Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I hope you guys are right. I remain worried.
Maybe it's all relative, because I remember the 2001-02 season when they only had 11 forwards, including two walk-ons that rarely played and were gone the following season, and five D. That was still enough to get them them two banners.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

We'll get some answers regarding the depth question this weekend. Davis and Terry are off camping with the Canadians. Kessel is still on the mend but will play, although not her usual minutes. So that means for this weekend, the available forwards, by class, figure to be:

Kortum, Frischmann, Downey, Kessel, Brausen, Bona, Lorrence, Burns, Brandt, Menefee, and Garzone.

Very much looking forward to a first look at Menefee and Garzone.

Presumably both Frischmann and Downey will have to assume roles more prominent than what was expected of them in the past.

Downey was actually on the third line for much of her first season until the decision was made to go with the more experienced Horton over a freshman. She spent most of her sophomore season at D and last year she wasn't with the team for much of the year. So I think she still has the potential to contribute, if she isn't too rusty when she gets her chances. I expect that outside of this weekend and any other time when we are very short of bodies up front that Frischmann is more likely to figure in the blue line picture. She did fine as a fill in when people like Seeler, Jalosuo, and Bozek were hurt last season.

On the roster both Frischmann and Burns are listed as F/D's. So with forwards Davis and Terry both out of the lineup this weekend, and with three sets of true D's, I would imagine that Frischmann and Burns will be seeing all their icetime at forward(?). I guess we'll see in a few short days.

P.S. Why does Canada have to schedule their camp on what everyone knew would be opening weekend for D1 hockey in the U.S.?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I also think that the biggest improvements over last year's performance are most likely to come from this year's juniors. It may be hard for Kessel to improve on what she has already done, a repeat of All-America would be just fine, thank you. The others all seem poised for a big step forward. We won't see Davis and Terry this weekend making the early evaluation of this year's team more difficult but Gillanders improved very noticeably last year and should again, I am looking for stellar performances by all three Canadians. Brausen could be considered a sort of unofficial Canadian as her home is Little Canada, she dons the C, we should be expecting that she will live up to the challenge.

Excitement builds.

Davis took a big leap in performance over the second half, and I'd take six months at that level in a heartbeat. I think that there are a number of places where the potential exceeds the production from last season. For example, Kortum, Downey and Lorence combined for 8 goals and 17 points. My prediction is that those totals are eclipsed -- maybe by one or more of the three, and certainly by their cumulative numbers.

I apologize in advance for feeling the need to do this... :o

IT'S GAME DAY!!!!

:D

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

So how many players, if any, have scored a hat trick in their first NCAA game?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I dunno, kind of hard to tell too much except for the quite obvious fact that Brandt is apparently pretty good. The Gophers dressed only 11 forwards and Frost rolled out the three lines as listed on collegehockeystats for the first couple of times through. After Kessel and Frischmann made appearances (I thought Kessel first appeared for the power play 7:52 in, Frischmann quite a bit before that) and with Kessel apparently able to stand up to the game's contact and with Frischmann certainly looking as good as several of the forwards who were listed on the first three lines it seemed like it was next three, next three, next three with all eleven jumbled in about as many different line combinations as that would produce with the only caveat being that the four who played center continued to play center. Kortum looked very good, I thought, and it seemed to me that as the game went along Frischmann started to see a bit more time than Downey. Bona hit a couple of posts, maybe three, I couldn't really tell on the last one if it was off her stick or a deflection. Brausen seems to be gradually getting it. The freshmen forwards other than Brandt looked at least up to the pace. The thing is there will be lots and lots of differences to that line up when Davis and Terry return.

The defense lived up to its billing, it is going to be solid. Both of the freshman McMillen and Stecklein skated well, seemed to play with poise and avoided any glaring ooops, that one is a freshman moment. Gillanders is maturing quite nicely and Megan Bozek was only the best player on the ice for nearly every shift she took. Was there someone here a couple of days ago who doubted Ramsey? Those doubts should be eased significantly.

The Finnish kid in goal looked yet again as if none shall pass.

A great start.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

To be honest I was a little disappointed in the Gophers' play for a good portion of the 1st period. The passing wasn't sharp, and Colgate was doing a good job limiting our opportunities. But as the 1st period wore on and continuing into the second, the Gophers' seriously elevated their play. Colgate's goalie did her very best to keep the score reasonably close until the floodgates opened in the 3rd period, when the Gophers began to come at her in waves. As a fan it was fun to see.

Hopefully when the puck drops tomorrow the Gophs can continue right where they left off and keep the pressure on the entire 60 minutes. All of the first year players should have learned from their first D1 game experience and will skate and handle the puck with even more confidence.
