Minnesota Women's Hockey 2025-26

My thoughts off the top...

Marty Sertich: Hobey Baker caliber player with coaching in his DNA.
Winny B.B.: has been helping develop hockey players in Minnesota for years.
Lev': one of the most successful goalies as a Gopher and top notch as a competitor; hopefully, she can pass this on to her pupils.

Two former Gophers. Maybe this ultimately won't improve things, but at least the hires make sense. It looks like there is an effort to improve on things that weren't working.

Winny has a lot of contacts in the game. Even though it's been awhile since she played in college, you couldn't go very long where she didn't have a sibling or niece on a D-I roster. Not your typical newcomer. Between her and Leveille, they have played with and coached so many people that they will know somebody associated with a lot of different teams.

It's been awhile since I thought this program has moved in the right direction, but I think that it has here.

It's interesting that two or possibly three recruits bailed before the assistants were announced. Why not just wait and see who got hired? Were they under the gun as far as getting in the portal before it closed for them? It seems like they made decisions possibly in haste.

None of them entered the portal. Actually no one who is part of the 2026 class changed their commitment either. So the staff will have a tough task to fill the 2027 class a year behind but it's not like they had to scramble to finalize the current roster.

Decomitts are rumored to be entering college early so the portal is irrelevant to the
Incoming freshmen volleyball players will graduate a semester early from high school, so they can play in spring VB matches and practice with their college team, with it essentially not affecting their four years of eligibility playing their fall sport.

But ice hockey spans both semesters of a school year. An ice hockey player entering college at the start of a spring semester at least potentially affects their eligibility for s spring semester four years or five years down the road.

So, what do you mean by "entering college early"?

Just like Primerano did… not a good idea as she showed but you can’t tell them that.

So, what do they do during the spring? What is the advantage? How does not being in either school for the spring gain them anything?

(Not to mention they miss out playing the spring half of their senior year in high school.)

Entering in the fall isn't "early".

Football has been doing that for a long time. Graduate High School early and enroll in College so they can participate in Spring practices. Eligibility does not start until Fall.

Their "five year clock" starts when they enroll. But because football (and volleyball) are fall sports only, their clock starting to run early doesn't matter. But for an ice hockey player, it could well matter.

They graduate high school a year early…. Enter college in the fall.
They have enough course work to meet requirements of high school graduation.

So generally, they are 17 year olds playing against 21 and 22 year olds. That doesn't sound like a very good idea to me. Certainly not an advantage.

You mentioned Primerano. Can you point to anyone else who has done this? And what does it have to do with "decommits" and the portal?

Avery Pickering at Colgate did this. And there was a goalie at Princeton this year but she didn't play much. I think Duluth signed an 09 for next year as well.

A number of kids finish high school a semester early. They play on their high school teams in the fall. Then enroll in college in January so they can participate in spring ball.
