Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Home lost power for 14 hours and we have some big tree limbs down. This information is all from the neighbor of course. Since we are in the Copper Country. Other than that ... Sounds like we missed a doozie

Don't you guys have a roommate too?

No power (or appliance) loss here, but the other side of the street did, so our neighbor is going to be staying here tonight. A friend of mine in Plymouth says Xcel told her they may not get power back until noon Wednesday.

She just moved out... Like Friday haha. Funny timing

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I had a tree split in half last night. What a clusterf*k.

The part of the tree on the ground is gone. The really sad part is that it was a very healthy tree. All of the limbs were healthy and the thicker portions that broke off were flawless inside. No bugs or disease. There is still some of the tree left with a good amount of leaves, so I'm hoping it will survive since it still provides a good amount of privacy from the road on my deck. Looks a little weird but whatever. It looks like it's a small tree, but when the main trunk came down after the chainsaw, it left about a 4-5 inch deep hole in the ground. Glad we all got out of the way fast enough when it did come down. It was heavy enough to kill someone. I'm really hoping it survives but I have absolutely no hope that it will. The first sign that it's going t!ts up I'm going to knock it down with the chainsaw though. :(

Thankfully my dad had a chainsaw we were able to get running after a lot of tinkering. The saw was 30+ years old and hasn't been run since about 2004. It only needed a new spark plug. Plus the neighbor called a few of her coworkers (cops) and they helped with the haulaway and trimming the small branches before my dad got there. I gave them the wood as a portion of the repayment for the help. Probably got at least half a cord maybe even 3/4 of a cord with the portion on the ground.

Sounds like we had 6+ inches of water last night (total) according to my neighbor's rain gauge. She said the main street had 2 ft of water running down it at one point. Just an amazing amount of water. My gutters are clean and they were overflowing massively. In fact, on one side of my house, the water was coming down so fast it just flew OVER the gutters and onto the grass. Made a nice 3' wear pattern. The backyard is a complete swamp right now. It's going to take days to dry out. It sounds like everyone south of me lost power but my neighbor and I both had power. Thankfully. Based upon the sounds I heard in the neighborhood, I was the only one with a tree down. I didn't hear any other chainsaws running.

I've learned a couple of life lessons since I've never had a tree go over like that:
1. When a tree falls in a neighbor's yard, even if it doesn't affect you, go out and help. Period. It's a lot of work (and potentially dangerous) and help is always appreciated.
2. Never come over to gawk if you're not going to help. I had three neighbors come over and gawk and one even brought her very young grandchild a few hours later to come see. By the third or fourth time, I was livid. Thanks for helping a*sholes. I'll remember this as the only exception to rule #1.
3. It's not necessary to own a chainsaw, but it is necessary to know someone with a chainsaw. Before trying to run said chainsaw, do yourself a favor and buy a new spark plug and some Seafoam. Especially if it's 30+ years old.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Went up to Crystal today to visit the parents and go out to dinner with them. Holy buckets Crystal and St Louis Park got nailed. One street near my parents' place....all 5 houses on one side of the block EACH had a tree knocked down, and they were not small trees. Damage was minimal (one backyard deck probably will have to replace a railing), thank goodness.

Went to eat at Toby Keith's, and half of the exit from Hwy 100 to Cedar Lake Road was blocked by fallen branches/road signs. Additionally, a sinkhole happened on 42nd Ave in Robbinsdale (though not necessarily caused by the storm). Eastbound lanes will not open for quite a bit.

Overall, saw a ton of fallen trees between those two cities. Here? Minimal. A branch or two. Also, they lost TV/Interwebs/phone until a few minutes ago.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

When I talked to my mom earlier today, she said she had 5-6 trees down. Plus a tree IN another tree (or two). Reread that to make sure you get the full impact. She had a full pine tree stuck in the tops of other trees. Not leaning on them, but IN the tree. She said the whole thing was eerie to look at.

Not sure where your mom lives, my dad was saying 70mph winds were reported in the Crystal area (he's a weather geek; much more than you and I combined).

Spring Lake Park.

I'm a huge weather geek. More so than I portray on here. I'm more than capable of reading things like Skew-T plots and know the history behind them. Things like that and knowing what readings mean thunderstorms and which ones are better indicators than others. :)

I typically don't even look at the radar images anymore except to see if the hook-echo is forming in particularly nasty storms.

I'm more than convinced we had hurricane-force winds here in Oakdale. I've never seen trees bend like the ones in my backyard. All straighline winds. The winds at ground level were minimal but the 30' conditions were vastly different.

I'm a radar geek to see when it's going to hit. I get things like wall clouds, hooks, etc, but it's more live/visual for me. How the wind is blowing, or what color the clouds are, etc. The "feel" of it, I guess.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I edited my previous post, but I'm absolutely convinced we had hurricane-force winds here in Oakdale. You simply aren't going to snap a 12"-16" tree literally in half without some serious winds. I'm stunned that it was the only tree in the neighborhood though. Especially since it was a perfectly healthy tree.

Agree on the winds. They were insane here. And it may not be the tree in some cases (like yours, that was the wind). The ground may have been so saturated that it couldn't support the tree against those high winds, hurricane-force or not. About half the trees I saw were just uprooted.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

It was pretty fun watching a zombie apocalypse movie and hearing the wind and rain outside over the audio. Then to walk out to the damage was creepy.

Pictures of this would be interesting to see.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I'm hoping she got some pictures before the tree service came through. Her association contracts with a tree service from what I understand.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

On Friday night I was looking out some windows at Stinson & Broadway. The sewers were bubbling up into the already flash-flooded intersection and 40-foot tall trees were bowing to the wind god. It got so bad that we couldn't see the flood lights across the street during the worst of it. After that, we watched the traffic trying drive down Stinson. A lot of u-turns could be seen, and a few cars attempted to make their way, only to get stuck. Trucks had a hard time traversing the street. A fire truck even turned around to find another route. Crazy night.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

We lost power from about 4 am to noon on Friday. Still no internet via Century link.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

And my internet is back! So here's a few pictures of the carnage...no injuries from what I hear. This is all on my street, about 3 blocks worth. I live in South Minneapolis over by Minnehaha Park.

Amazingly, didn't lose power, but lost internet for a bit.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Weather geek here and I'm extremely disappointed I missed out on the storms while we were in Michigan. Sounds like the strongest storm I've personally experienced since the 1999 storm that knocked down all those trees in the BWCA. I was at a family cabin SW of the BWCA and the storm hit us and then hit the BWCA. Never seen skies so green before or since.

It's crazy. Our neighbors kitty corner from the house have no power still. And we've had it for most of the weekend.

The power has been really spotty. A friend in Plymouth (not the same friend MNS has) said Wed for restoration. I had my internet/etc back within 12 hrs. Parents in Crystal (about 2 miles from your place) had it back within about 18 hours.

Power never even flickered in my corner of Anoka County. :)
