Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

He just turned 22 about two weeks ago, so according to the new CBA had to sign a two year deal instead of the typically 3 yr. deal for 18-21 yo. Haula inked a nice chuck of change in his contract. Even though he was chosen in the 7th rd. in 2009, apparently he got the salary max...$900,000 with games played and performance bonuses if he's called up from Houston.

Podcast interview with Eric Haula.

So we're down:

Bjugstad
Haula
Schmidt
Budish
Alt
Helgeson

Five of six early. But I'm thankful we got junior seasons out of this group of guys.

Saw a tweet that Jared Larsen has also left the program. No details in who/where. ..

Still got the quick trigger finger. Only won that one by a hair........
Larson was known for almost a week now. Vannelli will be coming in. Bischoff is a maybe, but seems unlikely.

We've got a great recruiting class coming in so we'll be young, but extremely talented. Hopefully they'll be more consistent. Bjugs had a decent season, but not outstanding. I was hoping he'd perform at a higher level in his final season. Not trying to throw Bjugs under the bus, but in similar fashion to 2011-12, he really didn't show up in big games when we needed him the most.

That's the way I look at it. We easily could have lost half that list a year earlier, so I think it's a testament to the program turning back around that there were so many high-end juniors this year.

You'll have a talented squad for sure, and I bet they have some really impressive games and weekends, but consistency may be asking too much. Consistency and underclassmen don't often go hand in hand. The Gophers will probably be the last team anyone wants to see in a one and done format, but struggle bc of an off day

Minnesota had a strange roster, with a huge junior class and one senior. While no one likes losing underclassmen, in a strange way this brings more balance back to the roster in terms of seniors, juniors, etc...

I'm more pessimistic than you. I don't see how losing some potential Seniors with major skills (not that I expected them to stay, other than Alt) from a team that was already very young makes them more balanced. When it comes to age, older is better in most cases for college sports..bigger, stronger, smarter, more consistent. If a young team gets hot right at the end of the year, they can go on a tear, although the 2 week break between rounds in the NCAA tends to un-do momentum. I agree with SCSU Euro's post. Consistency is unlikely, and unfortunately, there will be more risks for early departure after next year. Team's with the potential this year's team had come by rarely, so it hurts to have the early finish and early departures, regardless of how good your incoming class is. I am guessing none of them will have a Vanek like impact.

Vannelli will be coming in.

I'd seen this before in posts, but never saw the source. Did Lucia say this somewhere? And was it said they would bring in an eighth D as well, or does that all depend on who they could get?

Maybe. Or maybe it was just a testament to the character of these players and the circumstances of the NHL teams that drafted them.
