MLB 2026: The dying of the light

Remember the time you had Ohtani, Mike Trout and Pujols? And then you lied and said you didn't want to win? Then why did you sign the best player in the world, Arte? Why did you sign the best player in the world?
To put butts in the seats, obviously.

ST, man. Pitcher Jack Wenninger removed for a reliever in the 6th, comes back again to start the 7th.

In WBC action, the Aussies beat Taiwan 3-0 and Korea throttled Czechia 11-4 to open up group play in Tokyo.

Australia vs Czechia tonight and then Japan plays their first game tomorrow morning against Taiwan.

I almost went to my first ST game today in Peoria but bailed. I'm sad I did.

18 different guys scoring runs for one team has gotta be close to the record.

An error that would’ve ended the inning dooms Czechia, giving up a three run shot to Australia that put the Aussies up for good in a 5-1 win.

Then in this morning’s game, Ohtani had a grand slam as part of a 10 run second on Japan’s way to a mercy rule 13-0 win in 7 over Taiwan.

US pulled away from Brazil with a big 9th for a 15-5 win last night, though Brazil did make it 8-5 at one point.

Brazil's roster includes two 17 year old and their first baseman works construction and had to take vacation to play in the WBC. Oh, and Dante Bichette Jr who either dyed his hair lime green or wore a wig.

Japan survives a tight one against Australia and clinches their spot in the quarterfinals. The last spot in Group C is up for grabs and a little convoluted due to tiebreakrs. If Australia wins, they're in. If Korea wins, they need to win by 5 but give up only 0 or 1. Meanwhile, Taiwan needs Korea to win, but have Korea score at least 7 and Australia score at least 2.

And all of this is if nothing goes extras, in which case the defensive quotient changes.

Czechia pitcher Ondrej Sartoria, the electrician by day, who struck out Ohtani in the 2023 WBC, pitched 4.2 scoreless against Japan today and received a standing ovation at the Tokyo Dome both when he left the game and when he came back onto the field after the game. He announced he’s retiring from baseball to spend more time with his family.

His fastball tops out at 79.

The interviews with him were wonderful.

US loses 8-6 to Italy and now needs Italy to beat Mexico to avoid a tiebreaker that could eliminate the US.
It’s better than that. US manager Mark DeRosa was on MLB Hot Stove yesterday morning and mentioned they already clinched. Then post game said he first “misspoke” and then “misunderstood the math” regarding eliminations. AKA he didn’t know the rules. That’s on top of having to be reminded by Ken Rosenthal during the midgame interview who he had in his bullpen.

Despite all the Dream Team talk, it doesn’t look like the US is taking this seriously between having a manager who doesn’t know the rules and letting Skubal show up for just 40 pitches against Britain. Talking about how you finally have buy in from the superstar pitchers doesn’t mean much if they aren’t even going to touch the pitch limit.
