Minnesota State 2022-23: Life After McKay

MavsFan

Watch out for the bull!
How much should we read into our three untested goalies giving up 7 in Omaha? I guess we'll find out real quick. Gophers, Duluth, St. Cloud. Wow.

Well, that was not a good start to the season.

Not the outcome we wanted, but really I felt like we played well. Gophers had the edge, but it was fairly even.

We have tough game out of the stretch. If we are 2-2 after the first 4 games, I consider that a win.

Since Bally Sports North have made themselves unavailable to so many Minnesotans (they're not on Hulu with Live TV, which is what I have, and most streaming services) I didn't see the game. It's harder to gauge the quality of play listening on radio.

Mavericks had a very shaky first period, probably nerves in their first home game of the season. Early in the second, they had to kill a 5 minute major (checking from behind into the boards,) with 50 seconds of it being 5 on 3. They killed it very effectively, which just ignited them. They controlled the rest of the game, emerging with a 3-2 win over the #2 ranked Gophers. Fun night of hockey in front of a sellout crowd in bustling downtown Mankato.

Rancier got better as the weekend went on, some Freshmen looked good (#3 and #8, obviously, and #7 shows a lot of potential), and Pavel is still the beast he was at the end of last year. I'm much more encouraged than I was at this time last week!

There had to be first-game jitters from everybody, but especially for Rancier, getting his chance to be "the guy."

Nice start to his career for Alex Tracy, with a 16-save shutout of Duluth.

If you told me before the game that six goals would be scored, I would have guessed a 4-2 game with an empty netter.

Not what I expected but really happy about it. Saturday night should be a much closer game.

A bit off topic, but thinking about it since they are giving them away right now. Anyone have some of the old commemorative banners? I'm missing a couple and would be willing to buy them.

Somehow, I didn't get either one they were giving away this weekend. Anyway, I have the 2016 and 2020 WCHA championship mini-banners. That's all I see around here. If I have any others, I don't know where I put them.

Bummer, I'm looking for the 2015 Conference Tournament, 2015 Conference and 2018 Conference ones.

What do we make of last week, and the season so far?
1. Given the schedule and who we lost from last season, I think 5-3 is pretty solid.
2. I am a little concerned about some missing offense. It was good to see Furry get going this weekend, but we still need more scoring as the year goes on.
3. Goaltending is about what we should have expected. We got spoiled by McKay. We could go weeks or months without once saying, "I bet Dryden wishes he had that one back." Now we're like other teams, where we'll probably say that at least once every weekend.
4. I was a little surprised about the undisciplined 3rd period penalties last weekend. The Gregga one from Friday was the most egregious, but the ones on Saturday could have changed that game. That isn't Mav Hockey.
5. Getting Zmolek back would be nice for the team, but even moreso, I feel bad for the kid himself. This has to be frustrating.
6. Tech, Bemidji, and Northern are all looking like strong contenders.

Not only Furry, but Sandelin is off to slow start- at least statistically. It's good that Silye and Morton have filled some of the scoring void left by last year's departures. Hirose has been more of an offensive defenseman this year.

But so far, this team looks like a typical Maverick team. Defense and puck possession. I think the team will continue to improve as the season wears on and guys come back from injury (Zmolek/Tassy). Perhaps a true #1 goalie emerges.

Zmolek was limping again this weekend. I'm certain that earlier I had seen him and he was not limping. I also heard this weekend that it is possible that both Zmolek or Tassy are out for the season. I sure hope that's not the case.

Losing Zmolek for the year would really suck. On the other hand, freshmen defensemen Wheeler and Cichosz are actually doing well.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm good with no more replay. There are 2 referees and 2 linesmen out there. If all 4 missed something, it must not have been that bad.
No more 3 hour games!

Or make major changes to it. Leave replay for goals (and maybe offsides), but eliminate replay for major penalties. None of these calls originally was called a minor. The last 5 minutes of clock time in the 1st period took 29+ minutes of actual time.

I know 2 people who attended that game that had never been to a hockey game before. Don't know what they thought about the game but, I'm guessing they are saying there are many better ways to spend 3 hours.
