Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Ugg! That was a brutal game to be at. First, the BC crowd was mostly absent. I assume they were on break or close to it. The arena was probably about 50% full. Second, there were a lot of Michigan fans there, albeit in small pockets scattered around the rink.

For the game play, Michigan looked rough in the first period. That being said, they hit the post a couple of times and missed the net a ton. I would say, for the night, they missed the net at least a dozen times. The turning point came in the first period. The teams were playing four on four. The defense pairing was Downing and Serville. Serville pinched in and could not get the puck, giving up a 2 on 1 the other way. BC scores and that was it.

After the first period, Michigan played at the worst even and looked like they were controlling play in the second. When Michigan scored to make it 3-1, it looked like we could have come back. Downing and Martin made some big hits and momentum was on our side. Unfortunately, Downing made a huge hit right in front of the BC bench, which took him out of position and BC scored to make it 4-1. An empty netter later and we have the 5-1 final score.

In this game, the only defenseman I had complete confidence in was Werenski. Downing played well defensively, but could not keep control of the puck. Copp, Compher and Larkin all had good rushes, but we could not get much offense set up in the BC zone. Actually, Selman's line probably looked the best at setting up an offense, they just couldn't bury it.

Overall, a rough weekend for us. Luckily, the seafood and sights around Beantown made it a fun trip.

You just described our defense in a nutshell. Too much individual risk taking (Serville/Dwning- which is partly why he is out of the WJT) and non existent backchecking by the forwards, too interested in pushing the offense. Another season w/o the NCAA's. The GLI may be palatable only because the team will be forced to actually focus on defense with four top guys gone.

Mentioned in the game thread, but early game times for this weekend.

6:35 for Friday and 4:05 for Saturday.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Our offense (and Minnesota's lack of defense) covered up a ton of mistakes this weekend. Minnesota is a highly skilled team, but we have consistently given up 3 or more goals to the better teams we have played this season and didn't match the offense we had this weekend (except at UML) : @Ferris, @MTU, @BU, @ UML, @BC which is why we only won one of those games. Plus, we dropped two home games giving up 3G to PSU and 5 to UNH- which lends to why we are on the outside looking in as far as PWR.

Why bring this up? Because the next eight games are away from Yost. Single game next weekend at OSU. Weekend series in two weeks at Wisconsin. Single game vs MSU in three weeks at JLA (our home game.) Outdoor game vs. MSU in four weeks in Chicago. Rematch weekend in Minneapolis for Valentines. Single game @ OSU (part of a H&H.) It's brutal. I hope that the team can lock down and improve their defensive play and give themselves a chance to win the B1G Ten.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Michigan isn't anything great this year, even though we are in first place in the B1G. However, does anyone else find it extremely entertaining that both Minny and Wisky are in the last two places in the league? I just realized that tonight, and they thought they'd dominate the league...

I find it hilarious.

Of course, we'll have to see how our team does on the road these next couple of months.

800: Just Another Milestone For Red

January 13, 2015

by Steve Kornacki/Special to CHN

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was a Mount Rushmore moment when Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson won his 800th game Saturday, becoming only the fourth to accomplish that total in the college ranks.

Berenson, in his 31st season, got win No. 799 and 800 after the Wolverines' weekend sweep of Big Ten rival Minnesota. He won NCAA championships in 1996 and 1998 amid a national-record streak of 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, reached 11 Frozen Fours and won 11 CCHA titles.

He didn't break .500 until his fourth season. But three years after that, in 1990-91, Berenson began a streak of eight straight 30-win seasons at his alma mater, and his legend grew.

And now, he's joined three long-time adversaries and friends on the 800-win plateau. Current Boston College coach Jerry York, still active and at 975 victories, tops the list. Former Michigan State and Bowling Green coach Ron Mason is next at 924 wins, followed by recently-retired Boston University icon Jack Parker at 897.

What does No. 800 mean to Berenson?

"It means I've been around a long time," Berenson, 75, said with a chuckle. "When I came here, I didn't know how long I would be here. I really cared about Michigan. And as I grew into the job, I cared about the players. I wanted to give back, and I wanted other players to have the same experience I had — which I considered more than just a four-year thing. It became a lifetime relationship with the program and the university and the alumni. So, here I am all of these years later.

"The good thing is we've had some good teams and good seasons. And it was my intent from the start to help Michigan become a hockey dynasty. Now that's easier said than done, and we're still working on it."

He's coached two Hobey Baker Award winners — Brendan Morrison in 1997 and Kevin Porter in 2008 — and continues attracting top talent such as Detroit Red Wings first-rounder Dylan Larkin. But the Wolverines are 12-7 (4-1 Big Ten) this season with a very young team.

"The wins are going to take care of themselves," Berenson said. "I can tell you the losses are a lot tougher than the wins are enjoyable. So, to me, it was about not losing. The losses — and you can ask any coach — I can't believe I survived that many losses."

He's lost 391 times with 84 ties.

And it's hard for Berenson to recall his greatest triumphs in the 1996 and 1998 championship seasons without remembering the loss in the 1997 semifinal game to Parker and Boston University.

"They were huge," Berenson said of beating Colorado College, 3-2, at Cincinnati in '96 and Boston College, 3-2 in overtime, in '98 in Boston. "And there were years when we should've won. And our best team was the '97 team that never won. The ones that you let slip away, too, that you should've, could've won. Like I've said before, the best team doesn't always win."

But the year after failing to win with the '97 team, Berenson beat all-time wins leader York in the most thrilling, high-stakes game he ever coached.

"That was at the FleetCenter," said Berenson. "It was in overtime, and both teams are hitting crossbars. And they had the better team. But we had (goalie Marty) Turco, and we had 10 freshmen. We'd just graduated Brendan Morrison. So, we had no chance against this team. But we had our goalie and Billy Muckalt and Matt Herr — and they just took over the team. They were seniors, and they were terrific."

Those three seniors and the two freshmen who scored all the goals in the championship game — Mark Kosick, with a pair, and Josh Langfeld — were among 12 players on that squad to play in the NHL.

Chris Fox set up Langfeld from behind the net, and Langfeld circled in front of goalie Scott Clemmensen to beat him on the short side of the net through an opening just wide enough for a puck. And 17:51 into the overtime, the Wolverines had won it all for an NCAA-record ninth time.

Muckalt made his way to Berenson on the bench and placed a hug on his coach that said it all. It was a can't-let-go embrace of jubilation and gratitude. And after the biggest of his nearly 800 wins, it was a scene that said the most about what Gordon "Red" Berenson accomplishes from behind the bench.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Big game tonight (in my opinion). Hopefully the team can double their away game wins tonight at tOSU. It's nice to see Michigan leading the conference standings but with little success on the road and having played no away conference games, it's meaningless. Tonight will be a good test.

Part of me is excited to see Michigan ahead in the conference standings, and the other part of me remembers it's only 5 games in, our defense is inconsistent and we've got twice as many away games left as home games.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Yea, the road struggles are concerning. However, I recall a few years ago when players would say that they liked playing on the road because it founded an "us against them" mentality. What happened to that? Even though the road record is abysmal it isn't that bad. Michigan has played some pretty good teams on the road. Of course winning all of those (or even half) games would be ideal it will hopefully put a fire in the team to know that just putting on the uniform doesn't equal a win. Plus, always remember that games at neutral locations are more important (theoretically) and Michigan is 2-0.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Pretty young team. Yalie, son writes for Daily & is Soph in AA. Have seen quite a bit of both teams. Very similar, young and skilled. Get solid goaltending & watch out for this team. Last weekend no fluke. Think you guys will make it to NCAA's & by that time, wouldn't want to play your team.

Our offensive talent is awesome, but the defense and netminding is awful. Not a good mix against good teams that play defense.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Honestly can't recall the last time I saw Michigan have quite the 2-game offensive showing like they have had their last 2 games.

Gotta fix those goals against.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

11 goals against in two games? Holy cow that's bad.

If the sticks get cold, we will have some work to do.

Then again, it kinda looked like they change how they played once up 4-1. Can't do that and get far.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Where's all the bucky talk? I know that they are reeally struggling this year but come on....
