Minnesota at Penn St. - Feb. 17-18, Let's get ready to Rummmble!

Penn St. snapped a four game losing streak with some convincing Ws on the road against the BADgers. The Gophers managed to eek out a split on the road with OSU with a record PP performance last Saturday.

Penn St. currently #6 in the PWR and Gophers at #4 means huge PWR implications for both teams in this series. With the Gophers sweeping Penn St. at Mariucci a couple weeks ago, the Nittany Lions will be looking for some payback on home ice. This could turn out to be a very physical series with a lot of SOG by both teams.

Like to see the Gophers win Friday this time to have a shot at the sweep.

Looking back at our last series - just two weeks ago - the difference in the two teams' goaltending was huge. Funkey and Jones were a combined 48/58 for a SV% of .828 while Eric Schierhorn had two outstanding games, making 66 saves on 69 shots (.957). A big question is whether each teams' goaltending reverts closer to their season-long averages, where Penn State (mostly Jones) actually holds a slight advantage at .905 vs. Schierhorn's .897 (although he's mostly played better than that stat would indicate since the break, after an inconsistent 1st half). Be that as it may, Schierhorn will have to be sharp in front of a hostile Penn State crowd if the Gophers hope to keep their strong positive momentum going.

The other big question is how healthy are the Gophers' skaters after an absolutely bruising series last weekend? Hopefully everyone is healed and ready to go. Penn State has to be feeling pretty good about themselves too after sweeping Bucky in Madison last weekend. Should be a great series. I would say a split is the most likely outcome.

Gophers Row the Boat to a season sweep of Penn State.

It was very difficult to root for PSU last week, but I guess that was the one situation it was okay. Still, don't feel right about it and it may take a sweep to wash away the uneasy feelings.

Note to OSU fans, you won't find a single gopher fan on here* trying to defend that hit. It was dirty and Gates should hit the showers early** for it.

*-if there are, I'm confident they will be called out by Minnesota fans.
**-Easy Sandusky, these kids can actually defend themselves.

Yeah, no question Gates deserved the major. Gophers were fortunate to escape with only the one goal against.

Re: Minnesota at Penn St. - Feb. 17-18, Let's get ready to Rummmble!

Yup. Not dirty but clearly stupid and deserved the call.

Re: Minnesota at Penn St. - Feb. 17-18, Let's get ready to Rummmble!

Dirty may have been the wrong word. But it was 100% deserved (the major)

This is a massive win for the team. Win one more and we have a downhill path to a #1 seed.

I thought the Gophers came out with strong energy straight out of the gate and showed some mental toughness tonight to overcome penalty issues. I really liked the way the D protected the net, blocked a ton of shots and their breakouts looked very clean.

Rem Pitlick's got some serious wheels and looks like a future Gopher star. Congrats to Justin Kloos with a big goal to pull away from Penn St. in the 3rd and ties Neal Broten for total points putting him in rare air with an elite class of Gopher players. Schierhorn's save in the waning minutes was huge to seal the W. Nice win!:)

Although I never lost confidence because of the way we were playing I was agonizing a little after a defensive breakdown led to the Penn State goal that tied it 3-3. At that point I was thinking that all of the near-misses - great chances that we didn't convert - would come back to haunt us. No worries, we made a couple of great plays to pull away, a great start to the weekend. Hoping for a repeat performance tomorrow night.

I don't think that 3rd goal by PSU was due to a D breakdown. It was a 3 hole shot from the point from Kris Myllari through three Gopher bodies trying to block it.

Re: Minnesota at Penn St. - Feb. 17-18, Let's get ready to Rummmble!

The point man was given too big of a gap to collect and shoot the puck. 2 Gophers moved to block it way too early, way too far from the shooter. The third ran into them and went down flailing.
Looking back at it, it was pretty comical. At the time it was agonizing.

But good result tonight. I was going to be at least somewhat contented with a tie given the early 5-min major and having to shuffle the forwards pretty much all game long. But once again the PP comes through with a big goal. Great to see.

The 2 things that can win 1-and-done tournaments for any team is a hot PP and a hot netminder. The PP is definitely there, hopefully it stays on track for the rest of the season. Netminding has been moving in the right direction.
