Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

You guys do understand that you've hired the Vince Lombardi of the USHL to be your head coach?

In football terms, you kinda have the Art Briles of college hockey there. "Hey, all of a sudden, Baylor is pretty good!".

I'm pretty sure Vince coached football too. Also, is Hastings at least reciprocating with a reach around given all blowj*bs you're giving him on this board?

LOL

I am a big fan of his, having been to probably more Omaha Lancers games that I have, even, UNO games.

I'm not entirely happy he took off for Mankato and didn't want to wait Coach Blais out, who I think stays on until we are in our new arena and not long after that (3 or 4 years?). Our loss is Mankato's gain, unfortunately.

I like Hastings. I did my research on him after he was hired and having connections in the USHL is a good move for us. My concern with him is his staying power. Will he stay at MSU-M with the new look WCHA or bolt for a bigger program, bigger conference in 3-4 years when a job opens up.
But hey for right now Im just happy to see things change. I like Jutting, great guy, but his time here was over a few years ago.

Big weekend for mavs sports, so here's hoping all teams prevail!

MN State was well aware of Hasting's track record, and I assume that was big factor in him getting an interview. Mike is creating excitement around a program that has not seen any type of success for a decade. We'll see if the momentum continues. I am very excited that Hastings has taken the reigns at MN State, but Jutting deserves a lot of credit for the talented Freshmen and Sophmore classes.

While Jutting deserves the credit for recruiting these classes, I am almost certain that he couldn't coach them as well as Hastings will.

Correct, in Latvia, "Gopher" translates to "there aren't enough pucks to share with non-Minnesota born players".
He speaks flawless English in case anyone was wondering. They probably weren't, but hey, I thought I'd share.

He looks like he has so much fun playing the game. I know you could sit here and say everyone does, but watch his body language on te ice. He's the kid who's grown up loving the game and nothing else.

Being in Mankato might end up being a blessing in disguise for him and for you guys.

Somebody is going to rise to the surface and be the big fish in the little pond. I think there are only going to be two or three teams that will be vying for that in the new league makeup on a consistent basis and I think you guys could be one of those teams. To put it as nicely as I can, I think it's going to be easier to become and stay a league power in the nWCHA than it is or will be in the NCHC, for example.

I have wondered for some time if, long term, UNO might not have been better off staying put, for just that reason.

Hastings might want to stay put if he thinks he can win more consistently there than in another conference. I have a sneaking hunch that might have played a part in his thought process of taking the gig there.

I'm not trying to disparage the nWCHA, but, there is no real college hockey superpower in the league starting next season.

I think that's what most of us are hoping happens. The route to a tourney bid will likely be easier year in and year out for us after this season. It'll be interesting to see how things play out.

The challenge will be keeping our Pairwise rating up without scheduling teams that refuse to play home and home series. The WCHA will have their automatic bid and on rare occasions get two teams to the dance. Unfortunately, there will be years where the best WCHA team does not make the tournament.

I really don't think that's going to be as big of a problem as people think it's going to be. The main culprits of that kind of policy are Minnesota and Michigan. Minnesota has already committed to playing more games away from Mariucci with the MN teams (I don't know if the same can be said of MI though). Really though, if you look at it, they are going to have their hands forced. They will have 20 conference games and that leaves 12 games that they need to schedule non-conference. 4 of those are with the MN Cup (or whatever it's called). Now they either need to convince 4 teams every year to take a payday and give up home games (which is going to turn out to be pretty spendy to do that) or they need to schedule home-and-homes. They will NEED to schedule series away from Marriucci.

For schools other than that, they don't have enough leverage to make schools sign one-sided contracts. They will want to schedule "easier" teams which they will perceive to be the WCHA teams and it will keep the pairwise up.

In my opinion, this new league will be more like the ECAC with a couple teams making the NCAA than it will be the AHA and only have one team making it each year. The thing to remember is that while the NCHC looks good right now (and it is) someone has to be on the bottom of the league. All those schools that are traditionally making the tourney are going to have years where they won't because they have locked themselves into a conference that won't allow them to load up on wins and their records won't be good enough to make the tourney.

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

I obviously would love to make more apperances in the NCAA but for me I just wish it had been done against the original WCHA. I hate losing like everyone else but if we are going to have a losing season atleast it mde sense against the like of Denver, Gophs, ND. I like the talent we saw, and i enjoyed the games and even during bad stretches we competed. Theres a part of that I will miss.

But Im also glad we arent moving into the NCHC because that is a death conference for school like ours. And not to mention I get a new list of arenas to travel to

I will miss seeing the talent and having the in state play that we did but I have embraced the new conference (what choice is there, stop following?) and hope that we can compete for tourney spots each year. Bale is correct, some of those like minded schools are going to be under .500 and won't make the tourney. While the conference will be weaker there will still be teams in the conference that will put a couple of good classes together and compete well in interconference play (ie. pwr and tournament play.)

Obviously, I hope that we continue our series with you guys, the only uninterrupted series UNO has had since day 1.

Mankato isn't a bad drive from Omaha at all, just about 300 miles.

With Mike Hastings there, I'd imagine this is a given for the foreseeable future.

While I will also miss seeing some of the higher end teams like DU and CC, I think we're in the minority. DU and CC have historically been among the worst attended series in Mankato. The only thing that has consistently brought fans to games is winning. And then it doesn't who the opponents are.

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Embrace the change. With a new coach, a new, bigger commitment to the program, and a new conference, things should positively change.
