Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

4 teams are vying for the 3 home ice slots
Minnesota is in 2nd with 36 points
We are 3rd with 34
ND is 4th with 34, I am assuming we have the tiebreaker since that is the way they are listed
PSU is 5th with 32

Minnesota has finished their conference schedule so they will end with 36 points
ND and PSU are playing a pair in South Bend so one of them will go down or, worst case for us, a split
We will be in Madison for a pair.
I think our chances are pretty good to be playing in Yost 2 weeks from now.

After watching how we finished the game, forgive me for not being excited. Our "best" players were nowhere as the game came to a finish. There was no one line that I thought we would score. Not one.

Where was our so hailed Quinn Hughes? Too many times, instead of leading a fast break out against a team not prepared, he circled back, and waited, and waited, and waited- long enough to let OSU pressure him, and we totally wasted a winning face off. I'm also wondering what happened to Will Lockwood? He was pretty sloppy with the puck, too. I could have sworn he would easily be going pro at the end of the season from what I had seen not too long ago.

After what happened last year, this is a tough season to watch.

Thankfully, we are seeing some indications of what is to come- Moyle had a great weekend- much of which were serious hustle. If he can build on that, we are in great shape. Even before he scored, I thought Blankenberg looked super confident with the puck- if he puts on a little weight to add to his puck skills, he's going to be an amazing defenseman. And Mann mostly is playing well- I know he wanted that over the shoulder one back.....

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Joe, we missed it. Apparently there was an email about tickets should we have home ice. Mine was in my spam folder and I didn't know until alfa mentioned it to me at the game last night. Deadline was Sunday the 17th. My seat mate also missed the deadline. I'm sure it won't sell out, but I would like my seat if I can have it

Hope you get your seats and wanted to say I'm glad I got to run into you after the game for a quick "Hi". Best of luck in the first round tournament game.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

What a terrible way to lose the extra point. Credit to the other team for playing smart waiting for their guy to come out of the box.

That game was chippy and ugly. Credit to our guys who stopped playing when they saw Nappier on the ice without a helmet. I imagine it's tough to stop when you see a loose puck and the ref hasn't yet blown the whistle.
As alfa mentioned, there are are good takeaways. Moyle had an outstanding weekend. His line was great. I love seeing the hustle from the some of the younger guys like Raabe.
The bright side is we got 4 points against the best team in the conference.

A win this weekend gets us home ice regardless of other games (3 points puts us ahead of Minnesota and out of range of State and Wisconsin).

Hope you get your seats and wanted to say I'm glad I got to run into you after the game for a quick "Hi". Best of luck in the first round tournament game.

Thanks. It was nice to see you. I hope you enjoyed your time at Yost. Sorry I didn't chat for long, there was a lot going on that night, including seeing a friend that just moved back to MI that I hadn't seen in a couple years.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

So I just called the ticket office- and got our seats for the round one game.

One *might* have not gotten an email if you included the playoffs in your season ticket. I had no idea that was an option- as I would have done that...

But you can get your seats for the first round.

Thanks for the heads up about this. I called yesterday afternoon and had no trouble reserving tickets/getting my seats. Now the team just needs to win so we can all watch more hockey at Yost.

A win this weekend gets us home ice regardless of other games (3 points puts us ahead of Minnesota and out of range of State and Wisconsin).

The "Worst case" scenario would be PSU sweeping ND in South Bend and Wisconsin sweeping us on their sheet.
That would put PSU 2nd with 38 points, Minnesota 36 points both at home then a 3 way tie at 34 points between us, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
I have no idea how the tiebreakers would shake out.

Well...this got me curious.

From the B1G website:
When two or more teams are tied, ties shall be broken according to the following procedure.

a) Seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the greater number of Big Ten regular-season wins;

b) If not determined by (a), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the team with the best regular-season winning percentage against the other tied team(s);

c) If not determined by (a) or (b), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the team with the fewest number of Big Ten regular season losses;

d) If not determined by (a) or (b) or (c), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by comparison of the winning percentages of the tied team(s) against the remaining highest ranked Big Ten teams in conference games, successively, until the determination is accomplished or all Big Ten regular-season contests have been considered;

e) If not determined by (a) or (b) or (c) or (d), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by comparison of total goals for and against each team in contests between (among) tied team(s) in conference games. For sake of clarity, a team's goals-against shall be subtracted from its goals-for, in order to compare;

f) If not determined by (a) or (b) or (c) or (d) or (e), seeding amongst tied teams shall be determined by the flip of a coin.

In the case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria will be used in order until a team, or teams, is separated from the pack. At that point, the process will begin anew to break the "new" tie. In other words, when a four-way tie becomes a three-way tie, the three-way tie is treated as a "new" tie and the process begins with the first tie-breaking criterion.

So, in your scenario, with 3 teams tied at 34 points, Michigan ends the season with 9 conference wins, Notre Dame with 10, Wisconsin with 9.
Notre Dame gets 4th place.

Having tied Wisconsin earlier this season (2OT W and shootout loss), a sweep of us this weekend gives them the head to head and 5th place.
Michigan finishes 6th.

There is a worse case- a PSU win and a tie of any type with us getting swept puts PSU ahead of us, and breaks the current tie with ND.

If we lose a game in the 3-3 OT or lose the shoot out, and also lose- so one point for us, a PSU win, with a ND 3-3 or SO win would put us in a tie with PSU, or flip that OT/SO win and we are in a tie with ND.

If we win a 3-3 or SO, so 2 points, and I think we get home ice- as that would require PSU to sweep to pass us, which would mean we pass ND. (not sure how the MN tie would run out)

One win, and we are in, regardless- passes MN in points and we are done.

It's interesting to see that we can be as high as 2nd, or as low as a tie for 5th at this point (6th in seeding).

(I think I did that right)

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Ok here's the breakdown as best I can calculate
We get 3 points we host next weekend.
We get 1 or 2 points, the lowest we finish is 5 ('sconnie has to sweep to catch us).
1 point has us host if Penn State gets 2 or fewer points vs. ND OR if Penn State sweeps and the domers get 0 points
2 points has us host unless Penn State gets 4 points and Notre Dame gets 2..any other split would have us in front of one of them ..the tiebreaker at 36 points would have PSU, ND and UMn all with more conference wins and finishing ahead of us).

If we get swept...we're on the road for the playoffs (OSU & MN stay ahead of us, Notre Dame and Wisconsin would have tie breaker over us)

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Not a good start to the weekend. That OT was brutal- get a PP and see Wisconsin get all of the actual shots on goal for those 2 min. And then at the very end of that, a clear slot shot is passed up, which lead to the winning goal.

The math hasn't changed, other than 2 or 3 points has us hosting next week, as the scenario of that not working can't happen. One pt is still a risk, and a loss gets us a ticket refund for sure.

Yeah, one point for us coupled with 3 for PSU puts us in a tie for the #4/#5 seed slots and the difference between next week at home or away. I don't care to try and figure out the tiebreaker should that happen. My 68 year old brain isn't up to that. I think I'll have another adult beverage instead.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Without a BIG improvement in team defense tonight we can all start making travel plans for next weekend. The constant giveaways have to stop. Team has shown the ability to win this game. But will they do it? Go Blue!!

That, by a big margin, is what has frustrated me for over a decade- they have clearly shown the team can play with anyone. Sadly, that means both good and bad.

I wish I could be more positive, and we've mentioned our frustrations at games, but this is a tough season.

For us, part of it is our fault- as our travel this season has force us to miss a whole lot of games. And we've not really done a great job to connect with any of the players on this team, too. We need to talk this summer.... :)

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Get a gift, and just give it away... wow. That was terrible.

We get out ticket money back, I guess.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

One of the most disappointing series in recent memory. Two wins against a lesser team and we finish in 2nd with home ice the first 2 rounds. Instead we just gave away 2 games to finish in 6th. Sloppy play by the team and terrible goalie play both nights. What a disappointing season.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

Got my playoff refund. I'm still disappointed at last weekend's results. I had gotten used to us not earning a sweep, but being swept? ugh.

Time for what is likely our last weekend of the season. Will we at least force a game 3?

I normally love watching the speed and skill of a Michigan vs. Minnesota game. This weekend I'm a bit meh on it. I still love Michigan hockey, it's just been a disappointing season.

I'm trying to convince husband to go with me to Bowling Green to watch Tech play instead.

Re: Michigan wolverines 2018-19

I was still entertained by the up and down skill game of a typical Michigan- Minnesota game- that's pretty fun.

But this one was an oddball- Minnesota only took advantage of that once, and use never. And the odd part about our team- if we had one or two shooters, we would have been able to put that game away in the 2nd pretty easily. But since we don't- we got more luck than skill goals.

And interesting development tonight- Hughes got hurt late, but should play tonight. And just a quick peek on the MN thread- they somehow think he's going to play in New York later in the week, as that's where the Canucks play later in the week. If we lose, good luck, Quinn. Given the +- you gave us this season vs. last year, I can't say that I'll miss you much. Nice kid, for sure- but our team could not make up for him turning the puck over at bad times.
