Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

Bad rebound from rumpel on last goal. And worse, he was completely out of position after that.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

Rumple was also marooned on a deserted island by the badger defense which is just a massive shipwreck Currently.

It's a bit deeper than that.

And we tied (officially) against a crappy team. *Sigh*. Ok. But that crappy team is WI? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

That was probably the dirtiest knee to knee hit I've seen at the college level in my 25 years of watching it.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

It was a bad knee to knee hit and totally avoidable by the becky player. Should have been tossed from the game.

So we go 2-0-2 against becky this year, they didn't win, even though they suck I'll take it. So there's that.

SO's don't count, unless you enjoy wearing women's underwear.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

After reviewing the hit on C Reilly, I'm not sure McGuire had malicious intent to specifically target Reilly's knee. Reilly fanned on the puck on a stick handle off the wall and the replay shows he was looking 3 feet away at the puck he just lost and not McGuire coming across the neutral zone. McGuire definitely intended to take the body, and naturally stabilized himself on his skates and slightly lifted his right shoulder to initiate a check. But Reilly had his head down looking at the puck three feet away and made no attempt to step out of McGuire's path, which is what you learn to do at this level or you get hurt.

Immediately before the hit, Reilly realizes McGuire's going for his shoulder and tucks his shoulder in just before impact, but leaves his right leg dangling in front of the oncoming McGuire. McGuire lifts his shoulder and misses Reilly's shoulder by a faction of an inch. That left Reilly's knee exposed and the end result was a knee to knee collision. I highly doubt McGuire was thinking I'm going to take out his knee with my knee, putting his own knee in harms way. He definitely appeared to want a piece of Reilly though. The play developed quickly and it was an unfortunate outcome for Reilly.

McGuire was very apologetic in the post game interview and didn't appear to me to be the type of player that attempted a hit with intent to injure. From the angle of the hit it looks like a possible meniscus injury, which I've had as well. If only a strain, he'll maybe need a couple weeks. A sprain and he's done. I hope it's minor.

I agree on the analysis of the play. Hopefully he's at worst case just out a few weeks.

If UW was 50% better on D zone coverage they easily win both games. I had that feeling of impeding doom after Hughes scored. It's going to take years for me to recover the feeling of being confident in a lead.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

Initial reports are CR may be done for the year. Something along the lines of "we'll be lucky to have him back."

Oh my God the minutia we go through to try and excuse this crap. He stuck out his knee, hit hit him. It's more the hitters responsibility to be safe than the hittee yet we always excuse the hitter for what the hittee does. Ridiculous.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

Does anyone have a link to video of the hit? Seems like opinions are all over the place. I was at the game and didn't really notice anything dirty about it in real time, but that doesn't really mean it wasn't.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

It's always difficult to know intent, but I also didn't see the hit as malicious.

That isn't to say it wasn't careless and dangerous. It was both those things, and I think McGuire should be suspended.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: 1/30 & 1/31

McGuire's comments at the post game presser:

“Obviously that’s a tough play. I’m not the kind of player that would be looking to do stuff like that. I want to start off by saying that my prayers are with Reilly there— I hope he’s okay and gets back to playing soon if he is injured. He came across the blue line in the neutral zone and made little juke to the outside. I was just coming across. I didn’t move in time and our shins kind of hit, and he got the worst of it. Like I said, I hope he’s okay, and I’ll be thinking about him.”

McGuire doesn't have it in him to be a dirty player. It's just not in his personality. Ben Clymer (who I hate doing color) was making something of McGuire smiling in the penalty box. There is never a time when McGuire is not smiling. Ever. He's just happy-go-lucky by nature, plus it's just the way his face works.

I hate seeing a kid get hurt like that (even Gophers) and hopefully C. Reilly has the best possible outcome and is able to get back on the ice as soon as possible. Best to him.

Beyond that, guck the fophers. The lowly Badgers were better more on the whole weekend but are cursed yet again with the lead and the clock passing 19:57 in the third... Perhaps we'll get another crack at it in the B1G tournament. If not, somebody please just confirm that Ambroz will be out of eligibility this year.

I'm not trying to excuse McGuire at all, but IMO the evidence of intent to injure looks questionable. McGuire came out of a turn and adjusted to a wider stance to deliver an open ice hit on Reilly who was the puck carrier, and leaned right in Reilly's direction, so naturally his knee would be slightly out to provide angle support for the hit. And Reilly did duck the check, so he saw McGuire and knew what was coming. But he was more concerned about the puck he just lost and did not completely stride or jump out from in front of McGuire and unfortunately exposed his knee.

Open ice hits in the neutral zone are usually high speed collisions. In a situation like that he needs dump the puck immediately and prepare to win that battle to put McGuire on his back...exactly like THIS. But let's say Tony focuses on the puck instead and tucks his right shoulder in to avoid the hit like Reilly did, but drags his leg and takes that hit...it's very likely a knee to knee. McGuire said it was an accident and I believe him. But you'll have to decide for yourself if he's telling the truth >>> here's McGuire's explanation at the post game press conf. beginning at 9:50.
