Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

I have a quick question I plan on attending a good number of Womens games this year. Do they by chance simulcast mens games when they are playing at the same time? For that matter now that I think of it, are there even televisions in Ridder?
Thanks

Go Gophers!

No simulcasts or televisions at Ridder. :( When there's a conflict and you want to see both, your best bet might be to DVR the mens game and watch it when you get home.

You won't be able to watch the games, but will get the occasional scoring updates.

Ah, just grab a broom or something and run back and forth in the tunnel. ;)

For the number of student workers they have, it just may work. Hopefully the arena manager isn't on here.

Look out for a 'ManInTheTunnel'! ;)

5-0 after two. Goals by Kessel (2), West, Schoullis, and Lorence. Shots are 39-9.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey: 2011-2012 Season Thread

Final 6-0.

Attendance posted as 457, embarrassing. About half of that number was the band (OK, slight exaggeration but it WAS the largest band ever, a full section).

Kortum and Anderson not dressed tonight, Frischmann and Ludwigson instead. I heard someone say something about illness. Maybe the Division I women's columnist knows. The change in roster resolved itself into only three lines seeing regular shifts. The 3rd was Bona centering Lorence on the left and Brausen on the right, they were rewarded for consistently solid play with Lorence's first collegiate goal. The fourth line saw Downey getting spot duty and then the full line was out for one shift in the 2nd and several shifts in the 3rd.

It was a dominating performance by the Gophers. Kessel scored two, one a wonderful top shelf far corner laser shot from the top of the left circle. Schoullis got her 100th point as a Gopher. There were lots and lots of pretty plays but not all pretty plays end in goals. However, both of the West goals on feeds from Terry (one short handed, one on the power play) were pretty, pretty plays.

Geez, 457 really sucks.

Don't know about Anderson, but I was told that Kortum has mono. :(

Two wonderful snipes from Kelly Terry, first picking the top glove side corner at 10 seconds of the second period and then finding the roof again from what appeared to be virtually on the goal line extended, both great goals.

Also a really, really nice goal from Meghan Lorence coming down the slot. And Bethany Brausen with her best goal yet of her Gopher career, a legitimate nice move when she was in alone.

The clear number one star of the game though, was Amanda Kessel with the pure hat trick (plus an earlier one off the post), three goals in a row in eight minutes in the second period. We are not worthy.

The final was 8-0, shots 50-11, Shyler Sletta played the third period in goal for the Gophers.

I didn't see it happen, whatever it was, there towards the end of the second period, but I saw her afterwards on the bench standing a little awkwardly at the entrance to the tunnel, and then she didn't come out for the third.

Very, very troubling.

Does anyone know what happened?

Frost in interview says "upper body injury", "status uncertain".

Kessel in her interview did not sound even vaguely optimistic.

Very, very troubling.

It would be nice to go through a season healthy, but after never really being so last year, this one isn't off to a good start. Four players down after two weeks, and the Schoullis injury likely will impact multiple lines. Oh well, opportunity for somebody else to step up and PP time for someone who wouldn't have had it otherwise. Likely candidates are Jalosuo, Bona, or Lorence. Also a little short on PK forwards with both Schou and Kortum out.

Former Gophers in attendance (that I noticed): Souba and Chelsey Brodt on Friday.

Souba, Horton, Rasmussen and Francis tonight.

I saw the end of the play, but not what led up to it. She was able to skate off the ice, but was obviously in pain. The person next to me remarked what a "tough kid" she is, but this was a very hard collision.

If she's out of the lineup for an extended period, it's very troubling indeed, because her line has had such tremendous chemistry in every game this season and you hate to see it broken up. But as ARM said, it presents an opportunity for someone else to step up, something we'll really need to keep the momentum going and come away with some points next weekend against the mighty Badgers.

On a brighter note, Minnesota Gopher hockey had a weekend to remember. Total score for the women and men combined was 29-0, which has to be some kind of a record. :)

And, to top it off, both teams now go on the road to play their respective defending NCAA champs.
