Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I don't know how this one escaped my eyes all these years, but while searching for photos I came across this one which the photographer says is displayed at Dee Stadium. That gold color really would pop on the ice - I love it. Although I'm sure the non-engineering programs might take issue with it.

Next MTU Throwback? - It gets my vote. (Although I might try to make the "Tech" a little more visible.)

Now that the d corp is set any ideas what the d- pairs will be.

Typically an offensive pair, shutdown, and depth pair are the norm.

Is Hanna ready to play with Sweeney right out of the gate?

I think it could look one of two ways based on Hanna.

Shutdown
Stebner Sova

Offensive
Hanna Sweeney

Depth
Watson. Hyland

Lei bringer, Fillion, and Davis filling in

Or

Offense
Hyland Sweeney

Shutdown
Stebner Sova

Depth
Hanna Fillion

Watson, Leibinger, and Davis filling in

Should be exciting to see who wins the jobs.

IMO, this is going to be a very competitive league, top to bottom. The teams that pay big bucks for coaches (Tech, MSUM) will have their hands full with recently successful programs like Ferris, plus teams like Bowling Green that are also trying to rise from the ashes. That doesn't even include the pesky Alaska schools, and rivals (NMU/LSSU for us, Bemidji for Mankato). And it's certain that UAH will win some games at the expense of a contender. It's really not unlike what it was before 2/3 of the membership bolted for new conferences, and very similar to what happened when "Hocky RAST" was formed from the old ECAC in the 80s.

That doesn't sound right. If he were drafted out out the WHL he'd have no choice. He has flexibility now.
The article made it pretty clear that he either has to make the Oilers lineup (a long shot) or he goes to play for Everett in the WHL.
I'm sure he and the Oilers organization were well aware of the options and the Oilers encouraged him to sign.
On one hand, you can't blame a guy for wanting to start making money ASAP, since most players in JJ's position have a short marketable shelf-life.
On the other hand, it suggests that Edmonton views the WHL as a preferable training ground to the new WCHA.
Does anyone know if JJ starts drawing any sort of contract compensation from Edmonton if he plays in Everett or does he just get the usual WHL stipends?

Don't put this on the new WCHA vs old...Edmonton's management turned over, with Tambellini out, whom Pearson new personally, that could mean a shift in their views on college vs MJ. The silly part for Edmonton is starting JJ's clock earlier than necessary.

But lets face it, Edmonton has not been the bastion for smart decisions over the last 20 years.

You're probably right.....they might have done the same thing if JJ was with an NCHC team. I recall that JJ was supposed to be on a slow track because of all the young talent in the pipe at Edmonton. Although the change in management certainly could have been a factor, I think the Oilers are frustrated and impatient with the lack of results from their young guns and are moving players through the pipeline more quickly.

If the issue was new vs old WCHA then they would not have been interested in JJ at all.

It's more about management and thinking MJ is better than college in general.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Well regardless of where he played last year, he could have played for east Bum*** egypt, it shouldn't matter. But regardless, he is not good enough for NHL hockey at this point. So you have to ask yourself, " Didn't Edmonton know this?" and if not, why the heck not? and if they did then...
Seems really stupid to pay him NHL level pay and take a salary cap hit, when he is not going to make the team. Unless in going down, the salary goes down too, in which case maybe he was the dumb one. I guess it depends on the contract.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I read that Khaira approached Edmonton to sign as he wanted to play more games than college allowed. So Edmonton management did not make the initial move.

He would definitely get his signing bonus. Not sure about salary during the season if he plays in the WHL vs the AHL.

Hanna and Watson will definitely be in the top 6. I could see Mel playing them together.

We have a rightful claim to a rivalry with Bemidji. Ask them what they think of us.

To me, this article makes sense. Mel probably goes to recruit him. He's on the fence. Mel basically gets him to try out the college thing for a year and see if he likes it, but at the same time, he recruits an extra forward or two knowing there's at least a 50/50 chance JJ leaves. In the end, no hard feelings because everything is clear up front.

Could be, could be.

I see Hyland playing at the upper end of the pairings as an offensive defenseman and I think Stebner will fight for a slot as a depth guy.

Mel didn't recruit him. Mikesch and Russell did. Same with B. Pietila and D. Johnstone. Mel deserves credit for developing these guys, but they were recruited by the previous regime.
