Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

Levy seems to be a real game changer for Minnesota State. Kolstad up front isn't hurting either.

She is leading the team in scoring, hopefully she keeps putting her efforts towards scoring and not injuring the other team's players.

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

What's the story behind how Levy ended up at Minnesota State? Given how good she's turned out to be I would have expected her to get recruited heavily, and (no offense intended) I don't think of MSU as winning recruiting battles very much...

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

If you look at the freshman class as well as future commits, MSU has been winning some recruiting battles.

Their men's team is a real powerhouse this year, showing that it can be done at this school.

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

After letting a 4-1 lead slip by to RMU on Friday to leave with a tie, MSU comes back for the 2-1 victory in the Saturday Matinee. The Mavericks were once again led by the outstanding performance of Levy in net both games. The Mavericks shot out to a 4-1 lead going into the 3rd Friday night with 2 G from Senior Corbin Boyd and 2 G from Freshman Brooke Bryant. The lead was then squandered as MSU spent most of the period in the box. Saturday was a come from behind victory with Goals from Soph. Brittyn Fleming and Rebekah Kolstad. The Mavericks are off to their best start since the 2012-13 season.

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

Was looking forward to watching the Mavericks rise from the cellar this year . . . they started out hot . . . what changed?

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

Um, they're the Mavericks.
Um the Mavericks are No. 5 in the latest men's poll. And pretty amazing that Minnesota Duluth is No. 4 and St. Cloud State is No. 1...three Minnesota teams in the Top 5, but sadly the big school is not one of them. :(

Um, this is the women's hockey forum and that means he was asking about the women's team....but thanks for the useless Information about those men's teams.

Hilarious but "Um . . . they're the Mavericks" was actually more useless. Reading this thread they had a great class of freshmen come in . . . I guess rebuilding takes more than two recruiting classes up there.

My God you are a crank.

No wonder your teammates were whiny.

Um, the whole school has to be excited about the success the men's team is having, and um, they're the Mavericks too. You seem, um, to really enjoy raining on everyone else's parade.

There will be a generation of boys growing up in this state who may end up playing for the plucky underdog Gophers if they can't attract interest from the hockey factories in Mankato, St Cloud and Duluth.

They were 5-0-1 against non-WCHA teams, but haven't done as well in the conference. It is hard to tell if the second half is weaker because they hit a wall, or if the schedule is just more difficult.

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

Two words: scoring defense.

First 15 games, 20 goals yielded (1.33 goals-per-game average), 8-5-2 record.
Next 4 games, 8 goals yielded (2.00 gpg avg.), 0-2-2 record.
Last 10 games, 43 goals yielded (4.30 gpg avg.), 1-8-1 record.

True story! The numbers never lie.
They have improved from last year, 2017-2018 the team had a +/- of -51 and this year they're "only" -16!
Another thing I noticed is that they have zero first period goals in conference. That is a huge in-game moral killer.

I'd bet BOTH! Watched a few games on flo and the announcers consistently speak to how overworked the upper classmen are, they're good players but they had no gas in the tank when they needed them. (wall) They played nobody in their non-WCHA games. (schedule)

MSU looked worn out last night, mentally even more than physically. They didn't show much energy in any facet of the game, and allowed the Gophers to dominate despite kind of mailing it in. Two things in particular that I noticed. The first is that the Mavericks showed no interest in staying out of the box. They were called for seven penalties, almost all of which were both really obvious and pretty dumb. They just didn't have much discipline.

The second was that, down by two goals late in the third period, they never got Levy off the ice for an extra attacker, and didn't demonstrate much urgency to do so. They just looked beaten.

This was the fifth time I've watched MSU play this year, and it was like a different team. I have yet to see them win a game, but previously the effort was obvious and they looked better than the results they were getting. That wasn't true last night.

Re: Minnesota State - turbocharging the Mavericks

They most definitely looked tired. As the season has progressed, they keep doing the same things. No line changes, no powerplay. Keep pushing the upperclassmen out there for every situation thus wiping out their legs for late game efforts.
