Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Personally, I'm hoping the robot that wished Paulie a Happy Birthday from Rocky IV would be the perfect home plate umpire.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I'd love to hear HAL say "Are you sure you want to do that, Gardy?" every time Ron pokes his head out of the dugout.

(248):

dude she was so drunk she thought Jim Joyce made the right call

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

This whole thing would be much better if Cowboy Joe West had made the call.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I'm not saying he will (I don't think he will. He doesn't have the balls.) but if Bud were to say "I'm reversing the call. He was out. Perfect game." Who's upset about this? Cleveland? Jason Donald? Todd Worrell? Tony Tarasco? Nah. It certainly would be thinking outside the box.

Jesus, talk about a circus that would be.

This is a simple, sad case of human frailty. There's no villain -- in fact, everyone involved seems to have acted in good faith and behaved well within the bounds of, to risk an elitist relic, gentlemanly conduct.

Maybe it could be taken as a lesson that sometimes, even with the best intentions, people make mistakes. As mistakes go -- well, hey, nobody died.

I think having the commissioner reverse any call made by an umpire is an extremely slippery slope. You have to accept a certain amount of human error, even if the timing is awful. Theoretically, if you want the commissioner to be able to make that call, and if Joyce had called him out, but a bad call had gone the Tigers' way earlier in the game, could the Indians complain and have it reversed to take the perfect game away? If no, why not?

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Time to bring back my simple replay suggestion, I think.

Manager gets one replay request per game that can be used for any umpire's decision with the exception of balls and strikes (non-reviewable) or home runs (continue using the same system). If the call is not overturned, the manager is ejected from the game.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Per CBS Sportsline, Ken Griffey Jr. has retired.

:(

Best player I ever saw, bar none.

Here's the difference between this situation and the situations with Worrell and Tarasco - this was a decision that, if it had been made correctly, would have ended the game. There were no outs when Worrell got Orta out - the Cardinals still had time to fix things themselves. The Orioles still had three more outs of their own to contend with after Jeter's home run that shouldn't have been. Human error is, and was, part of the game, and that's even true of last night, obviously. But in those situations, a reversal isn't going to necessarily provide one outcome or another.

Last night, the wrong call prolonged the game, but the end result - a 3-0 Tigers shutout victory - was not changed in the subsequent events. There were only two additions to anyone's statistics as a result - Donald got a hit (both steals were chalked to FI) and Crowe got an at bat. There's no major impact from Donald losing a hit and Crowe losing an AB, because A) the hit was illegitimate and B) the AB should have never happened.

Now, if Crowe had then hit a home run or something, there's more of an argument for leaving it intact. If it had been the 26th batter and not the 27th batter who had reached on the blown call, there would have been almost no standing for overturning. But NOTHING happened after the blown call. Reversing it is the right move here - Armando Galarraga earned his perfect game.

My only objection is that I wouldn't eject the manager. A ball (or strike, depending on who is in the field) added to the count, or a runner advances a base, fine. Let there be some penalty for being incorrect. But let's not kill a hornet's nest with a pound of dynamite here.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

The other thing with replay is, maybe a play earlier in the game is reviewed and then they can't review this play. So nothing changes.

They should just have a replay official onsite to review every play in real time. Then if there is something they want to take a longer look at they can buzz the field like football does.

But I wouldn't leave it in the hands of the teams at all.

I like that idea. Just put it in the booth and have them review plays on an as needed basis. No balls and strikes either.
