Minnesota Gophers 2024-25

Must have got more NIL money than she would have got paid in the PWHL. Or she's not quite done with her BA yet. 🤣
she'll be finishing this coming week, don't you worry a bit!

And would you turn down $70-100k* to play college hockey, take some easy and maybe even fun classes or earn a free masters to compliment your free bachelors? How much does Taylor Heise make?

*allegedly OSU was waiving around tall stacks of cash to certain people in the portal or people they wanted to get in the portal. I've heard multiple figures in that range so the truth is in there somewhere. See also: Malachino, Kaia.

I get the sense OSU will continue to pay their coaches well and wave around NIL money because it’s cheaper than building a rink. That will absolutely be the fade away of the program. Always needs to be said.

By fade away I mean probably still top ten as long as Muzerall is willing to work insanely hard at recruiting and coaching but winning it all is going to be tough. Not impossible because she’s a heck of a coach and the school academically has everything you’d want but geez just build a rink.

I am looking forward to enjoying the new arena at St. Thomas. After 'the' Ohio State team visits us here it will be fascinating to speculate about their thoughts when they return home.

she'll continue to get the 1-year "rent-a-player" types, especially from eastern schools without many graduate program offerings (like Colgate or Providence for instance) who want to take advantage of the chance to earn a free MA/MS/etc from a reasonably prestigious institution.

I always think about her comments after their first Championship where she said something like "We have the worst, the absolute worst, most pitiful arena in D1 Hockey. It's disgusting. And our AD has promised me we're his final mission before he retires! It's really going to happen! Finally! But also we don't need a nice arena, I'd rather have the kids who don't care about that."

Narrator: Gene Smith retired June 30th, 2024. THE® Ohio State does not have a plan, nor a conception of a plan, to build a new arena anytime soon.

It’s true Steamboat! My little town is going through this as we debate building new schools and athletic facilities. my kids play travel softball and baseball and you go to various communities and see the facilities and it really gives you something to think about.

as for 18 being back imo the very best thing that could happen for her is a year of tough love from the coaches. She’s one of the best players in the world AND she’s entertaining in non hockey ways which makes her pretty marketable post college. She should be a better teammate, period. Dumb penalties put w’s at risk and cause teammates to lose ice time. Come on, show some growth in your sixth year!

She really has not "continued" to do that. Only one incoming transfer, who is not a "one year rental" (two years eligibility remaining). And eight incoming freshmen. Which makes sense, with players with extra COVID years having come and gone.

The only "one-year rentals" looking for a masters, etc., going forward are going to be those who took a red-shirt or have a medical hardship year available. And those will be nowhere near as 'plentiful' as they were during and immediately after COVID.

As we - and she -knew she would have to, Muzerall is reverting back to a standard 'freshmen recruit' model for building a team. No more 'portal queen", as was always going to be the case.

only her fifth. She actually has a lot fewer PIM than she did in 23-24, though worse than in 22-23.

whatever will the OhSU posters crow about....since the arena doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon...

Reasonably prestigious institution. 🤣

It’s her 5th year at Minn plus she did a year with Team USA.

So going into her sixth year of post high school hockey, quantitatively her penalty minutes may be down. Judging by her five minute major in the NCAA Tournament, qualitatively they are as dumb as ever, possibly getting dumber.

We're a year in advance of this but a good test case for players leaving college eligibility on the table will be Sarah Paul. Theoretically, she would have two years remaining after a November 2021 injury that cost her that season and the following one. I would expect that she, conservatively, would be a top 10 pick if she declared in 2026. The only two players to go for the draft early have been Julia Gosling and Kayle Osborne, both Canadian, both at schools where the graduate programs are very limited. Minnesota doesn't have that issue—and it's possible Paul will already have a bachelor's degree from Princeton. I think that's worth monitoring at the conclusion of next season from a variety of angles.

Shhhhhhhh...that's inside information, wink wink, because top officials regularly meet with fans to share insight, wink wink, and swear them to secrecy, wink wink.
eating too many Buckeyes again. And I mean the poisonous nut, not the delicious candy treat.
Reasonably prestigious institution. 🤣
Ohio University: 1803
Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College: 1870

Who'd win in a fight? Rufus the Bobcat defeats Brutus the Buckeye by referee's decision.

besides, we all know that truly prestigious public institutions have the land-grant applied and basic (non-applied) research missions concentrated at one institution* with a mandate to spread it all across the state.

*my non-hockey playing, non-land grant state flagship Alma mater is the sole exception to this rule.

It really Ikes me that women's sport is not taken as seriously as the men's. You look at millions of dollars spent across the country for facilities that males are playing in. Then you watch the PWHL players playing the toughest level of women's sport for a pittance compared to the men.
If you look at other sports, specifically tennis, you have Andy Murray supporting the women for equal pay. He said they train as hard, and play as hard as the men, they deserve the same payment for their efforts. And here in America we have the University of North Dakota dropping the women's hockey team without even the curtesy of a short grace period to warn the players about the termination.
I don't see a change of attitude anytime soon, but I hope that justice gets done in the long term.
