, just unfortunate. If Mattson wouldn't have started to curl, his knee wouldn't have been exposed, watch the replay. Hopefully both guys will be just fine.
Sorry for the long post. Oh and thanks to the other local teams, especially UND and UMD, for their scheduling the last 10 years.

I would disagree, but if you are going to apply the rulebook that strictly for that one call, there were about a dozen calls that should have been called (by the letter of the law) in last night's game against Bemidji that weren't. Given what the officials let slide, calling that call at that point in the game was a disgrace.

Do you disagree with how Moose applied the rule or with it being a penalty? At first I thought it was only when the player didn't have the puck, too, but then that would mean it's ok to play keep-away with someone's stick or shoot debris (???) at them, as long as they have the puck.

Hey, I am well past the penalty, as a wcha fan, typically I wait for Adam to make stuff up, but whatever. that said, most hockey fans and players are used to more lighting than there is at the BSU games. Was this done on purpose? was the old rink also darker?

The old rink didn't have the best lighting, but it didn't have to have the best lighting, either. Many would agree with me that it was on par with a decent HS arena in the metro area.

I wouldn't call it a penalty. To me, it looked far more likely that the Gopher player was trying to lift the stick to get the puck rather than "deliberately" trying to knock the player's stick away.

Exactly.

On the broadcast LaPanta said the ref admitted it was a bad call and apologized to Bjugstad.

BTW, why are we discussing a penalty call that wasn't made? He did NOT call it interference, but hooking.

Well played series, BSU. You stole a tie last night, we steal a win tonight.

Good luck in the playoffs.

Re: MN @ BSU: Wide-eyed Rookies Vs. Grisled Veterans!

This series is totally different with a healthy Matt Read.. although I suppose the same could be said about the gophers and their injuries

Anyways, it was truly a fun series to watch. Both nights were very physical.. I hope this turns into a great new rivalry in the WCHA.

I think if Denver wins tonight the Beavs will get Nebraska Omaha in the playoffs... a team that Bemidji State has dominated this season.

I think BSU/MN has the potential to be a good rivalry. Good luck with UNO, it's a good match up, but remember this is playoff time and it would be wise not to underestimate UNO regardless of your past success. IMHO they're going to be tough for anyone to beat.

I honestly haven't been this jacked about an upcoming Gopher post season in at least three seasons (07-08). Tonight was my definition of a "morale" victory for this team after a tough rollercoaster season. They ended on a high note, showed a rare come from behind win and extended their 7 game unbeaten streak into the post season. The Gophers took the game over in the third period, which incidentally has been their worst period all season, controlled play, matched BSU's physicality (hit count was basically even all night), consistently put bodies in front of the net and got the win in OT.

Nice job by Bjug tonight too. He has really developed this season into an impressive offensive beast. He's among the few in recent years (Schroeder) that has come right out of HS and excelled at the D1 level.

I predicted splits throughout this weekend (DU/SCSU, UW/CC, UNO/UMD, UAA/MSUM, MN/BSU...3/5 :)) but I never expected UAA to literally maul MSUM in their own house by outscoring them 8-1 in two games! UAA wins the tiebreaker with SCSU and it's Gophers vs. Seawolves next weekend for the first round of the WCHA playoffs. I like it!:)

If it had to be called something, yes. But it really should have been nothing. Hold on to your stick.
I don't even think you could claim he intentionally knocked the guy's stick out of his hand. If that was the intent, he probably would've chopped down on it (which is typically called slashing, not interference). If knocking a player's stick out of his hand is going to be called from now on, everybody is going to just have one hand on their sticks and deliberately drop them when an opponent initiates any contact. It'll become just as bad as the embellishment that happens whenever a player is minimally hooked/hit.
