Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Perhaps some peoples cars couldn't start or they had kids home from school and no daycare options.

We were told we could work from home monday, because of the kids being home. Which is fine if you work for a company that it is feasible to work from home. Retail is a different story.

I can't remember them ever closing school here because of temps or wind chill. The county has -20 on a regular basis, -45 wind chills, who the heck cold was out there?

Back when I was in school (NNY) we had 1 day where school was closed for the cold, I believe. Something like -30 or -35, before wind chill. Some, or most, buses couldn't start, so they didn't have much choice.

There may have been another one, but I think it was the school heating system or water pipes weren't functioning. Can't remember for sure though.

Depends upon the terrain. They close schools here (or have late starts) not so much because of cold but because of ice on hills. you only need a few school buses to slide off the road once or twice to make everyone overcautious ever after. The hilly parts of the state have the closings / delays, the flat parts don't.

Yeah, that has lead to a few closings around here in SE Michigan. Some of those hilly back roads are pretty dang slick with packed down snow becoming ice on them and buses are just not going to go up them that well. Thankfully, above freezing here and getting some light rain, and looking to stay that way all weekend, so all of them roads should be just fine come Monday Morning, Only real worry they would have would be flooding from all of the melt that's going to happen here.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

The heat wave in Australia has been in the news lately because of the tennis tournament. Solidly above 105[SUP]o[/SUP]F each day. A plastic water bottle set down on the court started to melt.

The earth is substantially closer to the sun in December than in June, so that summers in the southern hemisphere generally are hotter than summers in the northern hemisphere as a result (and winters are colder there than here as well, all else being equal, which is why Antarctica in July is so much colder than the North Pole in January).

Even though the earth is closer to the sun in December, we still have winter then because the earth is tilted on its axis, so that we get less sunlight in winter and more sunlight in summer, which has a greater effect on our weather in the northern hemisphere than nearness to the sun (and which exacerbates the extremes in the southern hemisphere even more).

Don't overlook Avogadro's number.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

My bus arrived into Minneapolis at 7:53, and the TCF tower said that it was -11F. That's not so bad, but I was really annoyed that it was noticeably warmer in Minneapolis than my far flung suburb to the south.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

It has finally become ridiculous to me. I can't remember a winter that was this bad temperature-wise. Not saying it hasn't happened, I just don't remember it.

Same in Maine as far as recent memory is concerned. I'm sure its been colder but not recently

Hey, don't complain. Without 5mn Major's Christmas present to you it would have been much worse. :)

Its no surprise that Minnesota has been colder (in fact much colder) than usual. However in January, the upper Midwest is not just expected to moderate...but actually end up being significantly warmer than average.

My Christmas present for the thread.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Im to the point where working in -5 weather is no big deal. The other day I said "It doesn't even feel like its -7 outside." We've had -40 wind chills way too often down here in Iowa.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I am boycotting clearing this bull**** dusting of snow we keep getting until the temp reaches double digits. Eff you, winter. Just snow 5 inches in one day and be done with it.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Some forcasts are predicting it to be as cold as that Monday a few weeks ago where school was cancelled statewide. We'll see how what happens.... #ThreeDayWeekend
