Minnesota @ Notre Dame:11/6 & 11/7

Re: Minnesota @ Notre Dame:11/6 & 11/7

My wife came home while I was watching, and that's the first thing she said!

Gophers got thoroughly outplayed that period. Going to be a long season; just hope they get better as it progresses.

Re: Minnesota @ Notre Dame:11/6 & 11/7

Very disappointing to lose after coming back to tie it up. With the major and the minor at the end, ND sure gave the Gophs a great chance to win it, and it could have been a very bad loss for them after controlling play for most of the game.

Question: What is it with this year's team that they can't get the puck out of their own end for such long stretches of time? Too many guys standing still is one reason.

Losing M. Reilly B Skjei and even B Marshall has really hurt the Gophers D, hard to replace that talent. It is frustrating though, our D's ability to transition and get the puck out clean has been a Gopher tradition for many years, this year so far, not so much.

This has been my biggest concern with the roster. The ceiling for improvement in other areas seems to be pretty high, but the ability of the D to move the puck looks a little limited with the current D corps.

Watching the goals ND scored yesterday, and it's frustrating. A couple that Schierhorn probably should have saved, and that 4th was just really unaware play by both Collins and C Reilly.

Not sure if you watched the whole game but Scheirhorn saved the Gophers' butts about a half-dozen times on what looked like sure goals. He was the only reason why the Gophers had a chance at the end when ND's two penalties gave his team a chance.

If you watch tonight take a look at our players when the puck's in our zone. To me it seems that all too often they get caught standing still in open areas, as if guarding those areas instead of the players on the other team, who all too often are left free to skate and pass the puck around almost at will. And it's not just the D, it's all five guys in many cases. As a team we are simply not working hard enough in the defensive zone. And when the passing breakout isn't there, just chip the puck out off the glass or lob it out. Better than a turnover or giving it right to their D.

I didn't get to see the game, just the highlights. I'm not disparaging Schierhorn, just noting it is frustrating to see those 2 that he probably should have had.

Agreed about the defensive effort by the group, and not just the D. The game-winning goal was mostly on C. Relly, a forward.

Reducing turn-overs by chipping it off the glass is good, but if that is the fallback the majority of time it is not good.

Totally agree. Make a play and keep possession when it's there. But be sure and not at the expense of turning it over, especially when passing through your opponents' prime scoring areas.

Re: Minnesota @ Notre Dame:11/6 & 11/7

SO much better tonight in all phases of the game. I think there is hope for this team. A well deserved victory on the road vs. a ranked team.

Re: Minnesota @ Notre Dame:11/6 & 11/7

So you're saying there's a chance...

:)
Well that depends. A chance at what? Better than a .500 season maybe. But extremely slim chance at NCAA tournament glory, I would say. I did see some signs last night that our freshmen are starting to adjust to D1 level, especially with their decision-making. We'll see if that continues into next weekend.
