Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

Tonight was a great game.

My thoughts...
-I did not think Bennett played well at all. He got a lot of lucky breaks (it could have been a lot worse) and he looked very shaky.
-Our "fourth" line was amazing tonight (IMO). I liked them much better than our "third" line.
-Is anyone else sick of the refs either taking both players or no call at all? Both ways, players get three or four shots in, the other player holds back but there is no penalty. I see no reward for self control. There are times to take both, but seriously, use some **** discretion and call two penalties when there actually are to penalties.
-I thought Minnesota State played well for stretches tonight. They had control of us for a decent portion of the second period tonight.

-Where's your men's team...classic chant.

-EODS, they ****ing sang Build me up, Buttercup. I thought of you as I fumed.

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

Yeah Bombach is finishing off his college career nicely. He has huge value on that 4th line.

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

I felt nervous with Bennett in goal all night. Luckily UW was clicking on all cylinders and the 8 spot held up.

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

Great game. Like the rest of you, I was pretty nervous about Bennett being at goal but the offense managed to score plenty of goals to keep them ahead so it didnt matter all that much.
Horrible game by Bennett though. He was way above his goals against average (its something like 2.5, I think)
As usual, there were lots of BS calls and non-calls and calls that were way late by the guys in the striped shirts. Not a surprise.
All in all, I thought the Badgers played really well. They had some parts of the game where they were out of sync, missed passes, allowed MSU some easy breakaways, easy shots and missed some easy goals but they also had moments when they were firing on all cylinders and looked great.

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

The "That's debatable..." cheer, which isn't great to begin with, sure was tough to listen to when it got up to the 20th time it was being done.
Hopefully we get a much cleaner series this weekend.

You gotta love the student section for their enthusiam and sense of humor and the refs did call a lot of questionable "contact to the head" penalties. I cant remember the last time I heard them call that penalty so many times.
I loved it when the students started chanting, "warm the bus", "thanks for trying" and "stand up, folks". :D Ahhh, it doesnt get much better than the student section of a Wisconsin hockey game!

Yeah, I thought those were pretty good.
"That's debatable" is a hockey classic, I'm not a huge fan of the two lines that 2/3 of the student section adds after it is all. Especially when you have to hear it 20 times.

Luckily, it is not 2/3 of the student section, just a very...loud select few. Last year it was much worse because there were more people saying it. My group is trying our asses off to try to kill it, don't worry!

I am fine with That's debatable but the additional stuff is just annoying and most of all, not creative. I enjoy the vulgarity and offensiveness of any student section, as long as it is at least creative. Christ, we are college students and we should be able to put some foresight into a cheer!;)

Haha, I'm a student myself. The group of guys I usually go with also usually tries to stop it. I sold my ticket to a friend last night though and sat in the "old people" seats, was different to hear.

Like you said, I have no problem with vulgarity (to a point). I just hate the mindless crap.

That might be my favorite spontaneous chant since "thansk for trying" from Robert Morris a few years back.

As lame as I think the Buttercup stuff is... I have to admit that it always sounded great at football games (where it started... you know because they have to use canend music at CR).

I remember when the follow up was "That's Impossible!" "That's Inconceivable!" "That's Un-Constitutional!" "That's JUST PLAIN WRONG!". That wasn't even that long ago. It's funny how some cheers die completely, then they resurface again- sounding very similar but very different at the same time.

It's tough to stop the inevitable. The more popular the hockey team gets (shoot, I don't even think they sold out the student section season tickets until my sophomore or junior year), the more likely you are to have an increasing number of those special L'n'S students. The ones who got warmed up for the game by taking four shots of Pucker (or shotgunning a can of Natty Ice- which they probably end up placing on the shelf of their College Ct. apartment next to their empty cans of Milwaukee's Best and PBR) and just can't wait for Leckrone to play their favorite Bon freakin' Jovi song during intermission.

You can't change those people. No matter how many times I used to try to change some stuff, it won't happen. (My favorite idea that never happened: turning "Eat ****"/"**** You" into "Tastes Great"/"Less Filling") If it really bothers you like it did to me, my best advice is to just try to come up with the next interesting cheer and pray that it catches on. That's how singing "On Wisconsin" with "sieve" as the only lyric got started.

man I must be getting old. I remember when the original cheer in the football student section was "tastes great" "less filling"....now they've just devolved and the cheers aren't cheers just garbage.

we need to bring back some of those 80's cheers from UW hockey games. they'd sound awesome and fresh now....might actually cause the students to think up some new ones as well.

Ah the 1980's. The years where all UW had was hockey. None of this bouncyball and football getting in the way. :)

Taste great/ less filling still exists. It usually comes after the We Want More (Beer) chant. Only problem is it rather quickly devolves into the FU! / ES! "cheer"

Re: Minnesota State @ UW.... back to indoor hockey.

Notes from the weekend.

I thought Friday's finish was less than stellar. Lot's of standing around after the shorty to go up 4-1, and not a particularly sound defensive effort in the last few minutes. Cannot coast...gotta finish strong and when you've got your boot on a team's throat you cannot allow them to get up.

Geoffrion is the man. He's come such a long way. That kid is always in the mix, always hustling, and he's finishing his chances. He's got a lot of pp goals, but he's been a sniper all season. I am very proud of the way he has worked hard and become a legitimate Hobey candidate.

I am also going to give a shout out to Mike Davies. He's been outstanding. He doesn't dog it like the old days, and he just makes plays. Dangerous on the pp, and he also has been doing a nice job backchecking (yes...I said backchecking).

Lots of defensive goof ups. Everyone was to blame, but I thought Justin Schultz and Ramage had an awful lot of trouble at times.

Bennett looked soft. While he made some decent saves, he let in some bunnies. The "rotation system" might be good for now, but I think Gudmanson is going to be your man in the playoffs and the NCAA's unless he absolutely flops. For my money, he's the go-to 'tender.

Really looking forward to this coming weekend. I think UW can make a serious statement as to whether they are an NC contender or pretender with good play down the stretch. SCSU is a tough out, but UW is going to be fired up with McNaughton in range.

Wisconsin Hockey: Bring It.

His second goal on Saturday amazed me. He is 1-on-1, and when I saw him wind up at the top of the circles, my first thought was, "No, you can beat that lone defender, skate around him an put the puck in the net!". Then I saw that shot he made, and all I could think was "Wow."

I also loved it when one of the MSU players fell down while trying to get the puck behind the Wisconsin goal and the students started chanting, "ice is slippery". Some of the chants are pretty mindless but some of them are just plain great.

I laughed when they were chanting "Where's your men's team?"

Classic.
