Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Aww FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUDGE.

Net gain of zero future NHL players this week I guess.
Mel did too good of a job on JJ.

I can't believe he's ready but thats the nature of things now, especially with Edmonton in such a rebuild. I wish him luck but I certainly think another year or two of college would have been better for him than where ever he ends up this season.

Days like this certainly explain the amount of committed recruits because I'm sure other current players won't make it through 4 years at MTU before going pro...

The only issue I have with the leaving is why wait so long to do it? Do it at the end of the season.

Im sure Pearson and crew had a good handle on things to know where JJ stood with Edmonton, etc. Sucks to happen in August but it isn't surprising. Huskies still have 18 forwards without JJ.

He could have waited until half way through the season.

Dang, was thinking we'd get another year out of him and he'd leave next summer, but with the way Edmonton needs centers, guess it was too much to hope for. Best of luck to him, but he definitely still has weight to add.

And yes, this is why Mel has "over-recruited". I was also figuring on this being the last season for Blake Pietila and possibly David Johnstone, maybe even 1-2 others.

oh no. hate to see him go, but its a great opportunity for him. ****.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Not a big deal as we are still loaded up front.
Likely J. Khaira in Oklahoma City next year.

Pietila Kero Petan
D. Johnstone Baltus Heinonen
Furne J.Johnstone Gould
Eick Rix Sturos
Vallis Holmberg Hietila
Neville Anderson

I wouldn't say it isn't a big deal. JJ had the potential to be potentially one of the best players on the team. He had the most offensive upside, and he had a great combination of size and skill, though he does still need to bulk up.

well agreed, but... I'd say there is no way he is ready to play NHL hockey. I thought he stagnated after about mid way last season and he has a ways to go to be able to use his size to his advantage. I'd be surprised if he makes the AHL right away. Mid season, yes.. Sorry to see him go and I think there ought to be a cutoff of some sort.

Not that I think Tech's logo is any good, but I have to call BS that it appears a pre-selected field of 16 was chosen to avoid the first round. There's no way in hell that Northern's and Grand Valley's logos are any less cartoony and dumb than ours.
True, it's just something the FreeP is doing to kill time til labor day when the sports beat picks up. However, I do think that Tech has a pretty good draw, and with Tech fans history of stuffing polls, I would think that the husky has pretty good odds of getting pass the Chips.

What was he offered?
I would guess at this time next year, I'll have JJ's ECHL jersey. I don't see any chance there will be a JJ NHL jersey to collect. The timing would be directly related to the fact that he just spent a week with Oilers staff and I'm sure they filled his head full of grand visions. Just ask Teslak how turning pro early can work out for you. Do you think he would have rather played another year of college hockey? As for what he was offered - $$$$$. You can either play college hockey and have to go to class or turn pro and we'll pay you to play hockey. All the best to JJ, but he'll be spending at least 2013-14 in the minors.

As I understand it, Teslak's issues were much less about turning pro early, as they were about which team he signed with...

There's also an upside for Tech on this. You don't want a bunch of one and done guys when you are building a program, but at the same time, if top future recruits see that playing at Tech can lead to a quick entry to the next level with the support of the coaching staff, that has to make it a more attractive option for top players coming up.
