Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

F Amy Potomak (Pursuit of Excellence 19U) from Aldergrove, British Columbia

For those of you that have interest in such things, Ms. Potomak has left Pursuit of Excellence and will be playing with the Pacific Steelers of the JWHL this coming season. The prime interest to Gopher fans in this switch is that the JWHL yearly plays a weekend of games at Ridder and Mariucci with some of their teams. This year will be the weekend of January 20-22, 2017. The Pacific Steelers are scheduled for four games....

Friday vs. Washington Pride 9:00 a.m.
Friday vs. Boston Shamrocks 9:00 p.m.
Saturday vs. NAHA White 5:30 p.m.
Sunday vs. Ridley College 9:00 a.m.

Game times are listed as being Eastern Time, but I think they might be local time, I'll try to find out.

The one thing that could throw a wrench in this as far as Amy Potomak playing is that the World U-18 thing is the previous week in the Czech Republic (I think it ends Sunday the 15th). Travel arrangements and fatigue could possibley keep her from playing, but I'm guessing it's unlikely. The Gopher women are in town that weekend with Ohio State and the Late Friday and the Saturday Steeler games are timed pretty well to make good double header viewing. All the Steeler games are scheduled at Mariucci.

In the badger thread Tim admitted he is trying to start a fight. I guess there isn't enough animosity on the boards. Thats rushing the season as the vitriol will flow naturally soon enough.

I don't want to start a fight, just trying to get a little rise out of the eastern folks. I will admit I am rushing the season.

I think I have it right that you are a Clarkson fan. If so they have earned some respect with their title. I also was really impressed with how they came out and attacked BC in last years semi-final.

Everyone will find out what Clarkson's got in the tank 10/14 & 10/15. I'm very looking forward to that series. I'm hoping there will be a way for me to see a game or two on the interweb.

Should we call Vegas now and book a Gopher/ Badger final?

If IN Vegas don't bother trying to bet on the women's Frozen Four final at the Monte Carlo...tried to place a bet on UM/BC and was told "we don't do women's hockey here". Oh well, probably for the better anyway.

CCT web casts all its home games for free. Start with clarksonathletics.com and follow the multimedia links.

Ditto for SLU(t). :)

Sweet! How exciting! I love being able to watch opponents that are uncommon for UW to play. Also looking forward to seeing Cornell. Sorry for hijacking the rodent thread.

Now that Muzerall has been officially announced at OSU....anyone have any inside info on her replacement?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Coach Muzerall has been removed from the GWH roster, but noone has yet to be added :o

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

What's the buzz on Muzz's replacement? Will it be hard to fill this spot so late in the game or will the "M" be enough to lure anyone away from anywhere? I vote for hard to fill, really hard to fill.

Not hard to fill per se, but it will definitely be a challenge to replace her with someone of equal ability, especially given the timing.

Correct...I think they could find someone on short notice who has recently graduated (Bethany Brausen comes to mind) but it will be difficult to replace what Muzerall did for the recruiting process. Having just recently lost out to Wisconsin on players like Britta Curl and Makenna Webster it is important to find someone who can fill that void.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

either they want to play for the best or they'll have to settle for one of the pretenders

at this late date, and given next year is an Olympic year, they might be best hiring an interim coach

If Muzz couldn't beat MJ, some rookie will only do worse. It's ok though, the roster for the next 3 years is pretty much filled for UW. Unless MJ takes a page out of Frosty's playbook and hoards them.

Not hoarding. Strickly a case of demand outstripping supply, i.e. more girls wanting to play for the two-time defending national champions. Perhaps someday Wisconsin will find itself in a similar position....

other than Chicken Little, who says the Gophers lost out? Each school can only get so many, I'd say the Gophers did quite nicely last year, this year , and next year, they rank right up there with the best classes ever, maybe not quite 2012/13, but darn close.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Brausen has the potential to be a really good hire. At least what was expressed publicly while she was a player made it seem like she could be a very good coach if she has a real interest in it, as I assume she does. She has no experience coaching at this level, but Frost and Johnson have plenty to cover while she gets up to speed. She'll have to learn recruiting, but it helps that the Gophers have a large slate of commitments already for coming years.

So, I approve of this hire. Then again, I'm biased, since she was a part of my favorite Gopher class ever.
