Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

yes and it was fun!! weather was perfect, food was good, turn out great. the players sure can eat!! seeing Peter Rohn with a fork in one hand and a burger in the other was worth the price of admission. coaches look happy and relaxed. (funny, huh? cause they are about to get the ax! )

and where was Boosh? no doubt studying? ...

I don't agree at all with the JSR naysayers on this board who say Russell will / should be fired. The best coach in D1 hockey could not have done much better if any with the unprecedented injuries, player shortages, and jumbled lines that hounded the Huskies all of last season.

Russell showed a couple years back that he can take a roster with less-than-the-best talent and make them work a system to pull off a winning season. He has also been increasing the talent coming in every season....despite the losses of Hauswirth and Pierro-Zabotel, which I don't think you can blame hime for.

If the Huskies can stay healthy this year, I think they will surprise a lot of people with their level of competition. The progam won't be a national title contender overnight, but I believe JSR the ability to build the program. If he can't...then I don't know who could.

You could bring in an overpaid "big name" like Mike Eaves, Red Berenson, or Don Lucia. But then you'd be paying a horrendous amount of money for a coach who has never had to develop players, do real recruiting, or rebuild a team. Because of their huge, commerciallized, big budget, big ten schools, they get NHL level players handed to them on a silver platter year after year.

I am really excited about this season! Think we will be better than expected. And Robo will be the new Teslak. (I hope)

I'm excited about this season because I'm sick of baseball and football is already starting to bore me. At this point I don't really care if the team is very good, I'm just ready to watch some hockey. Except I won't be able to watch Tech hockey until, probably, the series @Duluth. I guess the Gophers and NHL will have to do until then.

On the plus side for you, the Wild might not be so boring this year.

I think we will be pretty young and win 10-12 games, most of them in the second half. Anything more than that would be gravy in my book. That should help setup a brighter future for 2010-2011.

You know if Hauswirth had stayed, I'd have said we would be right in there. As it is, I wonder how we will do. The defense is questionable with so many new guys, the best ones from last year are gone, and I question if we have the scoring punch necessary to be competitive. Although it will be better than last year for sure. Overall a lot of question marks. I do think our new guys will fit in relatively fast and will contribute right away.
last year I think 25 or 26 points would have put us in the middle of the field. that's 13 wins. I think 10 wins at least and if the pp is better than you could see another one I suppose.

I don't know about being "right in there", but I agree that the loss of Hauswirth caused my 08-09 expectations to dip a notch. Assuming he stayed off the injury list, he would've been a significant scoring threat even as a freshman. That's why I am glad we managed to get Gwilliam back, because I think his leadership this year will go a long way towards putting last season behind us and getting this team back into the mix over the next few seasons.

Looking out into the first month of games, I don't know exactly what to think. Five of the seven October games are at home, and if you want to go another week out, there is a home series with NoDak the first weekend of November. So seven of the first nine are at home, which is a plus with regards to getting the freshmen acclimated and as ready as possible to spend nearly two months on the road (save for a home series with UMn in mid-December). The good news is, we get a decent shot at a second half run with a long slate of home games starting Tuesday 1/12 against Northern.

We're definitely going to have to buckle down, make a statement, and put up some wins in the first nine games though, because I don't see us winning a lot of games during that long stretch on the road. Looking at that first stretch of games, not counting the exhibition against Ryerson, we should be able to win at least three of them, IMO.

I think the schedule is very favorable at the beginning of the season. Start with NMU and LSSU at home, NMU is a tossup and LSSU is pretty bad. Then our next 2 series are against teams that more likely than not will be starting freshman goalies. In my opinion, playing these teams early is a huge advantage, as we get a shot at the goalies before they get completely acclimated to the WCHA game. (as long as one of the freshman goalies isn't the next Bachman, that is) Then UND at home will be tough, but UND at the beginning of the year is always easier than late, when they decide to make their annual run. At UMD...another unproven goalie. Overall, if Tech plays well, they have a good chance to put up a respectable record over the first 2 months, respectable meaning within a couple games of .500.

I was thinking the same thing about the CC series. It's on the road at high altitude and on the big ice, but CC could struggle this year if some of their freshman don't step up, and Tech has proven that they can win at the World Arena if they want to. I agree it's good that we get a crack at them early, hopefully before they find any sort of stride.

NMU, yeah it's always a tossup, but don't think they aren't going to have a chip on their shoulder after what happened last December. I could easily see another blowout if the team isn't ready to play tough.

We'll find a way to screw it up :p I don't care what you want to say about me, after 4 years, I'm sticking to my guns until they prove me wrong :D

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Let's go huskeeeeeeeez

A MacD sighting! :)

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but if we can keep most of the core players healthy, I think we could actually have two legit scoring lines this year. Now, I'm not saying anyone on this team will have more than 30 pts., but compared to last year, where Baker and Olson scored 1/3 of our goals, it would be nice to have a consistent second line that could chip in regularly.

That said, this crazy idea definitely hinges on some players stepping it up now that they are upperclassmen. That remains to be seen.

Additionally, I know I mentioned this earlier during the long summer hibernation period, but I'll say it again because I always manage to muster some delusional faith in the team right around this time every year. I think we finally have the combination of vision, muscle, and shooting/passing accuracy necessary to have a respectable PP conversion rate for the first time since the Colin Murphy era. Again, the guys have to make it happen - we probably won't convert at 20%, but even 15% would be a drastic improvement.

I have to agree with manurespreader to some extent. Even though DEFENSE!1!!11! is JR's speciality, I am most concerned about our defensemen, particularly beyond the Top 2.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Hey Boosh, is it time to start brainstorming line combinations yet?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

I've crunched the numbers and worked out all the simulations to configure my Boosh-O-Meter. See below for the results.

This is a test of the Emergency Tech Fail System. This is only a test.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q16KpquGsIc&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q16KpquGsIc&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Had this been a real Tech fail, an irate rant in tLodge featuring copious amounts of obscenities, inventive threats to the team and pledges of loyalty to U of M out of spite would have followed.

KTBY-33 serves the greater Cheyenne, Wyoming area.

This concludes this test of the Emergency Tech Fail System.
