Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

A least Joyce didn't run right into the lockers, and stood out there and took the (well deserved) crap from the players and managers.

Awful call.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I get that Umps in general want to get the calls right. I think we all realize that.

But I don't see what he could of saw on that play to make him think that was not an out.

If playing a game under protest ever got anything changed, this would be a candidate.

Thankfully it is a June game, and not playoff game where the outcome maybe gets changed by having the extra out.

Clue us in who have no idea what you're talking about, please.

The last hitter grounded to Cabrera. Cabrera throws to Galarraga, beating the runner by a step. Ump calls him safe.

Watch the replay. You will not believe what you see.

Imagine the Tigers leading the Indians 3-0 in the 9th inning. Imagine the Tigers pitcher having retired the first 26 batters in order.

Now imagine if you will a grounder between first and second base, fielded by the first baseman and thrown to the pitcher for an out by a good 2 steps.

Now lets say the Umpire calls that runner safe....

Detroit pitcher Armando Galarago perfect through 8 and 2/3. Grounder to 2nd, Cabrera throws out the runner by a half a step. Umpire Jim Joyce mistakenly calls him safe, hilarity ensues.

First of all, I haven't seen the play... So I am not gonna comment on Joyce's actual call yet...

But if you are gonna rip on him, how about we tell the situation like it is... At the MLB Level, 1/2 step is a hell of a lot faster than many people here can comprehend... It's a hell of a lot tougher than many people think to call safe/out...

It was a very clear blown call.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I love the reaction from the Cleveland dugout...and the trainer guy who can't believe he called him safe.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Oh, and guess who is scheduled to work the plate for tomorrow's game?

Half a step is close, but not really all that close. It's a call that is made correctly 99.9% of the time. I umpire baseball games, so I totally feel for Jim Joyce right now. Still, he made a bad call, and he's going to have to live with it.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

It really isn't that close. Not by MLB standards.

After seeing it in real time from a couple angles, it was close.

On the slo-mo replay, sure it's not even close to close.

Now, I'm not saying this is the correct way to do things, but I would think that the ump would favor calling an out in that particular situation, if only to avoid something like this. Kinda like a scorekeeper bending the scoring rules a bit to keep a no-hitter, etc.
