Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I take the coach at his word.

Also, it appears most journalists are expecting a st cloud vs UND rematch in the final.

I'm fine with that. When was the last time the NCAA tournament went the way everyone thought it would?

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Interesting article. But I'd say the WCHA met it's goals. Could it be better, maybe but overall it was great and I'm so glad we are not at the Target Center. What a terrible place for hockey. If the NCHC stays there I think the attendance will drop.

To me it's about Minnesota hockey, not about the playoffs themselves, And great words by them about How the WCHA handles it's business. That's good to see. We should be glad we have the admin we have. Light years above the NCHC.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

Im torn on whether this is a good or bad thing for MTU.

Mel is signed through the 20-21 season. he'll get big bonuses if he finishes out that contract. and he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would go back on his word. my hope is that Red retires soon, Michigan gets a coach they are happy with and leave Mel alone.

Interesting article...
Best quote: "The small turnouts over the weekend already have both the NCHC and WCHA looking at combining their tournaments in the future. It's an interesting idea, but again, it brings up the question of why we even made this conference split in the first place..."

The same question has been asked by pretty much every die hard college hockey fan outside the cities of Grand Forks and Denver since day one that the NCHC was announced. Frankly I would rather watch a tourney of Canadian junior teams or the NCAA D-III championships mixed with the WCHA than share a site with the NCHC. All we would ever hear is how the NCHC was kind enough to share their site with the WCHA and "save" our league... They walked away, and they can just keep walking. I'm sure DU and UND will push to host the conference tourney on their campus sites so they can each bank the money every other year. It was never about the fans and what they wanted, why would it be now?

Again, I blame Air Force for this whole conference mess.

I disagree with the writer that the WCHA was or is having attendance problems. We met or exceeded our goal for attendance, so how is that having problems.
Second, he says we are not out of the woods. Well maybe, and maybe not. He has no idea. However, meeting with the NCHC is a good idea and we need, as a league, to explore every way to operate more efficiently we can and if that means doing things with them, fine.

I think it's pretty obvious that if we could have our tournament in Minnesota every year we'd be better off, So what if we share a rink.

The WCHA does a great job running the tournament, and maybe the NCHC wants to capitalize on that part of it. Whatever, if it gives our league more money, and doesn't hurt us,I'm for it. I can't see North Dakota sharing gate receipts with us though.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

I'd say it's pretty much proof that Mel was who was really behind the success at Michigan, not Red, definitely evidenced by Tech's turnaround.
There's no doubt Mel was a big, big part of their long tourney run especially while he was "Associate Head Coach" and presumably controlling a lot of the team's activities. I think he's a brilliant coach of college-age players. "Having said that", I also think Red has legendary skills and his success at MI was in large part the product of synergy with all staff and players he's been involved with over the years. In other words, with less committed players, less competent assistants, less supportive administration, less enthusiastic fan base, Tech would also be watching from home right now. There really is a fine line, which is a positive for struggling teams (and by their standards, MI is struggling) and a negative for very successful teams. It would not be surprising in the least to see MI finish next year ranked 5 and Tech miss the tournament.

Tech 4-2 Friday, Tech 3-1 Saturday.

I thought the Final Five was terrific this year, and I think the attendance exceeded what everyone was expecting. With that said, we had 2 of the top 4 teams in the country, playing just over an hour away from one of those teams' home. We had the wonderfully energized Tech fans, large numbers of whom were willing to make a trip they hadn't been able to make in years. In other words, this may have been pretty much our ceiling for attendance. The only thing that could have boosted it would have been if Bemidji had made it to the X, and even then, only 1 of the 2 Minnesota teams would have advanced to Saturday.

As many people noted, imagine what the crowd would have looked like if BGSU and Ferris had won on Friday. It would have made the Big 10 final look the streets of Calcutta. To hedge against a disaster like that, we may want to get a partner in this thing going forward, and the NCHC is the logical partner.

If Michigan wants Mel and pursues him hard, I can't see him turning them down. Michigan is a top 5 job in college hockey along with BC, BU, Minnesota and North Dakota.

Now, onto more immediate matters at hand. Does Mel match up the Pietila line with the Brodzinski line? Really looking forward to this game.

Me too.

I spent some time with the stats early this morning and the only place I see we have a noticeable advantage is with face-offs. Since we have last change, I'm sure we will do some matching, but I don't think they are as deep a team as Tech is and I wonder if they might be trying to match up to us. I also note that St Cloud's 3ed period stats are noticeably lower than the stats from the other two periods and the second is generally their best period.

St Cloud has a real good power play and an average pk. Kossila is a good player and they are getting him back along with one of their better defensemen. Brodzinski takes a lot of penalties, I don't know if matching him with Pietila is a good idea.I would expect us to ad speed to our line up.

They admit to being an offense first team, but the defense has done a lot better the second half, and their goals against has come down, as have shots allowed. They average 30 shots per game taken.

I can certainly see him turning them down, as long as he has the support of the fans, admin etc. AND He has repeatedly said he is staying.

Re: Michigan Tech post season thread, hunting for hardware!

For those of you participating in the jersey order there is a hang up, the smallest jersey size that they can order is 52 so if you wanted a 46 or 50, you should have an email or facebook message asking you to tell me if you still want your jersey. I am working on alteration costs so that is an option but it will cost more.

Please follow up with me.

Thanks

For those of you that are interested. The Michigan Tech vs St Cloud State game will be shown on tape delay on ESPNU at 10:00 AM Eastern on Saturday March 28, 2014. So set your DVRs.

Has WBUP/WBKP secured the local broadcast rights or has ESPN done away with that option?

There is mention on the NCAA.com/media page that says:
If an NCAA network partner chooses not to activate or televise a particular round of an NCAA championship, those TV rights revert back to the NCAA. The NCAA can grant/sell them to any network if it chooses.

This could be a grey area that MTU & WBUP/WBKP would have to contact ESPN and or the NCAA for the rights to air it. Technically, ESPN3 is a streaming feed, not a televised feed.

technically showing the game on tape delay probably constitutes airing the game on TV. I believe that ESPN has refused to sell local rights and that started last year. I used to watch all the non-espn games on MASN or some other regional sports network via the sports pack on Dish and have friends over...last year we had to do ESPN3 for the Minnesota State game...pretty sure last year was the first time they did this...

Also very much looking forward to this game. Your take on SCSU is pretty spot on. Our PP isn't the same without Kossila and it showed against Miami. Getting Prochno back on D is going to be big. Brodzinski has a lot of speed and can score from anywhere and in turn forces a lot of penalties. If he forgoes his senior season next year, going to be a big hole for the Huskies.

They have made a bigger focus on D and that is when things started to turn around. Think they blocked over 15 shots against UND and that is precisely why they won and made the NCAA's. It's also helped out Lindgren (goalie) who isn't stellar but is decent and has surely been a beneficiary of the increased defensive focus.

I continue to follow the WCHA but can't say I'm as locked in as I used to be. I've seen Mankato a few times and they look really good. I didn't get to see your game Saturday as I was too busy watching my guys come up short but saw from the recaps that it was quite a battle early. Also have seen you've had a lot of close ones with them, so if you can play them tough, you can play anyone tough.

Any highpoints you guys can callout for your squad other than the clearly talented Kero, Petan and Pietella as well as your super solid goalie in Phillips?
