Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

So much for the tape to tape passing. So many of them were a half or full step ahead of the targeted player. And hard to watch the team dump, and not get it. Seems like a few times there was plenty of space to skate the puck in.

Still have issues with shooting the puck- man, there were a bunch of great chances, and the puck didn't even reach the goalie.

Great goal by PDG. Got the goalie to move, and boom.

Missed the second goal.

And a timely sharp shot to end the game by Copp.

I thought PDG should have gotten a star on friday. He was flying every shift, something I can't say for Guptill.

The second goal: Moffatt in the high slot, takes a shot that was going a foot or two wide, hits a d-man's stick, deflects up and off the crossbar, down to the skate of Copley and trickles in. Pure luck, but at least he is shooting it.

I also think that the Copp goal was tipped off of the d-man's stick, seem to handcuff Copley.

I agree with you on Phil, night-and-day difference between tonight's game and vs. BU where he stunk up the place.

The second goal went cleanly in off of Sweeney's (#17 MTU) skate. I am not 100% sure, it could have been minorly tipped like you said, but Copp's shot looked pretty clean to me. Yes I was forced the sit in the North end-zone tonight with all of the boisterous Tech fans. They were pretty cool actually, although the one behind me had really bad breath.

But that was perhaps the worst effort by Michigan all year (granted I haven't seen every game). In the end it doesn't matter because they won. Doubt that they would against better competition if they continue to play like that though. I didn't see the jump, the crisp passes, or the confidence that Michigan typically displays. I'm going to attribute it to an off-night...

Alfa and I sit in 24 & 26, so we have a pretty good view. It was definitely tipped... I could hear it. Copley was already down, but he seemed handcuffed and had that 'what happened' look at his d-man.

Not the best game- totally outplayed in the 2nd and second part of the 3rd, but I guess after such high level games against HEA, can't expect them to be up like that every game. Give Tech credit too, the gameplan was brilliant, non stop three man pressure on the puck deep- especially after Lohan went down (btw- it doesn't sound good) and in the neutral zone, Tech took away the boards. It looked like last year, unfortunately, bottled up in our end. If MTU had more offensive talent, they would have won. Reminded me of what Notre Dame did to us, too.

Petan, Heinonen, D. Johnstone, Pietila, Vallis, Kero, Hanna, and Leibinger are the offensively skilled players. Walker Hyland is struggling a bit.
Did you not notice the moves and attempts Heinonen created in the third all by himself.

I would love to say I heard it, but I heard more about Porsches from Copps grandfather and the guy sitting behind them. He TOTALLY missed the winning goal by his grandson.

It was great to see PDG really flying around last night- he had more than just the one opportunity to score. And it was cool to see so many of the forwards streaking in to try the same move that he scored on. Sadly, resulting in a dumb penalty at one point- gotta MISS the goalie. Kind of the point.

Tech did a great job keeping the passing really off ballance. As my wife mentioned, Mel knew exactly what Red would do. But, by now, so does everyone else, and it still works pretty well.

I noticed the scoreboard. I also noticed the average goals per game stats. I am sure Tech has good talent, but it not manifesting itself in the first 7 games.

Stubborn isn't he? ;)

Oh, and on Kile's penalty.... how far is a goaltender allowed to come out of the crease to impede a forward's attempt at playing the puck? It was borderline at best. He was several strides out of the blue. Crashing the crease is one thing, but being halfway to the corner is another.

No.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

No just a suggestion in reaction to the typical Tech would have won if they had more talent comments from the unknowledgable streaker. Tech was close so Michigan must have had an off night.
I have heard it for years.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Since it clearly will make you feel better, it was clear that michigan had an off night since whoever the other team was clearly sucks.

Agreed on PDG and Guppy. Guptill seems to coast more often than fly.

The second Michigan goal seemed more like Plinko than hockey.

I don't understand why opposing fans haven't figured this out yet. The only team that can beat Michigan is Michigan.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Have to watch the replay here in Minnie, but it sounds like our goal-scoring issues will continue to be a season-long problem.

But the problem keeps cropping up in wins, which is not a problem at all. Quite excited about the start so far. At least there's something sports-related to be excited about tonight.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

We won. And that is the highlight of the game.

Ok, Nagelvoort played darned well, again. And kudos to the announcer with his name. My wife barely caught that, but sure did.

Man, that was not all that entertaining to watch. Neither team did much with the puck, neither team could really get sustained pressure, both teams has bad turnovers in their zone (ours led to their goal). Just an ugly game.

Good thing we have a week off.

This is funny. So, let me lay some "unknowledge" down...

why is Tech's GF average 52nd or so in the country? Where is all the goal scoring talent?
They scored 3 goals this series... 1.5 GPG... lower than the 1.83 GPG they came in with.
How many of those talented players have been drafted? Pietila?
When was the last time this talent laden program make the NCAA tourney? Won a conference? Maybe that is why you have heard it for years.

I think the point is, and it wasn't meant to be a slam until it was made that way... is that Tech works extremely hard, has solid goaltending, but doesn't have any finishers. IF they did, they would have won b/c they probably outplayed Michigan in both games. That was my point. Matter of fact, with the drafted talent Michigan has, they are underperforming in some aspects. The two points are congruent. But take it any way you want. We got the sweep... and see ya at the GLI.
