Minnesota hosts Michigan State: 1/15 & 1/16

Re: Minnesota hosts Michigan State: 1/15 & 1/16

Given MSU did so well in the Big Ten last season and some of those players returned, the Spartans slump is a surprise to me. I'm curious to know your opinion on what the main issues are with the coaching staff and the team? Thanks.
The coaching staff has no clue what the hell it's doing and the players stopped caring about a month ago.

Sprinkle in some early injuries and having only five scholarship defensemen on the active roster, and you get what we have now.

I fully expect a Minnesota sweep. It probably won't be as ugly as the Michigan series, but I don't expect good things.

What a great crowd at Mariucci. Just think what it would have loked like with Bemidji or Duluth. Yeah...BigTen hockey...woo hoo!!!

Re: Minnesota hosts Michigan State: 1/15 & 1/16

The Gophers took advantage of turnovers, and some poor D coverage by Sparty for a 5-2 W. I thought MSU showed some good puck movement at times in front and they did hit the post twice. But Kloos popped one in early from the puck drop at :21 and the Gophers dominated play with a lead throughout the game. Good PK tonight (or inept MSU PP) allowing only 3 SOG for Sparty PP in 6 PPA. Fasching has found some needed consistently in scoring than in his two previous seasons with 2 goals tonight in his sweet spot around the paint. Overall, a solid win for the Gophers which puts us in a tie for 1st with Mich in the Big Ten and 17th in the PWR.

Bad PP for MSU. Granted the Gophers were pretty good on the PK. But MSU makes it to easy for the defenders. I got the stopwatch app open on my phone, one MSU PP late in the second, MSU had a total of 12 sec's of puck control in the Offensive zone. That right there is one of the stories of the season.
MSU has the great ability of not being able to get anyone in front of the net.

We will see what disaster awaits the Team from Sparta tonight.

Not that the Gophers were great on the power play last night either. Zero shots on two PP chances - not exactly what you would call stellar.

I was a bit surprised at Hildebrand's play too. He's not the same poised goaltender with the fast glove we saw last season who led the conference in every goaltending category en route to Big Ten Player and Goaltender of the Year honors.

I noticed at least 4 excellent scoring chances for MSU that either missed the net, hit the pipe, were shot into Schierhorn's pads, or he made the save. An MSU player had a nice breakaway and missed the net, MacEachern dinged a rocket off the pipe, another MSU player had an open side and Schierhorn made a brilliant save on it, etc. Sometimes you need a few breaks to gain momentum and right the ship. MSU couldn't catch a break last night. Personally I think morale on MSU seems down, inc. Hilde and then every mistake is huge. If they get a few bounces and put a couple wins together that can go a long way in building some confidence. But just don't start tonight. ;)

There were a number of times where they were in position to set up a great scoring chance but they just couldn't couldn't complete the play...errant pass, slow pass, bobbled puck, etc....that looks like a team that is lacking confidence.

And how about the D zone play on that first goal, 25 seconds into the game? That goal looked shockingly easy for the Gophers.

If there were 5,000 at the game last night I'm Mickey Mouse. #b1gwho

Hey Mickey, how ya doing?

There weren't 5k at the start, or the end, but way more than that in 2nd period.

And, hey USCHO has them at 16 in pwr now, how 'bout that?
