Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

UMICH- I think you are selling Zach a little short in net. Certainly, the team, the team, the team is making a massive addition to the play. But Nagelvoort is making quite a few goal stealing saves. Last night, the break away was really a good shot- right under he glove arm. And this is after BU scored high, and shot there all night. It was a tough save, and he made it. I still may lean slighly toward Racine, but I have no issues with Nagelvoort in the net- he's big, quick, and anticipates the play really well.

Motte- that kid is going to be either really big, or go pro quickly. He's putting himself in all of the right places to get goals that are almost freebies- and to be able to do that consistently is pretty nice to have on your team.

Compher- big name, everyone knows he's out there, and somehow gets enough space to make some very behind the spotlight plays. He's got an impressive touch on his passes.

I was a little concerned about Guptil's penalty shot, but the way he put that off, the slow improvement in his game is real. He's not 100% where I think he should be, but certainly getting there.

PDG- talk about an enigma. he's like 80% making some incredible moves to get shots. and like 80% of being on the ice. So close but so far.

Defense- well, have not really noticed them, since we are playing so much time in the offensive zone. Which also means that they are getting the puck out of the zone really quickly. So much so that I really don't know who is playing the best of them all. Their puck handling is getting better and better each game- and I do include Claire on that. There is still a little time where the team is a little lost in our zone, but the good thing is that they are keeping the quality shots down during that time.

The best part so far, as a viewing fan- the BU and BC style of play matches well with ours- in a manner that makes is really fun to watch. And seeing the end of the BC-MN game last night- the anticipation to see the gophers is getting higher by the week. I sure hope we get to see all 4 games.

Just imagine if Merrill and Trouba were back on the blue line, too. The good side- experience and size. The bad: Trouba was expected to carry the PP and frequently was out of position. So far I like our "no name" defense, guys that aren't readily going to strike fear into opponents, but have quietly done the job. I thought Bennett deserved his star last night, made some terrific defensive plays and intercepted a few class A opportunities. He also transitioned really well.

Great comments about Zach.. the BU goal was a result of a bad clear and then our guys were tired and got caught standing around. The shot was perfect, high, over the shoulder. Probably one of the few stretches that BU actually threatened. Out of 19 shots, probably 4-5 grade A chances including the breakaway.

Motte has scored in four straight games now and is playing with confidence. I thought Evan Allen had a real good game, too- what a fireplug he is.

Question, does Michigan get to lay claim to The Beanpot now that we have beaten both BC and BU?

Kudos to UML and their fans. Terrific game to watch. Hellebuyck was one save better than Nagelvoort- and being from Commerce, Mi he had extra incentive in front of family.

The difference was the five minute major on PDG. Almost had it killed. I just had the sense that Michigan was worn down by UML's size and speed, always a step late to the puck it seemed. Each team took body punches for 3-4 minute stretches.

I think this team has to stay hungry, so in the long run these types of losses aren't so bad.

I do wish that we can get better play out of PDG-Nieves-Guptill. Two of the three responsible for the penalties that resulted in goals and the other has been invisible for most of the season.

In terms of scoring, will Michigan get 5 goals out of its defense this year? Bennett seems like the only one who can contribute, and this will force forwards to contribute without the likes of Trouba, Merrill, Moffie who have contributed the last few years.

Boo and PDG have only contributed to the offense stat sheet in 2 of the 7 games (including exh) so far, of course one was the RIT game. A lot of misses around the net, will lead to these low scoring games. College hockey lacks finishers.

Michigan could have three scoring lines, getting them to all contribute on the same night is the big question. Can 4th line type players chip in with a goal (Lynch/Kile/Selman/Hyman) on occassion?

Two checking from behind penalties. I have yet to see one of those prevent a goal in a defensive effort without the puck. Disappointing to see that, especially seeing the highlight of PDG's penalty.

Goalie play and goals against have been a surprise, while goal scoring has been challenged with this early Hockey east schedule.

The offense has created enough chances. Like you said, it is the finishing that is the problem. BUT, the opponent's goaltending has had much to do with it, too. Hellebucyk made an unbelievable save on Copp in the 2nd period.... just stretched his toe enough to stop a backhander after a rebound just outside of the crease. That was a sure goal and it was a grade A chance.

I don't mind our defense not contributing to the offense as long as they help keep the puck out of our net. Bennett and DeJong are the only guys that seem to take offensive chances. Clare, Lohan and Serville are stay at home types that lumber. Downing can go both ways, but got caught a couple of times pinching. Chiasson hasn't seen the ice yet, but with good reason- he is high risk/reward. Szuma and Hyman seem to be buried on the depth chart unless someone gets hurt.

We may see a different approach against lesser skilled teams, but for now I don't mind letting the forwards do their jobs.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

My wife was thinking that it would be cool to tell the annoucer to stretch out Nagelvoort's name out (with his permission, of course). It can sound very daunting.

Anyone know how to get in touch with that guy? ;)

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Hey now, there is nothing wrong with stay-at-home, lumbering defensemen. (Speaking as a defensemen who aspires to lumber.)

I concur, but I bet you still skate better than Tim Cook ever did. ;)

Lohan actually jumped up into the play too, saturday. Good thing a forward rotated for him since it took him half a period to skate back from the offensive zone.

Heard that we are getting another Swede next year. Anyone know anything about this? For some odd reason I believe it is known by a majority of us. It sounded familiar when I heard it today....

Is it February yet? They had to do this on purpose. Just make both teams salivate over the matchup for ages...

The only Swede I heard Michigan was recruiting was a goaltending prospect. I am not surprised though, because of the connection with Hagelin and his success at Michigan.

I had heard rumblings about a new Swede on Friday when Hagelin was in the building. At least part of what I heard was false, so I'm not paying attention. Besides, I try not to follow recruiting, that way I won't get upset when they never show on campus and instead play in the OHL.
