Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Hopefully over the long summer the players will learn by extensive practice to SHOOT THE PUCK INTO THE INSIDE OF THE NET.

no it was a pretty good year and I didn't expect to watch hockey beyond this weekend. I just still see yesterday's game as a missed opportunity.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I wonder if average attendence will increase once we start playing NMU, LSSU and Ferris in conference, particularly among the student population. If we even got half the students, faculty and staff to come to games, it would more than fill the arena. There are a lot more students, faculty and staff than there were in 1975 when Tech won the national championship. If the team continues on an upward trajectory, there's no reason they couldn't fill 1500 more seats. They could knock out the back wall, complete the bowl and add a jumbotron. This always seemed like a pipe dream, but with the combination of a new coach, a new attitude, an amazing crop of players and a new WCHA, it seems more and more possible.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Any rumor or word of Tech players jumping to catch the end of the regular seasons in the AHL or ECHL (or other leagues)?

I usually watch the transaction pages here:
http://theahl.com/stats/transactions.php
and here:
http://www.echl.com/stats/transactions.php

But I'm thinking there may be some folks on the board who have the inside skinny.

I'd like to think that some of our seniors will continue their on-ice careers.

Olson probably gets a tryout. Maybe MacLeod in a checking role. Maybe Baker, but with him being on his third right (left?) shoulder, maybe not.

If Robo wants to do a few pro years, I'm guessing he takes the Rob Nolan route and starts with a CHL deal. Hasn't worked out too badly for Red Light Robbie. ;)

you know... it's just not something that as easy to do as it seems. but yeah all year we missed chances, and the pp needs to be consistent.

I heard a rumor a few months ago that they were working on the plans for the east wall. I know there are a lot of idea out there as to what to do but I for one hope they add 500-1000 seats, plus a few suites.I like where the band is now, I wouldn't change that.
As far as the students, I was in lakeland last week for tigers games, and sitting in front of me were a bunch of toots.( who were very interested in the chicks from northwood in front of them!), None of whom had attended a single hockey game all year.Overall I think winning is the biggest thing that can be done to get students interested. I also think that we are going to have to rebuild the student fan base a little at a time, but certainly with a few key wins tickets will be hard to get.I used to buy my half season ticket, which is all a student could buy, and then buy standing room for the other night.

I think the league we are in might help some because we have so many students from Michigan, with the present league, no one has ever heard of denver or colorado college unless you are a fan already. Certainly none of the students have heard of them, so playing Ferris and BGSU might help.

I think a couple will sign with the ECHL right away. Maybe one or two will go into coaching. I hope so.I'm thinking that the leadership will be hard to replace, but the scoring I think we will do ok with. I hope liktieg up's his game as I like his talent. I agree about some of the others. I wonder if there will be cuts.
Looking at next year, DU will have a ton of very talented players as will und.

I really think they need to work on that in some way. Not sure how or what is needed. Though a majority of students come from southern MI (aka claimed Hockeytown) most seem clueless about hockey.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Concepts have existed since at least the 07-08 season showing a concourse on the east end with a hall of fame and a perch for the band as well as a relocated zamboni room. Look for Tech to make some sort of announcement concerning further improvements potentially in the next year.

not sure if you heard it, but my complaint was based specifically on yesterday's game with all the talk of shots going wide and high throughout the first half the game, then after the first period Brent pointed out that officially the "quality scoring chances" were, I think 8-1 in Tech's favor. But the score was still tied at that point, which let DU get back into it. To me that was more frustrating than the PP, especially when you hear "he's got a wide open net.... and the shot goes wide." But I didn't see it in person, and yes, it's a lot more difficult to do in real time with a bouncing high speed pass than it is for me to complain about. so... I'll move on.

Remember quality scoring chances are subjective as well. Missing the net by a small amount is not any different then taking a shot that hits the goalie in the breadbasket. In fact it could have been a better shot and quality chance when missing the net then hitting the goalie. The stats the teams keep are a bit more complex then what you see on a scoreboard during a game.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

plans are in place for pushing out the east wall and for a new scoreboard. $$$$ c'mon rich alumni!

I personally would like to see more seating along the East end, but first we must fill the seats we have already. A concourse behind the seating would be nice too; somewhat to match the West end, provided there is ample room outside of the building so as to not interfere with MacInnes Dr. Would cost big $$$ though.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Would love to see some more modernization of the arena. Repaint everything, ceiling, walls, etc, that would go a long way, then replace the lighting, LEDs from Cree preferably, get a video scoreboard, again using Cree LEDs, lol. I also really want to see the HoF concept that tehy showed when announcing the suites, looked awesome but never seemed to materialize. Overall I still love the Mac, a few additional touches and it would be the best arena in the country, not the biggest, but definitely the best.

As for players signing, I would think Olson is almost a guarantee to get a try out and contract with an AHL/ECHL team, I think Baker has a shot but he is small and not as skilled with the puck as Connor. Robo possibly gets into the ECHL, maybe lower, but he will probably still play.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Also have to add, apparently Jamie Russell was on TV today, my dad was watching BC play Providence and I got a call at work asking if Jamie was an assistant for Providence now. My dad saw him on the bench, of course the call was during a meeting at work and I forgot to silence my phone and my ringtone is the Mario theme :o

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Was anyone at the Tech postgame alumni party? I hear that the seniors and Mel all made an appearance. That really shows how much the hockey huskies appreciate their fans and supporters.

They fairly recently updated with paint and flooring and seating, not sure when you may have seen it last. A higher quality cameras and video feed would be a good investment.

yes, yes, good party.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I've seen it, graduated in spring 2010 and saw the suites too, the ceilings and walls could still use work IMO. I agree with teh cameras and feed fully.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I would also like to see a top-notch Huskies Live feed before a jumbotron and arena expansion. I'd be willing to pay more to help support a high-res, HD feed. As it is, it's still not worth watching, and I'm sorry I bought it this year (after a year off).

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Congratulations to Mel Pearson and his staff for a very successful first season!!!! They were much more competitve than is recent years and his leadership clearly was the reason. Schools like Clarkson, RPI, and Michigan tech carry the same cross of trying to attract technically talented students who also are D1 prospects........not easy!
