MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Jon Niese (NYM) for Neil Walker (PIT).

Neil is in his last yr, but is a Pittsburgh hometown kid. So fans won't be that happy.

They ought to figure out a way to disable all cell phones within 70' of home plate.
Do you not like people talking on the phone or are you implying paying attention is enough to not need nets when within 70 feet of home plate?

We survived without nets for years by watching the game, not gabbing on the electronic device. Pay attention and the odds of getting seriously hurt are extremely low.

While i generally agree that people should pay attention. I know that even paying attention you don't get to choose which end of a broken bat hits you.

More importantly, MLB has released its netting recommendations.

Link (MLB.com):MLB recommends netting between dugouts

Not enough, at least if you're talking about fan safety instead of cheap PR points. The nets should extend the length of the dugouts.

All I'd like to see is the protection of those who CAN'T get out of harm's way. Those that don't get enough reaction time to duck before that foul ball caves their skull in.

Yeah, but the odds of that are 1 in a hundred million. The odds of getting hit by a line drive because you're fellating your electronic device are much better.

Let Darwin do his sacred work.

A 3 WAR player at a position of critical need for a pitcher we weren't going to use, and we unload salary?

Well done, Mr. Alderson.

BTW, I liked Niese and I think he'll help you guys. He just wasn't going to fit into our plans with the Fab Five all (hopefully) healthy by June.

I like it.

*Fun fact. I've actually been hit in the head by a foul ball. Probably explains a lot.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

My wife and I sat one row behind the visitor camera dugout at Wrigley for a game last year. Brought my glove with so I could at least pretend to have a fighting chance to deflect a rocket of a foul ball (mainly lefty hitters) (I have no aspirations of ever catching a foul ball, I'd rather leave the game on my terms and not with an icepack and an ushers assistance).

During pregame, the usher near our seats tried being funny in asking if I was hoping to be a player by bringing my glove. I begrudgingly give a chuckle.

Early in the game a screaming shot sails six rows over us and pegs a fan. The usher and I looked at each other and I said "and THAT is why I brought my glove!" To which he retorted with nervous laughter.

It is all about awareness. Sure there are times where accidents do happen, but people need to be more aware.

Netting to the dugouts seems to be a good compromise that should stop more foul balls.

Is MiLB given the same recommendation? Because I've sat at some minor league parks that have very little netting and seats much closer than MLB.

How many fans are injured at MiLB games versus MLB?

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

So should Samsung and/or Apple devise a cell phone that can "take a lickin' but keep on tickin'" to keep us safe?

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

At MiLB games they just take you across the street and get you laid. It's a lot less formal.

I see you've been to Harry Grove (or whatever its name currently is) in Frederick.

Good ol' Hairy Balls is indeed an interesting stadium, sandwiched between the cemetery where Francis Scott Key is buried and one of those buildings that firemen light to practice firefighting. BTW, the stadiums at Pawtucket and Durham and Altoona are also right next to those firefighter things. What gives?

Fireman of the Year Award?

BTW, we should meet @ a Keys game next season and toss back a few.

Yes. I haven't been to a Keys game since the year we moved here (2004). And I pass it once or twice a week. I am FAIL.
