Minnesota @ Alaska Anchorage: 11/9-11/10

Re: Minnesota @ Alaska Anchorage: 11/9-11/10

Yeah, our flight lands at 6:30, and we're going straight to the game, we might miss the first few minutes, but what can ya do? I'm going to wear my black Tech jersey and my girlfriend will have her Gopher jersey.

Okay! I think we're going to be there on Friday, I'll look for you two.

To those who are familiar with hockey a "possession game" is when you chip the puck in deep ... win the puck and then work it deep and along the boards in an attempt to get it out front for a scoring chance. It is not as you seem to assume a soccer game where you ensure accurate passes to open players in order to control the ball and the flow of the game. Attempting (as I said ... ) "...to take advantage of size and strength and try at least to make a possession game work; that didn't work so much..." means exactly that. Size and strength are the attributes that suit such a style best; so yeah junior ... the "skating ability" in your context doesn't come into it much. Watch hockey for 40 years and listen to the coaches and analysts that have played the game and you'll learn something about the game that passively "cheering for the gophers" won't provide. Don't be a Brent. Nobody really wants to see that. Learn the game.

Also, your earlier apology is accepted.

Um, AHEM. I actually agree with you on the size/speed thing. So f* you very much. :p

Skating ability is fundamental to a possession game...ask tDon. So does this mean I still get my Christmas card?:)

By the way, Brent knows more about college hockey than most people.

Possession means simple passing and strength to fend off defenders. Skating isn't as important as in a transition/run'n'gun offense. Basically, a possession game is like an offensive trap game. Slow and steady, etc.

Hey I just defended you...don't blow it ok? Watch the cycle.

Re: Minnesota @ Alaska Anchorage: 11/9-11/10

Roman is predicting the Gophers sweep. Should I be concerned?

Re: Minnesota @ Alaska Anchorage: 11/9-11/10

I'm just disagreeing that you need to be a pure skater to run a possession game, that's all. We good. :)

Remember a possession game involves both zones. The Gophers possession game is one of the hallmarks of Gopher style hockey, and it has NEVER been about strength and size, but cycling fundamentals of skating, positioning, precision passing and shooting. That's why Shyiak's brainchild didn't work.

So now he's recruiting skaters??:D It still won't work. Why? Because Shyiak is a *** horrible coach and should have been shown the door years ago. The Gophers had three years of slightly above .500 hockey and everyone was calling for Lucia's head. Shyiak has NEVER had a .500 season in his 7 year coaching career at UAA. IIRC, UAA is currently tied for the most consecutive losing seasons in D1 NCAA college hockey with American International (18 seasons). That's pathetic for a WCHA team and UAA needs do to some serious housecleaning up there if they're serious about being competitive...period.

One question: would YOU want to attend school in AK, and live there? It's like MTU, only colder and more remote. Just sayin'. ;)

As long as they do the sharing of wives hospitality bit, I'm ok with it.;)

Plus Anchorage is a MUCH larger city than Houghton. Probably doesn't feel nearly as remote.

RE: Possession Brand Hockey

First, I'd just point out there's more than one way to skin a cat.
But I also think you have to consider the size of the ice sheet. MN plays well over half their games on Olympic sized ice. UAA plays well over half on an NHL sized sheet. That makes a difference.

When UAA has come to Mariucci, they do usually try to slow the game down and stack the blue line a bit, waiting for transition opportunities. But up in Anchorage, most the games I've seen them play (and I've seen quite a few thanks to their fantastic internet presence) involve a lot of board and corner play. I'm not sure they've been successful enough in their intent to really say they are a possession team, but I can certainly see how some would say that is the intent.

For what it's worth, I think Shyiak is a pretty good coach. I've stated before that I'm pretty curious about what he could do with a team that was able to recruit a bit more top-end talent. The trouble I see for him (from a few thousand miles away) is that it's hard to keep kids "buying in" when winning seasons are hard to come by.

You could have a city in the center of the Sahara that is bigger than most cites, and it would still be remote. Just sayin'. ;)
