Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

THOUGHTS:
Haula had a very good game and Condon showed intensity last night. Boyd looked pretty intense as well, looking especially good on the PK. He is turning into a great PK player. Would like to see them press more and create some SH opportunities with the speed they have.

I am disappointed the first line doesn't seem to be pushing more. They seem to be relying on skill plays rather than trying to just overwhelm the other team.

And the back-checking pressure needs to intensify. It wasn't that the team was loaded with stellar D-men last year that made them such a good defensive team. It was that the forwards back-checked so intensively and their aggressive forecheck meant they possessed the puck more. If they can regain their intensity from last year, the D will improve.

M Reilly looks great with the puck, but not always great without it. Although he has made some poor decisions on the PP. I don't think my dream of him being the the next Rookie LeLeggia will happen. Skjei looked pretty solid most of last night. And I still can't believe people were arguing Alt would be better than Schmidt. Schmidt is a stud.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Tough split, but I don't mind the hiccups at this point in the season. Conference points are important, but I'd rather get these games out of the way now. I wouldn't mind if this team pulled a slight UND and laid some eggs in the first half here before turning it on down the stretch. I think they will get their act together, but we'll see.

I'm starting to think more and more that this team misses Matson, like Harley was saying. There doesn't seem to be a ton of leadership on this team.

Anyone else see Isaackson slowly moving down the ranks until he is out of the lineup again? He hasn't shown much of anything since those exhibition games(and Michigan St, but I still say that series is a little fluky and it's hard to say how good MSU really is at this point).

Lastly, you guys can rip Holl all you want, but I thought he looked pretty darn good at F this weekend and he was working his tail off. I'm not saying it's a permanent solution, but he has looked more comfortable at F than Marshall or Parenteau IMO.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

I think they miss Matson Hansen and Sachetti, key pieces to the 2nd 3rd and 4th lines who are being replaced by Ambroz, Freshman or D playing forward right now. That transition hasn't been smooth.

Turns out the Gopher hockey team IS the best team in college hockey - but it's the women's team, not the men's.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Total goals for and against through 12 games: 72-7!

Maybe the guys should go watch one of the Women's games to see how it is done. I am guessing there isn't a lack of intensity in the Women's game.

A word to the wise of our beloved Gopher team (the men's team ;)):

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit. -Aristotle

Made the same point on Twitter during the game and I 100% agree.

The guys could learn something from the ladies.

And what college guys don't want to watch ladies? (And what were you implying they could learn?)

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

How the **** are the Gophers still ranked 2nd?

Now I still think this team is likely to be right there at the end of the season. The last few weekends have been lackluster to say the least, but I also know that expecting to roll through conference play, even against teams that are probably going to be finishing in the bottom half, is pretty foolish. That's not how the WCHA has worked for as long as I've been watching it. Hell, last year the Gophers were swept, had a long stretch of splits, and still won the league. BC looked nothing more than above average at Christmas time. UND seems to sputter along through the first couple months every year and somehow always earn a #1 or #2 seed regardless.
So I'm not running around in circles crying that the sky is falling.

...BUT...

This team has certainly NOT played like the #2 team in the nation so far. I don't think polls mean a **** thing in reality (especially at this point in the season), but I also don't know how anyone could slot the Gophers at the #2 spot. And considering MN didn't get ANY first place votes, that means almost everyone who voted had them down as the second best team in the country.

If it makes you feel any better, Tech Hockey Guide has them 4th in the WCHA

What they could learn is to play with heart and full effort every minute. And to cover their man (woman) in the defensive zone - not puck watch. Having an all-world player in net would help too.;)

Maybe he would want to watch the ladies as long as they are wearing appropriate clothing of course, you know turtle neck sweaters and baggy sweat pants.

Perhaps he would enjoy watching them actually as hockey players are generally completely covered up. Other than their neck, face and ears, you can't really see anything. Most importantly the boobage is covered completely. On the other hand a rogue ankle could make an appearance if the shinguard moves a bit and the player isn't wearing socks. That could be disastrous!

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

A few weeks back, I made a comment about how terrible Mike Reilly looked on defense. More than one other person jumped to his defense saying it was Alt who was leaving him hanging out to dry on several occasions. I have to say, after the past few weeks, I couldn't agree more with whoever was saying that. Reilly looks actually pretty decent. Still a few rookie mistakes but that's a given, being a Freshman D in this league. But what the hell is going on with Alt? After paying more attention to him, he looks absolutely brutal! He's regressed severely in my opinion - making stupid decisions with/without the puck, taking stupid penalties, and just general sloppiness. I hope he can turn it around because he's got high-level talent but hasn't shown it this year.

I think both he and Reilly have been suspect so far this year.
I'm in favor of seeing the return of the Alt - Marshall pairing.
