Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I think I've finally narrowed down the list of who could be the next commitment for Mel Pearson:

Tim Lappin-Tri-City (USHL)
Ryan Papa-Waterloo (USHL)
Matthew Joyaux-Chicago Mission U16 (Tier 1)
Alex Kubiak-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
James Bonaguro-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
Brett Curran-Chicago (USHL)
Rob Gawron-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
Alex Roos-Cedar Rapids (USHL)
Matt Calabrese-Team Illinois (Tier 1)
Alex Sakellaropoulos-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)

So who are the top three; so apparently the coaches have been spending some time in the windy city.

Already reported here, but it's on michigantechhuskies.com now.

Sweeney and Cecere Join Hockey Huskies for 2011-12Sweeney and Cecere Join Hockey Huskies for 2011-12
HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson as added two more players to the team's 2011-12 roster. Riley Sweeney (Delta, British Columbia/Surrey (BCHL)) and Nick Cecere (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln (USHL)) will attend Michigan Tech and play hockey starting this fall.
Sweeney, a 6-1 defenseman, played the last two seasons with the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League. He tallied 10 goals and 28 assists for 38 points in 60 games a year ago, ranking among the top 10 defensemen in the BCHL in scoring. The previous season, he posted 23 total points in 53 games played. Sweeney plans on majoring in business administration.

"Sweeney's a very talented, smooth-skating defenseman," said Pearson. "He's going to add some offensive punch to our blue line. We expect him to have a very successful career at Tech."

Cecere is a 6-0 defenseman who played with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League in 2010-11. He recorded seven assists in 58 games played. The previous year, he put up two goals and nine assists for 11 total points in 60 games with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL. Cecere also plans on studying business administration.

"Cecere's had a solid career in the USHL," said Pearson. "We expect him to continue that at Michigan Tech and bring some grit to our defense."

The two additions give Michigan Tech 33 players on its hockey roster for 2011-12. The Huskies' season opens Oct. 1 with an exhibition game vs. Lakehead.

A forward! Mel is mixing it up. I hope October is as exciting as August.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I was starting to wonder if you had gotten the news. :)

I was working in Hawaii the last couple weeks and kind of on purpose staying out of the loop... but now I'm hearing people talk about season tickets etc.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I've got my season tickets and I'm getting pumped! lots of buzz in the community. just had someone ask me tonight if we would ask them along to a hockey game.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

With the additions, the lineup is going to be a mystery:

Here is how it looks so far:

3rd line Gubb D. Johnstone Kero
4th line A. Pietila McCadden Rix

Top Replacements who will see ice time

Defense

Top Pair Brown Seigo
2nd Pair Stebner Nielsen
3rd Pair Sweeney Sova

Top Replacements who will see ice time
Davis, Cecere, Heinonen,

Goalies
#1 Genoe
#2 Robinson

Long year for
Doriott, L'Esperance, Hietala, Reddick, and Cramer

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I generally like your assessment and possible line possibilities with one glaring exception... Doriott. I believe with his time at forward last year it will really help him become a better defenseman overall, with a better concept of time and space and an increase in actual skating ability. With that said, I understand that Russell mainly used him as a third defenseman that was technically a forward, but he did that to a lot of the forwards(some would argue all of them). I am looking for a much improved defensive game from Doriott and believe he will log a lot of ice time this upcoming season.

Thoughts or arguments??

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Obviously, Doriott will have to earn it, just like everyone else. Also, I don't believe either of the Johnstones are centers.

At this point, the only defenseman whose position in the lineup is predictable, is Seigo. He will likely anchor the top pair (though with Pearson, that is not set in stone).

With the goalies, it's still 1a/1b, IMO. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I think Robinson is a little more of a positional goalie, and Genoe is slightly more aggressive and acrobatic. They've both struggled at times the last couple of years, but they've also had instances where one of them played well and the rest of the team let him down. Not too many goalies would've fared better when facing over 40 shots most nights.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I don't believe either of the Johnstones are centers.

Jacob Johnstone centered Furne and Gordic after Olson and Kattelus were no longer available.
His brother would like to play on the same line, but for now with this team, both need to be centers to balance the top 3 lines.
I can't wait to see what Mel and the staff figure out about the lineup. I hope it can stay consistent and let the players stay with their linemates and d-pairs all year long.

Agreed, Robinson and Genoe are both capable of #1. I would think Mel is used to one guy taking most of the load from his days at UM.
