Minnesota vs Bye Week: 10/17 & 10/18

Re: Minnesota vs Bye Week: 10/17 & 10/18

I love that there is a UMN bye thread but no UMD season thread or MSU UMD series thread. :D

why bother talk to myself with a couple other people posting every so often. All the UMD fans I know on are on Twitter

Well, at least we can now say big ten hockey is as good as big ten football

I check the B1G network every week in search of some hockey on Friday night. Instead I get women's college volleyball. After last night's results, I guess I see why. Good week for the Gopher to be on bye.

Re: Minnesota vs Bye Week: 10/17 & 10/18

Well, as so often is the case when we play Bye, the games this past weekend weren't much to watch. It was like neither team decided to show up. Hopefully this coming weekend will prove to be more memorable.

A week off for the Gophs but not a great week for the Big Ten. Early in the season obviously but a few more weeks like this and it'll be lucky if 2 Big Ten teams make it to the NCAAs.

As long as MN makes it I couldn't care less how many Big10 teams go.

I don't feel any conference allegiance the way I did when MN was in the WCHA. When in the WCHA, I had an academic dislike for some teams but when games were played I had an emotional pull for the league's teams. Not the case with the Big10.

In another year when MN is going to be in a battle to make the final 16 that will change; but this year, MN shouldn't be in danger of falling out of the top 12-13 in the PWR. Seeding isn't that much of a concern in my eyes.

I would still like the Big10 teams to do well in non-conference games. We want the Gophers to finish as high as possible in the PWR, and that goal would be much more easily accomplished if teams like Michigan and Wisconsin would start winning out of conference. In the end it may not matter if the Gophers win most of the games they should, both in and out of conference, but this is by no means assured. So until we get into conference play I'm all in as far as how the other teams do...and right now as MNAmhFan notes it's not looking very good.

Re: Minnesota vs Bye Week: 10/17 & 10/18

I don't find seeding to be all that important. It's a nice feather in the cap to be a #1 seed, but aside from that there isn't too much value. Last change throughout and staying close to home are the only real advantages, and the latter can sometimes end up working against you depending on sites and how the final PWR shakes out (you can be the #2 overall and still end up with a really difficult environment for that regional final).

So as long as MN is in the top 12 that is all that really matters to me. The most important placement for the team is where they sit come tournament time on that "playing to their potential" arc.

It would be interesting to go back and see how often one of the top four seeds ended up winning the championship. I'm guessing the percentage is higher than you think.

Probably because the best teams tend to get seeded #1. And the best teams are more likely to win championships.

The #1 seed doesn't carry much intrinsic value all on its own; the value is in the teams that earned the seed. So if MN gets dragged down because of the conference it doesn't make much difference. They can bring that value to a #2 or #3 seed just as easily as they can bring it to a #1 seed.

I don't like putting the horse in front of the cart here so early in the season. This is all of course dependent on MN continuing to win and being one of the best teams come April. All I'm saying is that if MN struggles in the national tournament it's not going to be because of their seed.

Agree. It they do this then they WILL be one of the best teams come April and they WILL be one of the higher seeds. If the Big Ten proves to be as weak as it appears right now then those non-conference games against the strongest other teams will take on added significance.

All I'm saying is that if MN struggles in the national tournament it's not going to be because of their seed.

And all I'm saying is that getting a high seed makes getting to the Frozen Four a little easier...just thinking of the odds. If a team is struggling at that time of year they obviously won't do well no matter where they're seeded or what Regional they're assigned to...with what happened in 2006 being the prime example.

Re: Minnesota vs Bye Week: 10/17 & 10/18

If the big ten is as bad as we think, and Minnesota is as good as we think, it shouldn't matter because we should win that many more games.

lol I deleted it as I think that might be tied to post count instead of reputation statistics. Not sure.

It was a gray rep. So yeah, it didn't change anything but someone was seriously butt hurt. Wait, can I say "butt" on here?
