Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

How would you feel if you let in 10 goals to Wisconsin? Playing us doubled their offensive output.

Excellent point. It takes a LOT OF EFFORT to give up that many goals to a team that spends 99.9% of their time in the neutral zone when they're on offense.

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

It might not be the weekend for a kid to watch to learn about positioning and commitment to defensive play, but it has the potential to be very entertaining, at least.

Keep in mind 4 of those goals were on the PP. The usually good PK (88%) was AWFUL as was the goaltending. Still, 6 goals even strength- including an EAG during a delayed call is an abomination to a team struggling to win.

Isn't UMi 8-3 or something? Stop sandbagging Blue fans it's unbecoming of Puffy Chest U.

Uh, no-no- Slap you can't have it both ways, being arrogant and oh for the last almost 20 years without a NC doesn't make us the puffy chest program in the B1G. :D

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

Just catching up on this thread, and am trying to decide which team's fans deserve to take the Little Brown Sandbagging Jug. Reading the pregame analysis here, should I expect high scoring games, like traditional Big Ten football, something like 10-7?

Somewhere in the ballpark of the score of the football game this year, probably.

That's assuming Racine is still out. If Racine is back, I think I can have a tiny bit of confidence. As of right now, lol no.

Mind you, he's the starter not because he's a shutdown goalie, but he gives up the less goals. He still can have pretty bad games, but you rather keep him the starter all year and have guys come in in relief than have those relief goalies start.

This past weekend showed why.

I should be confident about this weekend.

Should.

No chance. Nope. Not with that defense and careless play on the defensive end.
Yeah, but the Gophers don't like defense either AND they take dumb penalties. That seems like a good combination for a Michigan team that can put the puck in the net at a rather high rate.

So here we are, all trying to shore up the levy, basically predicting football scores.

Which naturally means one game should be 1-0.

That's how one of the games turned out last year at Mariucci if I'm not mistaken. After a pair of high scoring affairs earlier in the year at Yost I think we all expected a couple more similar games when Michigan came to town. After a Gopher romp on Friday I think we ended up with a closely contested 2-0 game with an ENG to seal it for the Gophers.

I fully expect 4 goalie games.

As far as I know, I realy don't know much about the current team, he is still out. I believe that they're hoping for a GLI return...

You'll never go broke betting the under in college hockey, but last year, Minnesota had Brady Skjei for that second series, and Michigan didn't have much offense beyond their first line, which meant Michigan wasn't going to score much in that second series. This year is different on both counts. There's always the chance Schierhorn stands on his head or Michigan's goalie has an above average game for a game this weekend though.

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

Skjei and Collins (so... mostly Skjei) shut down Larkin in both games at Mariucci if I remember. Pretty crazy considering he is ripping up the NHL.

Good memory, Bonin21! I saved the line charts and Skjei and Collins were definitely paired together for that series. And when I think of how much Skjei improved over the course of his career with the Gophers I'm hoping we see more of the same with respect to our younger D.

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

When Dylan Larkin is being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame 30 years from now, has his number retired for the Wings, people will be saying "How did Michigan have him and not make the tournament?!"

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

Or he'll be the answer to "How did a team with Brennan Serville in their top-4 D come within one game of making the NCAA Tournament?"

Re: Minnesota @ Michigan: 12/11 & 12/12

I'm interested in seeing how this plays out tonight, even though it's a lose-lose situation for me as sadly, I don't see how both teams can end the weekend with zero points. But based on last week's games, which is the only times I've seen Michigan play, the whole thing comes down to how many times the gophers give up the puck in the neutral zone. Michigan's high powered offense has been touted, but last week they really weren't very good with actual in-zone offense and couldn't generate much. And obviously were not good in their own zone. But they are a freight train going from one zone to the other. It seems to me that the gophers should just skate every puck out carefully and the wolverines should actually pull the puck back out and set up again after each failed rush. Neither of those things will happen of course, that's just silly. But what will happen?

So how many more than 12 goals did we need to score to be considered good?
