Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

Well Miami and WMU can replace Alaska aka UAF and UAA if the schools eliminate athletics via budget cuts...The whole university system is up for a restructure..Board of Regents are to meet again I think in September...

ALSO

Nanook assistant coach Corbin Schmidt tendered his resignation today. His wife too, who also worked for the U. Last week the rifle coach said bye--bye and two more folks in athletics have already left....Maybe they know something......

Well in defense of the rifle coach, he left to go start a craft brewery. Because, beer.

Re: Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

BG would most likely leave the WCHA for the NCHC if offered.

But are we getting an invite? I doubt it. MSU will likely join, we can assume ASU is a member, are the Nachos going to start mailing out invitations if they're at an even number of teams?

It probably depends on how much noise WMU and Miami would make about the conference becoming "west-heavy."

You make it sound like western and miami would have some kind of pull with the NCHC... that's funny. Seriously though, I chuckled.

Re: Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

Coming from the PAC12 and approaching a conference of what will be perceived as 'insignificant' schools, ASU fans are going to get one heckava rude awakening...and it might not end.

Could just be cost cutting moves, younger workforce.

Re: Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

Bemidji builds a new rink to gain admission to the WCHA. Then Minnesota, UMD, St Cloud and Mankato State all screw them. Way to go State of Hockey.

You'd have to be blind as a bat to not see this coming as far back as 2013.

Agreed. As soon as it was reported that ASU was leaning towards the NCHC the writing was on the wall for either Mankato or Bowling Green. Is what it is.

Going to be some uncertainty in the WCHA until the Alaska's figure out what to do with hockey (which will probably be sooner than later).

Style of play is a huge part of it as well. The style Hastings wants to play is a fast transition game which fits the NCHC much better than the "clutch and grab" WCHA.

Definitely. And recruiting. We just saw an NHL draft where Tufte, Cholowski, and Jost went first round. I think Hastings knows that if you want to compete for the very best players, you have to offer them a top notch league. Don't get me wrong - I love the current WCHA. I just don't think you can build a consistent Top 15 team in the league, and that only will get tougher.

I totally disagree with that. I also disagree about the clutch and grab. It's not just the WCHa that does that, and you are going to find that out very quickly.
I think no one gives two ***** about Bemidji of course, and this is about making the costs lower, everyone understands that, but it does hurt the rest of the league.. Attendance won't be any better really and certainly getting a national bid and the cachet that goes with that... well... And so much for like minded teams. That was all fluff to start with.
There are some teams who do things which cost them money for the good of college hockey, but this move is not one of those moves, quite the contrary.

Re: Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

Was. Oil is $45/bbl. That kills state revenue.

It doesn't kill the Fifty-Four Billion Dollars in their rainy-day/savings account. They have plenty of money and cuts are NOTHING except a product of rhetoric; specifically the premise they use called "fiscal conservatism". It's a propagandized meme shoved down Alaskan's throats for 30 years. All that needs to happen for UAA and UAF to be fully funded at normal levels is the will for it to be so.

Re: Minnesota State Applies to the NCHC

Again, BSU should be fine. Sure there's a feeling that all the other MN teams are elsewhere. But I would imagine that BSU will still schedule UMD, SCSU, U MN, MSU and UND. I'm not sure how tough of a schedule the school really wants. The key for BSU is to keep its coaching, recruiting and facilities top notch. Having all the good schools on the schedule but participating in a less than overwhelming WCHA league...the school could do well for itself.

Might. You have to ask yourself how the NCHC can accept ASU without a rink or even a plan for as rink.
