Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

What?

Women's hockey OVERPRICED?

Surely you jest. Even at Ridder surely you jest.

...

Sorry Dave, I cannot agree with you on this one.
I have to save up for a Thanksgiving weekend trip to New England. :D

EDIT: Two additional thoughts...

(1) I didn't say the game was overpriced, just the parking.

(2) As for the game tickets, I want to reference a comment Gopher football coach Jerry Kill made the other day. When asked why all four Gopher punters wear jersey number 38, he said that he didn't like the rule that multiple players could wear the same number, but until they change it he was going to utilize it. I don't think it's smart that GWH single-game at-the-door bench seat tickets are cheaper than season tickets, but until they change it, I'm going to utilize it.

Tickets came UPS this year.

Looking forward to seeing what they have.

Obviously great goaltending, an All-America back on defense with other solid players back as well, two of the top three centers return and several other forwards who played significant minutes last season.

How soon and how well the frosh fit in will tell a huge tale about which expectations are reasonable and which are only wishful thinking.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I think tha the gophers biggest challenge will be BC this year. Minesota lost alot of key players due to graduation like the lost sarah erickson, emily west, jen schoullis, and kelley seeler. they got some youth to replace some of these gaps they lost.
BC only lost mary restuccia and danielle welch but the got skarupa and some major aditions on defense. i would like to see these two teams play each other in the frozen four.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I'd take that right now! But it won't be easy for either team to get there...

why would you take that right now is it because BC killed the gophers in the Ncaa quater finals two years ago

What I meant was that right now I would take just getting to the Frozen Four, no matter who we played. This is especially true this year because it would be on home ice!

Looking forward to seeing some of my GWH fan friends in a few days. Feels like summer's over outside...must be that time. ;)

Ah yes, a little frost on the pumpkin last night, and snow in Duluth and points north...must be that time. ;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

People point to the players this team lost but in addition to a great freshman class, they have something very important for replacing those that graduated: a number of players who can reasonably be expected to be better this year than last.

Kelly Terry: I thought she played very well in the second half, but her shooting touch vanished all season long. If she combines the maturity she developed last year with the scoring ability she showed as a freshman, she could be dominant.

Becky Kortum: Suffered from injury and illness most of the season and, like Terry, didn't have the same shot she did in 2010-11 when she was in the lineup.

Rachel Ramsey: I commented last year that she was a player who should legitimately terrify both goalies. If she can improve her offense at the margins while tightening up her defensive game she could be a very nice bookend with Bozek.

Meghan Lorence: I thought she was underused last year (as was Stephanie Anderson, but that's water under the bridge now). Even without massive improvement I think she can have a better year just by having a bigger role.

Baylee Gillanders: I think she has some offensive potential she could tap with more confidence, but even without it I think she's like Lorence and just needs a bigger role. If Ramsey can legitimately be seen as stepping up to fill Anne Schleper's role, I think Gillanders can replace Kelly Seeler.

Really, I don't think the biggest worry about this team is replacing the quality of players that were lost, as good as they were. I think the players are on the roster who can do that and the freshman will be perfectly capable of filling in the holes those players vacate. My worry is that I find this team's lack of depth to be scary. One or two key injuries is going to leave them really shorthanded.

I don't share your concerns regarding Ramsey's D.

It's deeper than you think. Not as deep as last year's squad, where other than in net, it was easily one of the three deepest in program history. But the lack of depth in net last year was a bullet that the team dodged successfully. They figure to be in better shape in goal this time, and the blue line has plenty of options. If there is a concern it is up front. I know little about Garzone and Menefee at this point, but between them, Brandt and Byrns, I don't think the cupboard is suddenly bare.

Early on, we'll miss the experience, because five of the departed seniors skated a lot of shifts. However, I think that there is plenty of talent.

I wasn't alone in my thoughts. She made a lot of bad plays in her own end, including a couple that had Noora looking like a shortstop going into the hole to make a save. She got better at the end of the year, but I couldn't tell how much of this was her elevating individual play and how much was the fact that the *entire* team played ridiculously well in their own end for the last five weeks of the season. Then again, I think she can be a lot better and it's certainly possible that my concerns are completely misplaced for *this* year. That's my hope.

It's deeper than you think.

No, it's not. The roster has 11 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 listed as D/F. 19 skaters total. Two injuries or losses to a national team and they can't dress a full bench. That's thin. Of those 19, one of the forwards and one of the swing players have a long history of being relegated to door opening (except, oddly enough, an entire season of the forward playing defense). To even be a three line team, you're basically asking all of the freshmen and Jordyn Burns to be contributors right away, unless you think they're going to be completely healthy all year.

Different definition of "depth". What ARM is talking about is depth of talent -- can we/will we get scoring out of more than just the top two lines? Last year the answer was a pretty emphatic "yes". Are we comfortable rolling 4 lines if everyone's healthy? Again, last year it was "yes". Plus having Bozek adding 41 points from the blue line didn't hurt. Whether we're that deep again this year remains to be seen, but I agree with ARM's analysis.

As for bodies, we only had 20 available at the best of times last year. Is not having that 20th player going to kill us this year? Doubtful.

Gophs will be fine...Brandt will flirt with 40. Terry, Davis, Brausen and Lorence will add another 20-40 combined points over last year. The D will be fine. All 5'8" or bigger. Garzone and Menefee will be solid. Burns will be the floater but don't see her playing a large role.

Ramsey was a Freshy who played a ton of minutes. I thought she was excellent and will only get better. All D in the WCHA will have issues at times.

Injuries will be the only question. Heard top 3 forwards have issues? If/When will they be read??

I thought she was a freshman and played like one. She got better as the year went along. That seems to me to be an expected path for a freshman.

I certainly understand your reasoning but I going with CD on this one.

For most of the games during Coach Frost's tenure the team has skated three lines.

So 11 forwards is 2 more than are likely to see lots of ice time against Wisconsin, UND and UMD. A couple of injuries probably really only means that there won't be a full fourth line dressed. Who probably were only going to see a couple of shifts anyway.
