Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Will Connor Reilly make an impact this year? Is he fully healthy?

Just curious about what he can bring to the lineup when healthy, is he a top 6 type of forward?

I see he will turn 22 in October so he's not a young "Freshman", always a plus.

If he has a 25 goal campaign I can say he will sign a FA contract with the NHL.

More info on the junior evaluation camp from Gophersports:

http://www.gophersports.com/blog/2013/08/eyes-on-sweden-four-gophers-make-cut.html

USA Hockey trimmed the National Junior Evaluation Camp roster from 44 players down to 31 earlier this morning with four Gophers making the cut for the final week of camp.

Defensemen Brady Skjei and Michael Brodzinski and forwards Taylor Cammarata and Hudson Fasching are among the players who made the cut and will take on Canada (Sat.), Finland (Thurs.) and Sweden (Wed.) later this week.

"The whole point is for us as a staff to have the best evaluation and the best reads on these kids at the end of the week. Even though some kids are getting sent home doesn't mean they aren't candidates to make the team," Lucia said. "Certain guys have played their way to a spot to be kept and other guys we just want to get a better read."

That means if he stays 4 years he will be a 26-year-old senior. When's the last time the Gophers had a player that old? Steve DeBus?

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

As always, the Gophers have a lot of talent coming in. One of the real benefits Gopher fans have is being able to look forward to seeing some serious new talent each year. At goal and forward, especially, first year players can excel and make a real difference in the team's success.

Of course, they will always be Gophers, but a fair number have managed to overcome that flaw in the past.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Watched the USA World Junior team clobber heavily favored Canada 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2013 World Junior Evaluation Camp. USA's special teams and some superb goaltending by Jon Gillies (Providence) were the difference in the game, scoring 3 PP goals and adding a shorty in the second period. The real highlight on special teams was the penalty kill, which was perfect in shutting down Canada's PP advantage 8/8 times.

Both Gopher players, sophomore Brady Skjei and freshman Hudson Fasching, were frequently on the PK together throughout the game. Fasching is an impressive power forward and picked up a nice assist on a rink ice pass to another one of DU's Shore brothers, Quentin Shore. Hudson Fasching impressed me as a very strong skater with a powerful stride, he's not afraid to use his size to dig along the walls and corners and hang tough in front of the net, overall a good two way player, excellent full ice vision and showed good stickhandling and playmaking ability. A very promising frosh power forward for the Gophers next season.

This college hockey tourney over time might be the best played.

There's been some amazing WCHA F5 games over the years that will be hard to eclipse; and I'm sure many fans will still miss it for a while. But I'm excited about this B1G tournament. New rivalries will form, old rivalries will be reignited and the B1G will eventually add a couple more teams too. I agree this tourney will be at least as good or if not better than the F5.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Offesason Thread: Back To 1896

Now if you could just get more than two good teams. :)

B1G's inaugural season will be comprised of good teams with lots of scoring potential.

1) The Gophers have huge scoring potential, a strong D, excellent goaltending;
2) The BADgers have most of their top scorers returning (approximately 80% scoring) and good frosh recruits (i.e. Besse/2013 MN Mr. Hockey);
3) Michigan has 8/10 top scorers returning;
4) Michigan State had a rebuilding year in 2012-13 with one of the largest freshman classes in D1 and has 86% of their scoring returning;
5) Penn St. returns most of their players while adding some size and strength to the blueline. They'll most likely be a .500 team, but I think they'll surprise some very good teams next season (19 of their games are against teams that have reached the Frozen Four since 2009);
6) Ohio St. has a new head coach (former asst. Steve Rohlik) and all of their top 10 scorers returning, including 2012-13 CCHA scoring leader Tanner Fritz, as well as two other top 10 scorers from the CCHA last season.

Is that your predicted order? If so there is no way OSU finishes below PSU.

You'll probably have to drive to North Dakota or Manitoba for decent puck. You Canadian friends will understand that.
