Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

How did Bristedt look?

From Jason's column today:
"Freshman Leon Bristedt got extra time with different line combinations to make up for future missed ice time. Bristedt will miss the opening weekend fulfilling an NCAA penalty associated with his participation with his junior hockey team in Sweden. Rau thought Bristedt looked sharp in his debut."

I would agree. I went to the game and was looking for Bristedt the whole game. The first couple of shifts, he was somewhat tentative. Then he seemed to move around and by the last shift of the period he was flying.

My guess is that he'll be better than 80% of typical freshman forwards. Based on his prior performance, I'd say he has the potential to match Kloos...and in his first game, he didn't dispel that. Rau had the scoring touch, but I'd say Kloos was the best skater on the ice. Glover looked pretty good, I didn't notice Collins.

Thoughts about how the team looked from anyone who was there or watched the stream? To be honest I thought they would win by more than five.

They easily could have. There were several pipes and the Ooks goalie made some big stops.

Thanks for the updates from those who were there!

So what is the deal for this weekend? I'm too lazy to look, are there any pay options available to catch these games? I'm usually not about paying to watch games online, but it's Gopher Hockey season, darn-it.....I got the itch!

It appears that not even an internet stream is available. Hope I'm wrong and something pops up at the last second. Otherwise it's Gametracker.

If the Gophers end up playing Notre Dame, the game will be streamed on NBCSN, but I don't believe there are any streaming options for the UMN vs UMD game.

Wally and Frank will be my best friends if no internet stream becomes available.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Did they get tested at all?

Wilcox made a nice save on an ook breakaway, and flashed the glove another time for a nice save on an ook player, other than that he didn't have too many opportunities. Coyne looked decent for the small number of times he had to make a save against the ooks. Lehr probably had the least of the opportunities to make a save, much of the 3rd period was played down in the ook zone.

ook is a funny word to me btw. :)

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Was at the game and thought about a few things:
* Bristedt looked really good, especially late in the game. Was flying around, being in the right space, got back on D a few times, and was working to make stuff happen.
* Glover looked good and fluid. Appears to have a cannon for a shot and never looked out of place.
* Collins looked like a little slow. His skating skills were not on par with the rest of the team. Could be nerves, or something else. Not sure.
* Lettieri looked really strong all night. Probably better than I though he looked all last year.
* Cammarata looked terrible. Wrong positioning more than once, and generally looked lost on the ice.
* Fasching went off the ice at some point in the game and never returned. Don't know if that was planned or if he got dinged.
* Hogland looked pretty good. Nice play on the assist and was a pretty fluid skater.

Other than that, they were really loose in the 1st period and Wilcox bailed them out more than once. Coyne and Lehr looked fine, they just didn't have to make any big saves.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I agree with your thoughts on the game.

I believe Fasching got dinged up and didn't return, wasn't serious I don't think just a precaution and we had like 27 guys down on the bench. :)

I thought both Glover and Johnson looked very good on D as freshman, and Bristedt took a period or so to get going but by the 3rd he was zipping around and looks to have a nose for the net.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

I didn't see Cammarata as looking bad. I thought he was fine, esp for his first game.

He's a playmaker (rather than a brute ala Fasching or scorer ala Rau) and that's a talent set that will just take a month or so to work out. I have little doubt he and Kloos will be one of the top stories for the team this year.

What was the deal there? He wanted to play with his old team just one last time and got him suspended for a weekend?

Who is going to be the upper classmen who get left out because of the freshman getting regular spots? Michaelson probably. Anyone else?

No, I'm sure unbeknownst to him, he played in a game last year that had a paid player in it. The NCAA took two days out of his eligibility for that.

Probably nobody. I haven't done the math, but I think there's enough spots for everyone to play. Defense is where the problem is. I believe we have 8 strong players for 6 spots (3 of which our freshman which can use ice time as they're our future):

Glover
Collins
Reilly
Brodzinski
Bischoff
Marshall
Johnson
Skjei

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

We have 15 forwards, so three of the following would play:
Bristedt (most likely to play every night)
Michaelson
Isackson
R. Reilly
Hoglund
Rogge
I mentioned it a while ago but I hope Michaelson and Isackson prove me wrong this year. I like R. Reilly's effort. At D it's just ugly. I was nearly murdered when I suggested moving a certain someone up to forward because of the D logjam and talent relative to the players above lol.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Will be good to have competition at both forward and D, will be interesting to see who wins out.

Isackson has never impressed me, I would take Michaelson over him any day. Though thats not to say Isackson couldnt break out and be a decent college hockey player, we'll see.

Bristedt I would think would be a lock for ice time, after that up in the air.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

US NTDP without a single Minnesotan?? Something wrong there. Although I can't complain about guys sticking around to play HS. Were there any/many that turned down the opportunity?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: 2014-2015

Not a terribly strong 97 class that I can think of, especially two years ago. If Auston Matthews wants to come here, I'd say we can adopt him as Minnesotan like we did Vanek...

Look at icebreaker thread for link for first game, Or GPL, apparently (but I haven't looked there for a few days).
