Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

Gore,(while Wis was on the PP) "Wisconsin, trying to score" followed by several seconds on silence. Not sure what informed me more, that comment that Wisconsin was actually attempting to score, or the one about "In college, they play THREE periods in hockey". Hope I never have to watch another game with that pair.

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

His expertise is tennis, Ken Schott took him to task on his blog.

Oddly, I myself posted a link to that very article on the previous page.

Here's a good read by Ken Schott on the quality of the Worldwide Leader's fabulous announcing crew.

It's ok though, Gore was so terrible it deserves to be repeated. :)

Anybody wants to catch a replay it can be seen here: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/sport/hockey/type/replay/

I strongly suggest using mute.

Edit: I should add, I felt a little sorry for Ritchlin (the color guy) who would have probably been fine. I can imagine the inner panic he was feeling as the game went on. He at least tried to make a go of it, but Gore was a nightmare

Glad I was at the game and didn't have to listen then.

Also I didn't think it was as empty as some are making it to be, the crowd was late arriving like always, but filled up by the middle of the 1st. Question for those that go to Mariucci frequently - Why don't we show replays on our nice new shiny scoreboard? Annoying that they don't.

Complain as I did....https://r.espn.go.com/members/contact/tvindex. That was the worst play by play call in the history of mankind.

Bench minor.....For all the whining coaches do, you NEVER see a bench minor called. I'd love to know what Eaves said and if it was so over the top that he deserved it. Who were the prior employers of these refs?

No one is talking about one of the highlights of the game....when the 2 rodent players absolutely crushed eachother behind the WI net in the first period, just lit eachother up. That was awesome. I thought they could have called charging on that. A penalty is a penalty you know.

Yeah, teammates colliding is gonna happen with an up-tempo playing style.

Not that Badger fans would be familiar with that style of hockey.

Thanks Tim, I actually did this. (which I never do) Here are my remarks:

I have never before in my life written to complain about a broadcast but feel compelled to do so after watching this disastrous production. What could possibly have possessed ESPN to put Sam Gore on the air for this game? It's was blatantly obvious from the start that he has absolutely zero hockey knowledge, and I seriously question whether he's ever actually watched a game before being thrown in the booth. Additionally, I strongly question whether he even bothered to read the press guides available on either school's website prior to the start. Two of the most storied programs in college hockey meeting in the first ever Big 10 hockey game and this is the best the "worldwide leader" could come up with? It was insulting to the Big 10, damaging to the growth of college hockey, and (I hope) extremely embarrassing to ESPNU. Either provide competent personnel or leave college hockey to networks that care about the product they are putting out.
Even Ritchlin deserved better.

I came on here to say that exact thing. You can't make that stuff up. By the way, did you guys know that in Minnesota they do hockey the right way, from the youth leagues all the way up through high school? I learned that too. Twice.

Well played, sir!

I learned when the score was 3-1 that that was the temperature in downtown Minnesota.

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

The first thing I took away from the broadcast was " Why is some dude from California doing a Minnesota game?" Also, the midwest guys should really start a petition to ban the "Farmers Only DotCom" commercials, it only adds to the **** kicker stereotype.

.

Brian Aaron was a much beloved official in the CCHA. Here's what (Tech coach) Mel Pearson had to say last year after a game Aaron worked:

"I'm glad I'm out of the CCHA," said Pearson, who was an assistant at Michigan from 1988-2011. "I'm going to say it. If I get fined, I don't care. It was atrocious. I'm going to call (CCHA director of officials) Steve Piotrowski. Even their coach (NMU's Walt Kyle) said to me after the game, 'You should be happy you're not in the league.' He was referring to the refereeing. It was, let's just say it was not good and I'll stop at that."

This came the week after Jeff Jackson was suspended and fined for complaining about CCHA officials. Jackson's subsequent remarks when asked were, "Nope, just looking forward to going to Hockey East"

Obviously I didn't like the officiating last night. But let me be clear in saying that IT'S NOT WHY WE LOST. My comments have nothing to do with that. I wouldn't have liked it either if the calls had gone against the Goph's early either. (ok, well-- perhaps slightly more, I admit.) But the game I wanted to see was the Badgers employng their forecheck and rolling lines. That is where we are going to be at our best. Gopher fans point out that the Goph's are an unstoppable machine 5x5 and we were better off.... Great, that may very well be accurate and we may get waxed like that. But that's the game I want to see; Badger's doing what they do best, Gopher's doing what they do best. Isn't that the game we all want to see? Not a whistlefest for a period and a half. Let 'em get out and play and may the best team win. Here's hoping.

I thought he said, when it was 2-1, that he thought that was the high in the Twin Cities yesterday. (I saw at least 36 degrees on one thermometer.) So not only was it a stupid statement, it was incorrect too. (And it is too bad that the best conversation we can have following the game is about the bad commentary, and not about an entertaining game. I mean the best thing, other than that the Gophs won!)

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

Blame ESPN. They put a guy in the situation that he wasn't built for. He's probably a quality announcer in his normal gig. ESPN is the one that deserves the ire.

Beautiful. Yours is nearly identical in sentiment and content to mine. Yours is more eloquent and detailed, though. I hate agreeing with you.Go away.

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

It's rare that something comes up that Wisconsin and Minnesota fans are unanimous in agreement about, but the complete debacle that was the coverage of last night's game breaks through and unites us (for a little while, at least).

Definitely go to the link provided earlier and add your feedback.

After watching the broadcast of the first ever Big Ten hockey conference game between Minnesota and Wisconsin, I find myself writing to complain about a broadcast for the first time in my life. While I've been disappointed in previous broadcasts on various channels, never have I run across such a complete failure to assign a competent play by play announcer.
Sean Ritchlin was okay as a commentator, but Sam Gore was very clearly completely and utterly unprepared for the game, and incapable of being the announcer for a hockey game.
Most astoundingly, ESPN HAS several very good hockey announcers, none of whom were assigned to this game. John Buccigross or Steve Levy not being selected for the inaugural Big Ten game completely baffles me and indicates a complete failure of management to provide a quality product.
EPSN owes a huge apology to the teams involved, the Big Ten conference and fans everywhere for this complete failure of game coverage.

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

I am to lazy but what channel is the game on today? FSN or BTN?

Re: Minnesota hosts Wisconsin: 11/29 & 11/30

At the beginning of the game he announced that Minnesota was in read and Wisconsin was in white. It was all downhill from there.

I mean this in the least hyperbolic way possible: It was literally that soon in the game when I started to wonder how much better the average USCHO poster could've been at calling that game compared to Gore.

Poor SOB, I wonder what he did to deserve being thrown in there like that. I'm with Hammy in that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he's good at his normal gig, and ESPN must've been angry at him (or something...) to force him into a scenario where he had to cover a sport that wasn't the one he's trained in and knowledgable about.

This and a shared disdain for all things Michigan which will surely grow with the new hockey conference.
