Exhibition game sneaking up on Friday, so figured it was time for a new season thread. Overall, I’m optimistic about the squad. Should be much improved on offense, maybe a little less stout on D and somewhat questionable with reasons to be optimistic in goal.

Heck of a nonconference slate beginning with the return of Hastings. Excited to see the freshmen forward trio of Kraft, Kappell and Christ hit the ice and think the Zetterberg and Somoza have another level they can hit.

On the Chattin' Mavericks Podcast they said the plan is to unveil the 2025 banners during the Tommie game on October 23rd, instead of opening weekend.

Big fan of that

I’m optimistic too. The freshman trio of Kraft, Kappell, and Christ will be interesting to watch, and if Zetterberg and Somoza take another step forward, this team could be a tough matchup all season.

I’m also excited to see Daimon Gardner in a Mavs uniform, great size and he is young for being a senior.

Merrimack's building has the lowest ceiling I've ever seen in a hockey arena! I could see a puck hitting it on a dump out.

Rough trip. The shot count tells most of it: Merrimack outshot you 34-20 Friday and 63-42 over the weekend, and after you took a 3-2 lead Friday they outshot you 9-2 in the third and OT. Saturday was over early, 4-0 after one and then two goals 15 seconds apart to open the second. Syverson gave up 4 on 9 shots before he was pulled, but that one wasn't on the goalies. Good news is it's October and non-conference, with St. Thomas next.

Yeah it ain't good at the moment. D-pairs could use a good shuffle I think, way too many open one-timers and straight up creating offense for the other team by fumbling it around at the offensive blue line. At-large bid probably gone, focus on getting right before league play starts.

The shot numbers back you up. Over four games they've been outshot 130-73: 67-31 by Wisconsin and 63-42 by Merrimack. That's not bad luck, that's spending whole nights in your own end. I wouldn't write off the at-large yet in October, but you're right that the CCHA is the real path now. St. Thomas this weekend is a good test of whether the shuffle works.

And the problem continues; maybe getting worse. It was nice to beat the Tommies, but getting outshot (again) 52-21 in a single game isn't a good thing. Could be a long season.

Yeah, 52-21 is hard to ignore. Lehti stopping 51 of 52 is the only reason that's a win, and giving St. Thomas eight power plays didn't help. At least it looks like they've found their goalie. If they can stay out of the box, it gets a lot easier on him.

I can sleep peacefully knowing we swept the Tommies this weekend. Lehti was out due to injury since game 1 against Wisconsin, but was clearly the missing piece we needed in defense.

Just by the eye test, kind of seemed like there was some Penn-State-esk shot total inflation going on Friday night. It felt like they were getting outshot, especailly in the first, but (to me at least) didn't seem like a 50-shot onslaught. For the most part kept them to the perimeter. I'd still like to see LeGall get some time, hopefully settle into a 2/3 and 1/3 type split with Lehti getting the whole weekend if he plays exceptional on Friday.

And, yeah, need to take fewer penalties, but the PK was solid.

Hope the NCHC likes their shiny new toy that struggles to get 1,000 people to show up for an in-state matchup on a Friday night.
