Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I pity anyone who has never spend a weekend at the lake.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I've never felt like I'm killing time when I'm up north.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Is it that inconceivable there are those of us that live here, and despite traveling all across the US and even to several different countries, still enjoy it? ;)

Now my wife and I will end up in Thailand at least half the year eventually, but I love where I live.

I loved the years I spent in MN, but some people talk about loving the extreme weather a bit too much...to the point of it sounding like they're trying to convince themselves that snow the first week in May is a good thing more than they're trying to convince others that they actually love that about MN (same goes for -40 degree temps, blizzards that shut down the state, etc).

I'm with you. I hate the crap that you listed. Every second of it.

What I love about this place has nothing to do with the weather. It is my family and the people I have met and have gotten to know. Nothing more, nothing less.

I am sure that this is why most people stay wherever they happen to end up, cold climate or not.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Agreed. Pure bliss.

Get ready for the people that will make fun of the "up north" expression by the way.

Who would do that?

As someone who grew up southwest of Chicago, "up north" held a very special meaning and we vacationed (not exactly the right term - pilgrimaged?) "up north" every summer of my childhood and my parents built a home and retired in 95 on the land that they bought "up north" in the 70s.

Many of my best memories from my life happened "up north."

Anyone who would make fun of "up north" or the "north woods" either hasn't been there or didn't "get it" when they were.

I was talking about people that don't understand the phrase. Kind of like Mainuhs saying "down east." Settle down, everyone.

Don't know of many people who make fun of up north. But I'd say if I had to choose there are many more fun places. The cities' restaurants, concerts, parks, vibrancy and other social events. If you travel, the FL keys, Bourbon street, CA pac coast, Manhattan, London, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I like the north woods. But they're no better than dozens of other cool things you could do with your spare time (esp in the 21st century).

I don't think we're talking about the same thing.

What I get from "up north" is way beyond "fun" and certainly can't be found on Bourbon Street, in Manhattan or London or some restaurant.

Sure, you can water ski anywhere that there's sufficient open water or fish anywhere there's fish.

But you can only hear the silence and feel the weight of time in certain places and the north woods is one of those places. It's very spiritual and I've talked to many others who feel the same way.

I've been to the Keys several times (actually got engaged on a beach on KW) and the Caribbean several more. It's great down there and I love it - can't wait to go again, but it's for very different reasons than the north woods.
