I think we should also mention the coaching staff. After suffering through years where the team was as predictable as sunrise, to the point where I was convinced the playbook consisted of a couple of engraved stone slabs (Thou shalt not pass cross ice in your own zone; Thou shalt not carry the puck in front of your own goal; Thou shalt not leave your assigned spot on the ice), it has been a real pleasure to watch this team consider options and adjust to what the opponent is doing.

Here's another link -- game notes for this weekend's series against Minnesota State.
Dating back to last season, the Gophers are on a 20-game winning streak, which is one away from tying an NCAA record (Harvard, 21 wins, Jan. 4-March 15, 2008). A sweep of Minnesota State would give the Gophers the longest winning streak in NCAA women’s hockey history.

While that is true, I'd say it was true through the first dozen games as well. Being the reigning champ tends to attract attention.

Can't argue with you there, ARM. But I would think that the longer the win streak continues, the more each opponent will relish being the one to end it.

Minnesota State is a feisty team with speed and effort. What they don't have is a lot of offense. The Gophers survived a sloppy first period and then MSU made them work hard for their goals. In that sense it was probably the most competitive game we've played all season.

At the same time, it could have been a much wider margin. Butters made some very nice saves, particularly when Minnesota was shorthanded. The Gophers also hit five pipes, several of which beat Butters cleanly and could easily have gone in.

If one of Coach Lucia's prize frosh missed a home game the details would be all over the evening sportscasts and morning newspapers.

Definitely one of the more obvious differences between the men and women. I suspect one factor is also the discrepancy in interest from the media.
