Minnesota Women's Hockey 2026-27: Here Comes The Boom

That is the first I've heard of this. I worked with a guy whose kid was a goalie on Team WI with Kessel and Skille and he said they hated each other. Maybe that had something to do with it.
Skille played WI HS/Team WI and Kessel played AAA Caps. They played together on NTDP. It is my understanding they did not get along too well.

Everything I've read says Wisconsin did go after Phil. I was 8 or 9 when this all happened so I don't know. Chris Chelios said he didn't pick North Dakota because he didn't like James Patrick when they'd played against each other.

Watched the exhibition versus Durham West. It's hard to tell much from a matchup versus younger players. My early takeaways in the absence of better-informed facts...

The Gophers look like they will be a deeper team, as opposed to recent editions that seemed to go as one or two players went. Does that mean that they won't have stars? Maybe not; time will tell, as there is potential for some future stars. Goals were scored by a variety of players in a number of ways (snipes, tips, rebounds). Have to see who can score in those games where goals don't come easily.

New additions look to be unselfish, but that could be owing to the fact that teammates were often open. Hartmetz stands out as a type of player that we haven't had recently, particularly with respect to her hands, feet, and vision. What she doesn't have much of is size, so Winny might be a good mentor in terms of playing defense in the WCHA against much bigger opponents. New players are largely high-quality additions.

All three goalies played and had to save at least one decent chance, but nobody faced more than three shots.

The team has pieces, but if they are to challenge those on top, the staff will have to get them to improve from now until March. If nothing else, they should be entertaining.

It looks like the apathy in this program is still alive and well despite the change in leadership.
-I don't know how much to trust the blue line beyond #8. If Hartmetz can produce points right away, that will go a long way, but I never expect that of freshman D.
-Clark has run out of steam each of the last two years, although I really like her when she's on her game.
-There's a lot of talent up front—D'Alessandro as the 13th F is both crazy and justified—but is there someone who can take over a game like Murphy? I'm sure #97 and Milani—or even Primerano—will be able to by the end of their careers, but that's still a ways off and the team will probably need that to beat one of the two teams ahead in a game that matters.

Boom was my top choice knowing Muzerall was always unrealistic. I'm gonna watch from the beginning like I always do. But the team needs to prove it. And they especially need to prove it to the people who don't live 1,300 miles away. If they show proof of concept, there will be an audience.

What was the score?

The top two pairs were Primerano/Jordan and Graham/Hartmetz most of the time. While points from the D are nice, the first objective is to avoid having the primary assist on the goals against.

One thing that Leveille did well as a player was maintaining a high compete level. There were times when Wisco' would dominate play even during her era, but she was able to both minimize the damage and return with the same fire the next time. Hopefully, she'll be able to establish a rapport with her charges and help them to do the same.

My preference would be that we can see one or more lines that can build chemistry and take over games as a unit, not a solo act. At times, Murphy's style would result in teammates standing around watching her.

On the team's socials, the players were asked who would score the first goal of the season. Tally was as follows:

Fanale 8
Milani 6
Allard 3
Primerano 3
D'Alessandro 1
Distad 1
Graham 1
Hartmetz 1
Lindsay 1

Minnesota's 2027 recruits: Forwards Jaycee Chatleain (Hill-Murray) and Talla Hansen (Benilde) and defender Anais Leprohon (Limoilou).

Minnesota's 2028 recruits: Forwards Ryann Chimera (OHA Edmonton), Mackenna Schlieman (Breck), Mia Sutch (Centennial) and defenders Taylee Manion (Hill-Murray), Callie McCullough (BK Selects), Alexis Ulrich (Breck).

Still think they will need a goalie in the 2028 class.

Although none of the players were correct, at least we were shown ample evidence for the Milani selection. Other than her, it was always going to be a tough question, because there are many people on the roster with potential to score, but few that one can count on to score. There were people not dressed who can score, but we'll have to see whether or not they were healthy scratches. If they were, I'd expect to see them in uniform today.

Anyway, up front, it seems like a roster with a lot of people who fall somewhere between a 2nd- or 3rd-liner. They can play enough to be in the lineup, but not sure how quickly we'll have a definite first line. There are going to be some growing pains on the blueline, although for the goals allowed, the forwards looked to share an equal amount of blame.

What I'm most interested to see moving forward is do they steadily improve? That will determine whether or not the apathy lessens or becomes a fixture of the program.

Plosova is with her national team. I think Goldsworthy is injured as she missed the exhibition. Paul missed Saturday's game with an injury, Boom said, but it is not expected to be long-term. Piggott I'd guess might have been a healthy scratch, but if she didn't play Game 2 with Paul out I don't know (especially knowing Sander was playing forward today).

Closer one than it should have been today but Milani's hustle secures the empty net goal and the Tunnel Crew is 4-0 with the Buckeyes coming to town. Primerano will be back; will Piggott?

They will prob grab a goalie from the portal! Anais is very talented but 2028 class looks better.

Big weekend for bringing down The Apathy coming up. The first test of Boom's tenure. I haven't really been impressed by much of the offense so far except in the very first game (Milani had a really good game on Sunday) but I've liked how the defense has played (including the offense from the blueline). At home, I think a split is on the table. However, I also feel a bloodbath is on the table.

The first 8-10 minutes yesterday were kind of scary, given the number of times the Gophers lost a Beaver around the net in the D-zone. Line changes continue to be a concern, although Hemp stopped the resulting 2-on-0 yesterday. Some years, I've felt that we had a trustworthy 4th line, but Frost wouldn't play them against the strong teams. The 4th that we've skated to date has been suspect in their own zone, so it'll likely be three lines with some extra wing(s) most days.

To get points next weekend, they'll probably have to steal them. tOSU is already sped up after having played both PSU and UW. I guess we don't know how good Bemidji is yet, but...

The good news out of a series like the one that is coming up is that it shows them some idea of how far they'll have to go in order to be relevant. Losing 3-1 might be a good outcome at this point.

Was there ever a reason announced for the odd Maine/BSU schedule over the weekend? Was there originally going to be a 2nd eastern school that dropped out?

Usually on a showcase, you'd have 4 teams, so each West school gets to play 2 different Eastern teams, and vice versa. Playing Bemidji as a non-conference game, especially when they were just up there the previous weekend was just strange.

Yes.
