Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

gopher wes

Dammit, Gorilla!!
Minnesota travels to Columbus for a weekend series against the Ohio St Buckeyes. Minnesota is coming off of a sweep of Penn St at home and is 10-2 in it's last twelve games since Ohio St put a 8-3 beating on the Gophers at Mariucci Arena. Ohio St, meanwhile, is coming off of a weekend split at Michigan and is 4-5-2 since the last time these two teams met.

Both games will be played at 7pm Central Time and both games will be televised on BTN.

Re: Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

I think at #20 in the PairWise, and being on the outside looking in at the moment, the Buckeyes will have extra motivation to win this weekend, especially since they're at home. I look for a real strong effort from them both nights, right from the opening faceoff. But as long as the Gophers play like they have been playing (especially Schierhorn!) the past few weekends and match Ohio State's intensity they should - at a minimum - earn a split. If the Gophs do get swept then all the positive momentum built up over the last month is lost. It would put the team right back where they were on December 3rd. The coaches should use that embarrassment to get the players' attention.

Players never forget a shellacking like that, but no doubt it will be mentioned at practice. I anticipate close games, maybe OT, but I'm looking forward to another sweep by the Gophers.

I look forward to playing tOSU(sorry, I had to do it at least once:);)), they play up and down/back and forth style that is entertaining to watch.

Like you guys said, hopefully the Gophers remember that embarrassing loss the Buckeyes handed them at Mariucci and exact a little bit of revenge.

I'll say split.

Re: Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

With the Gophers having a shot at a #1 seed they should not lack for motivation to bring it for both games.

Haven't seen the Gophers with this opportunity for a #1 seed in a while. Interesting situation in the PWR with BU and Harvard playing for the BP championship on Monday and the Gophers sandwiched in between them in the PWR. A good showing this weekend against the ranked Buckeyes will most likely keep them in the hunt.

Re: Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

OSU getting swept by the Badgers several weeks back was due mostly to most of the team was fighting the flu. We were just starting to get our rhythm back last week at Michigan.
Being a home game with a lot on the line for the Buckeyes and the Gophers wanting payback it should be a VERY interesting series.
I put the advantage with Ohio State.

Challenge accepted!! ;)

Very important series for both teams and different reasons. It has split written all over it although Ohio state needs a sweep for pwr and any hope to get a bye in Detroit. The gophers are a much better team than they were in December when the buckeyes split with them in Minneapolis.

There's an old adage...when you get a buy stock tip from a taxi driver, its time to sell.

I'm not sure what it means...but its a rare event when Scooby says the Gophers sweep.

Re: Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

That was an intense one but I figured it would be. I was surprised the calls and non calls seemed to go Ohio State's way, normally I feel we're the team the ref's hate.
So either a split tomorrow or Ohio State sweeps. I don't think I have to be Captain Obvious and say how I want it to go.
There will be a LOT of motivation for both teams to pull out all the stops and it should be a barn burner!

Surprised at the individual D lapse by a few Gophers tonight (Lindgren, Sadek, Zuhlsdorf). Who taught them to go down low to defend against an offensive rush? Never...never disable your mobility by coasting back on one knee for a stick block. Block, get outta the way, or take the man out. My choice has always been take the man...put him on his back if you can land one. I didn't see a lot of physicality either at the right time by the Gopher D. Can't blame Schierhorn on three of OSU's goals. Too many mistakes on D and the offense didn't make plays. Recalibrate and pick up a must win tomorrow night.

Re: Minnesota @ Ohio St - 2/10 & 2/11

Gophers didn't seem to come out with the intensity I expected after the way the last game between these two teams went. OSU played better than I expected given their recent record and the Gophs just failed to match there effort for parts of the first and third. Hope they can pick it up tonight. In recent years, winning the B1G didn't seem like much of an achievement, but with the exception of any team with "Michigan" in the name, it is much improved and it would feel good to walk away with 1st again. Gotta see better effort if that is to happen.

Doubt that's the way Guentz draws that one up. Taking the body is always the ideal approach from a third person standpoint, but often as D you're not in position to do that...due to spacing, momentum, body's shifted the wrong way. It was a top scoring senior against a freshman (a good prospect, but a freshman).

Probably not our D's best game. But people often blame the Gopher D for over committing...our defense aids our offense way more than most teams. Its MG's approach. They're looking down the ice, playing aggressively, they go in deep. The D always improves our chances of getting goals. But when they're on defensively they don't get noticed and when they're off, they get noticed. And this OSU team has experienced forwards (as is shown by a second rated GF nationally) - and by hanging 13 goals on us in the last two games.

My question was more rhetorical than anything else. Going low on a offensive rush should never be done at the collegiate level and I'm sure MG didn't take kindly to it. Collins did the same thing last season and got benched. Pace and timing the "bump" takes time to master and often varies according to the offensive player's skill level. But at the very least you have stop staring at the oncoming puck and find a way get your hands on the offensive player, disrupt his flow and skate him off the puck. I thought the D did a great job of boxing out Penn St. players and I didn't see any of the "down low" stick block attempts from Sadek or Lindgren in either game last weekend. Mistakes happen with young players but at this stage every W counts towards a postseason ranking.
