Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I don't know what to think. We have a number of guys who could make big progress and that would translate into a much better overall team. Eick got going right at the end last year, I'd like to see Davis continue to get better, he is still young, and Gould should be better. Of course so will everyone else and there will be more competition from the freshmen. So who knows.

I think the key is to have good puck moving defensemen, who get the puck out of the zone promptly. I think Yale showed that in the finals.

So hard to say what everyone comes back like, as the players can still make HUGE strides in strength, speed and skill. Key for tMEL is competition for time and development. You can't get offense without D that are able to get the puck out.

It's widely known that Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, a.k.a. Johnny Football, completed his spring semester coursework online and did not attend any classes on campus. Does MTU offer any type of online courses to recruits so they can get a jumpstart on their academic program of choice before they get to Houghton? Or so those who've moved to the pros can continue and get closer to a degree?

More of them all the time. I have a class now that's online only, about half my recent classes have been. One of the kids in the class I'm taking now is in India.

I'm surprised Travis Brown is that high, I wouldn't have expected him to get that much exposure with where he came from. I suppose it is Chris Dilks, and he would have more of a chance of seeing Brown than many other people that would be putting together these kinds of lists.
Looks like others like Brown alot too...he's taking part in the USA Hockey Select 17 National Development Camp held June 27-July 3 in Williamsville, NY, one of 19 Minnesotans...of note, quite a few of those guys are uncommitted and I know a few of them are on the Huskies' radar.

there is a program for those who go pro to finish their degrees.

dont know about an early start program. sounds like a good idea.

An early start program might be helpful with recruiting. Most of the college recruits these days are older than the average student so being able to knock out a few prerequisites online might swing a few players our way. Just an idea.

Something tells me that the NCAA would not approve of that. There are probably rules about when your eligibility clock starts that would prevent enrollment and class scheduling prior to a certain date.

It's not uncommon for football recruits to start classes in the spring to get spring football drills in.

That's called greyshirting in football.

Your four-seasons-in-five-years clock generally starts the moment you start classes (and not just enroll). [I say generally because it's the NCAA, and I'm sure that there's some exception to that.] Now, what Manziell did was a calculated move, because he knew that he'd play at least three seasons, if not all four, as soon as his season eligibility began. I'm not sure how the wraparound works, though. Did starting in spring (or hockey players starting spring online or summer in-person) wipe just a two semesters off of the clock, or did it just say that 2011-12 was his first NCAA year, and he can play pigskin 2012-15? I'd have to read the NCAA manual more to understand it.

The one thing that I'm fairly sure of is that it would really make redshirting untenable unless for medical reasons.

If I were a homer I'd agree, but I've been stung by this team too many times. Plus it's July, so who really knows what will happen once seasonal wear & tear begins on the players? Here goes:

1. (Man)kato Kaelin
2. Tech
3. _airbanks
4. Bueller...Bueller
5. Northwest Ohio State
6. Truth Squad
7. Father Marquette Teachers College
8. Buttmidji
9. uaafanblarg
10. Ketchupville

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Although some may see it at sandbagging, I would still be happy for a top half finish and advancing to Grand Rapids. Some might view that as a step back given the new WCHA, but it has been 20+ years since Tech hosted some playoff games so I would just like to do that for starters. If we happen to host those playoff games as Cup winners, all the better, I won't complain.

Speaking of games, does anyone have the scoop yet on when (times) the games will be played for GLI? I'm guessing there will be a late afternoon time slot for the first game and then the second game around 7 or 8 PM but would like to know for sure. Would like to book my airfare and I'm trying to figure out what day/times will work.

I have Mankato as the clear favorite, Huntsville and Anchorage missing the playoffs and pretty much anyone else could finish anywhere else. I think Tech, Ferris and Fairbanks should be strong contenders for home ice in the first round, NMU and Bowling Green as true wild cards. They could finish 3rd. They could finish 7th. While LSSU and Bemidji likely make the playoffs, but travel in round one. Just like last season in both conferences, a lot could be decided in the final weekend. All of those teams have some positives, but all have some major question marks as well.

Here's to a final weekend in Kato to play for the McNaughton!
Actually, I'd probably put Ferris #2 and Tech #3, but other than that, I can't argue with you. I do think BGSU has the potential to grab top 3 spot, but they could also finish 7th.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

If we're at the point of tossing out predictions:

1. Mankato
2. Bowling Green
3. Michigan Tech
---------------------
4. Ferris St.
5. Alaska
6. Northern Michigan
7. Lake Superior St.
8. Bemidji St.
----------------------
9. Alaska-Anchorage
10. Alabama-Huntsville

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I thought Tech was deeper last year than in the previous year, but inconsistent goaltending and low output from our juniors cost us a few contests. We should have been 4rth or 5th place.
At least on paper, Tech should be considerably better (in the top third) for 2013/14, due both to increased talent and a somewhat weaker schedule.
Tech's offense will be top notch this year (Petan, Pietila, Johnstone, Khaira, Kero, Furne, etc.)
Defense and Goal remain the unknowns. Tech really needs Hanna & Hyland to be big forces on the blue line and no cave-ins from Copley or Phillips.
If one or both goalies stay hot, I think we'll take the McNaughton Cup. I don't think Kato has as much forward firepower as Tech.
