Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

What the heck happened in < 24 hours? They looked like a totally different team. The one Friday couldn't complete a pass for nothing. Today even in the third period when they were shuffling people all around, they put a far greater quantity of pucks on teammate's sticks.

To a point, I agree about keeping lines together. It's hard for the coaches to do when a) people are getting knocked out of the lineup at least every other game; b) some of the lines have zero chemistry.

Gunderson from Reilly and Barlow may have been my personal highlight of this season to date. Not so much the goal as the celebration; it's nice to see them so happy.

Agreed that this team has not been seen this season. I assume some of the missed passes had to do with the extra 15 feet of ice but that does not explain the large number of whiffs. The biggest difference I noticed today was energy. All year long the team looked tired & players often looked like they were having to drag themselves over the boards. There was a lot of energy today.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

It would have been Gunderson's second career goal, but she missed an open net in the second period.

We got goals from all four lines and a defenseman. A good day.

^^^^ This. 4 line attack adds energy to the team. A lot more jump today. We are in the dog days of the season and contributions from everyone is needed. Getting ready for playoffs.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

For whatever reason, Reilly just doesn't seem to click on the first line, but they either need to stop trying it, or give her a whole weekend there. This approach of starting that way every game and then changing their mind in the second period seems pretty pointless. Right now, there are no line combinations that are going to produce immediate offense, so at least let people get used to each other.

After yesterday, we also know that the answer to the question, "How many Gophers can fit in the crease?" is, "At least five."

I only counted four, but there may have been one behind Peters I didn't see.

So after the game yesterday we had dinner at Granite City. I'd recommend the Bennie Bock beer, by the way. Our waiter asked us what we were doing in town and then told us that the Gophers had been there for breakfast that morning. If that's true, I suggest they always eat breakfast there when they play in St Cloud and whatever they ate Friday morning for breakfast, don't ever eat that again. :)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I am glad to see Peters get a couple of positive results. She was not under enormous pressure but she gave up only one goal on the weekend and even that one looked to me to be a near in deflection. She had a good weekend.

Looking forward I just think she is pretty clearly the best they have and when she plays with confidence she can be good enough. With all of the injuries at forward this team very much needs a goaler being at the very minimum "good enough".

This team already has 5 losses. They have two more games with Wisconsin (and two with North Dakota) before post season. The Gophers look like they need to win the WCHA tournament and the auto-bid to be assured of a posistion in the NCAA tournament. Failing to win the auto-bid could mean looking to Pairwise with 8 or 9 or maybe even 10 losses. I am pretty sure 10 losses will not get into the tournament.

It looks like there are a lot of really important games coming up in the next month.

Which is exactly as it should be. Let's play hockey.

When you watch Peters her fundamentals are good. So then It comes down to the mental aspect of trusting the learned techniques and practice reps. To me, she looked like she was overthinking things so that it was hindering her reactions. Hopefully she is gaining her confidence back.

I'll agree to a point, but I think May has demonstrated that she deserves to start if the starting goalie needs a rest or can't post a save % of 90. She seemed to bring some passion to the team, and that's something that has been lacking at times this year. Hockey should be fun.

I remember a season where the Gophers not only got in with 10 losses, they hosted a quarter.

Sure would be nice if the team had a difficult choice to make, come playoff time.
It might make sense to give each an opportunity to shine each weekend, alternating until playoffs start.
Then go with the hot hand.

Looking forward to seeing Grace Zumwinkle in a Maroon and Gold uniform next season:

Breck's Grace Zumwinkle is bringin' the heat with her slapshot

With that shot you can see why she was, at times, on the point for the U18 power play. Definitely looking forward to seeing how the Gophers put her to use on the power play.

Mr. T was asked what his prediction was for WCHA goalies facing Zumwinkle next year...

"Working with Bjugstad helped Zumwinkle find a stick with the proper flex, which means a stiffer shaft to give her better control. She’s the only female high school player Bjugstad has seen use an 87 flex. Most are in the 60s."

When I was a kid, highly curved sticks were all the rage. The result was that many kids had a great slap shot but their wristshot was inaccurate and backhand was non existent. The coach, at least at my school, had very limited funds to buy sticks, hell our school didn't have an indoor rink until after I graduated. So everyone bought their own, and my dad being cheap, bought one he thought would last longer than his job ( a construction worker) so although my slap shot was an ankle biter, it was accurate, and it forced me to develop a good wrist and backhand.

Today, it's using a spaghetti noodle, and the result is that they get off quick shots, and shots that really take off, but can't hit a barn.

PC, what did you do to make Brookyone go away?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I didn't do anything, Ze is still around, I got a nastygram from zer, I would guess zer time is mostly consumed by attending all of the post election protests

I might have seen Brooky with a vagina on the head in Madison 2 weeks ago at one of the protests that I accidentally stumbled into looking for food between hockey games.
